    I've been making my own zero clearance inserts for my KF 700 S for a few years now (CNC) - but just leaving a thin strip of material on the slider side. Works fine but always seemed sketchy. Cutting the relief so that the insert can have more material on the slider side is a great idea! Things a bit tighter in there on the 700 but I think its a win :) Will try to do. Thanks!

    • @ramonartful
      @ramonartful  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes…my original insert was like that as well…only had about 5mm to the left of the blade. Broke within the first week when a small offcut got jammed! The extra bevel makes a huge difference! Thanks for checking out the vid 🙏🏼

  • @stevewurster
    @stevewurster 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I bought two of these for my K3 back in mid-2020. I've only needed to install one of course; the other is a backup just in case (or maybe I'll turn it into a 45 degree ZCI at some point). I had to make a minor adjustment on the bottom of the front edge of the ZCI so that it would go in and out more easily.
    These things are great though. Very well made, and I found it easier to buy one rather than attempt to make my own (well, I had made one in the past out of some scrap pieces but it was nowhere near as nice as Ramon's).

    • @ramonartful
      @ramonartful  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Bummer to hear that you had to modify yours. Hopefully, it was quite easy.
      I appreciate the good words and feedback!

    • @stevewurster
      @stevewurster 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ramonartful The modification was minimal, thankfully. I removed part of the front corner that goes under the slider table, as well as a little bit more next to that (to make it level with where the ZCI rests on the saw), and made two minor chamfers on the bottom as well. These changes make it so that I can remove and replace the ZCI with the table pushed all the way to the right. I previously had to move the table all the way to the left to do this, which of course is the opposite of what is required for a blade change. I just chalked it up to minor differences between machines. Picture of stock and modified ZCI here: www.dropbox.com/s/u2twuzsupka0y95/insert.jpg

    I love your process, Ramon. Your insert fits perfectly in my K3 and is mandatory for safe operation. I'm guessing you would have used your Shaper Origin to make the template if you were doing it again. Keep up the great work.

    • @ramonartful
      @ramonartful  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes! The Shaper Origin would have been the ideal tool to create this! This jig took me a while to make…but I knew what I wanted, and it works perfectly! Initially, I had drawings and three different people cut them CNC. I wasn’t happy with any of them…rough cuts, burning, chipping. I know that the right person could make these as clean as I create them. But the problem is getting the material to them, since the Baltic Birch is covered on both sides with Formica. The shipping cost just wouldn’t make it feasible.
      I actually enjoy the process of making them…and they’re a great seller. Thanks

    • @ramonartful
      @ramonartful  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@farshadbagheri I'm just now seeing your comment/question. Perhaps a "slot or wing cutter" on a router. A Festool Domino with a 4 or 5 mm cutter. Maybe a Dremmel. Or, It would be a little tricky to do since the Formica is quite hard. And it wouldn't be pretty, but one could use a drill and then small chisels. That's a good question...let us know how you did it!

    Hi. Thanks a lot for your videos. Do you make and sell an insert for felder 700K? Only a couple of days using it, my first big saw, and already I had a couple of frights with the clearance. I thought these inserts where more focused in aspiration improvements but I can see their need now. Incredible how they sell those top quality machines with those risky inserts.

      Hello. I feel your pain and am surprised that most, if not all sliders have weak plates with way too much space around the blades . Unfortunately, my ZCI’s fit most Hammer and Felder 500’s. Not the 700 series.

    Hey Ramon. We use mostly portable equipment but I’ve replaced most of my plates to shop made zero clearance inserts. I love the use of the epoxy and Formica. I don’t have access to vacuum bags. Do you think evenly placed weights would good enough? Or should I just stick with Formica cement?

    • @ramonartful
      @ramonartful  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think that contact cement would be okay...I decided to go with epoxy because of its strength and rigidity. Since most ZCI's are relatively small, you could use clamps and cauls to provide ample pressure to lay up Formica, plywood with epoxy. Weights are okay...but hard to get consistent and even clamping pressure. thanks

    • @Stumper52
      @Stumper52 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you are making a smaller batch you can use a flat table, a thicker plastic foil and some silicone. Put your part on the table, run a bead of silicone around it at a good offset, set the foil on it, slide a vacuum hose covered with more silicone between the table and the foil and turn the vacuum pump on. As it pulls vacuum press on any parts of the silicone bead that's not compressed. Of course this won't hold vacuum so the pump has to run the whole cure time.
