For people who are wondering, yes you do have to use the motherboard from the original disc drive that came with your ps3 because it is paired to the ps3 motherboard
Another BR drive can be paired to a PS3.
Not if you jailbreak and re-marry the new blu-ray daughter board with the console

So if I'm understanding this correctly, just replace the drive but use the old motherboard in the new one? If so this method is a lot easier than trying to replace the laser itself.
Yep or you can buy a new laser assembly!
I bought a non backwards comp 40gb back in 08 new out the box had the same problem 2 years later so I traded in for an 80 non backwards and today it still works only problem is the fan keeps getting louder but it works fine.
You might need to get it delidded & repasted.
I just got a backwards comp ps3 yesterday. Everything works fine except doesn’t read disc. Blue light comes on but nothing. Anything I should know before I do this? I’ll be using my ylod Japanese ps3 Blu-ray drive.
Is taking it apart the only way to fix the disk drive can't I just try air spraying the disc drive or something that doesn't involve taking the whole thing apart

Thanks for this! I read somewhere that, in doing this, I need to make sure the new disk drive is compatible with my PS3's model number. How do I do that? I mean, I know how to find my model number, but how do I make sure my new drive is compatible to that model?

Photos of you who have a PlayStation 3 fat edition that is able to compatibility of the PS2 edition you have to spray the cooling spray on the side as well as the disc opener that's how I did it and that's how it worked I had to format Rest rather then and restore the software so far it's working just fine for now but I don't know I have any problems if you had any problems let me know
The blueray drive link that you share, is this only for the ps3 80 gb? Will this work on the ps3 60 gb the backward console?
My fat PS3 disc won't Spin. I put disc in than I heard weird noise. Shows game is loading in top right but nothing on screen.

Several things that can cause disc read errors is one the PS3 was moves with the disc inside and other things like corrupt hardware and just to name a few.
My ps3 fat reads ps1 games, ps2, blue ray movies, but every time i insert a ps3 game, it Will show that is loading up the game in the corner of the screen, the actual game wont appear on the menú. Iam guessing that one of the causes if because HDD is probably full. I already clean everything inside. Any recomendation
@@joelparedes5063 Well the HDD could also be corrupt as well and if the screen won't load then it may be the Lens itself could be out of alignment.

I tried to replace my default disc reader with another I have laying around but don't work!? So you are saying that I must replace the board of the disc reader?
Yes, you have to put that board from your old drive into the new drive for it to be paired to your console!
I left it in a carvan for about 6 months in the uk and I guess it got wet because it wouldn't read disks then a few days later my sister kicked it and it fell down the stairs (on accident) and it seems fine it all works looked on the inside of it but games won't show?

This is a stupid question.....but why do you have to replace the motherboard? I can't just replace the whole disc drive?
The motherboard from the original disc drive is tied to the ps3 system so if you put any disc drive it will not work unless you transfer over the original board. That’s why he talked about jailbreaking because if you do that you can “remarry” the ps3 to any disc drive

No the board is "tied" to that ps. You have to swap the board to the new optical drive.
@@Airsoftforall there is actually a way to just swap out the blue ray drive. I've done it. But it's a more extensive process.

i got a ps3 slim I can play games digital but I put a disc in it dosent pop up it dosent read anything at all I can take the disc in and take it out but the PS3 OS dosent even detect or read the disc
Check if your game discs have a scratches or try some game discs if it's not check the Laser that read the dics
Might be a laser issue with the drive!

Yes that would be correct. You can use a CECH-G model drive, you'll just have to swap out the ribbon cable for the fatter one!

Might be a Blu-ray issue. If I'm correct, when the drive stops working or is giving error such as not reading disc, when you try to open apps like the store, it won't open because its "sensing" a failure. Did you try resetting the system to see if that would fix the issue?

Yeah im starting to think it might be easier just buying a PS2 with some kinda hdmi converter. My ps3 a01 plays ps1 and ps3 games just fine but has a hard time reading ps2 games. I've ordered a replacement drive and we will see if it fixes it. If not I might just look into buying a Ps2
Was it the same BD? If not, then the daughterboard might have slightly different signals for the mechanics, meaning that you may need to remarry the daughterboard. I install the metal gear solid 4 but when the game loads to 23% in top left corner of the screen there's a blinking DVD with Question mark. But all of my games can play properly without a problem? Any tips is there something wrong in my PS3 or the Disc?
Sounds like it might be the disc, are there any scratches or such on it?
There could be scratches or the disc is corrupt sometimes discs can have a glitch too because the glitches causes the sometimes is the disc readable question.
It sounds like the bluray laser is weakened which means it will play single layered bluray games but not. Double layered bluray games such as red dead etc certain games are single layered others are double layered tryclening your lasers with cleaning alcohol and a cue tip if this fails you should just replace the laser.

if you have CFW, it most likely will, if not then most likely not(encryption, safety, etc)
if you have a Fat or up to CECH 2500(this specific model is only compatible when made before 2011) slim then you can jailbreak. You can also use HEN on CFW-incompatible models like the super slim (all super slim models are CFW-incompatible)

The problem I have with my ps3 is that it'll read and play ps1 games but won't play ps3 games
If i'm correct, that may be a laser issue. The PS1/DVD use the "DVD" laser while PS3 games use "Blu-ray" laser. You will either have to change the laser or change the entire drive and put the original drive motherboard in the new drive like I did in this video. The laser is the cheaper route and you can find them on eBay. Will just take a little more work to get to it!

Im having a ps3 super slim problem that it will not read games anymore like discs. Whenever i do insert a game, it spins for a while, then makes a sound and just completely stops spinning and reading. Is there anything i can do?
I haven't worked on a super slim before, but might be the same thing. You'd just have to check to see which laser type is needed. Can you reply with the model number (should be on the back)?
