    Stability pulled a Unity over night. They meant what they said. Now they reap the reception. There is open source AI and its sad few want to support them. These companies want to take the AI public database and then say "you cant have it for free, but we can, and well charge you for it."

      Lol, except Unity isnt bleeding hundreds of millions like SAI. SAI has never been profitable and probably never will be. The entitlement and mental gymnastics that the community has been doing to compare the two companies is sad tbh. Not saying their solution is the answer but they have provided several releases free and the community flips out and thinks that all comes from good will.

    This really feels like an end of an era. Personally I'm optimistic, perhaps the open source community has been too reliant on SAI (to the point of them poaching devs that perhaps should have their hands untied, like Comfy).
    At least this drama has signal boosted alternative open source models, will be exiting to see where things develop.

    When your base idea is to have an open source free model that people can train to be better, it is a very bad idea to put a lot of restrictions on training and distribution of models. They know that CivitAI is their biggest platform, but they alienate themselves from them to the degree that they can't publish the models people make.

    So many news in the AI image generation world.
    1) ForgeUI is going to go in experimental mode due to A1111 hitting 2.0 soon and implementing Forge's faster and lighter generation image tech. Time to switch back to A1111.
    2) SD3 has been banned from CivitAI (at least, temporarily) due to their unclear License. I hope StabilityAI gives clarifications soon and hopefully a better license model for SD3.
    3) SD3 flop. Here it's maybe a bit too early to tell, #2 needs to get fixed, and 4b/8b eventually released. i'll reserve judgment because I want to give StabilityAI the chance to make things right.

      Forge's VRAM optimizations are not going to be brought into Auto1111, though. IMO that is far more important than any speed enhancement. Forge lowered the bar for people, allowing those with less hardware to do things they simply cannot do in any other interface.

    • @Elwaves2925
      @Elwaves2925 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@Outrider42 Was just going to say the same. From what I've read, those VRAM optimisations also affect speed. So the new A1111 should be faster but it won't be as quick as Forge is right now, as I understand it.
      I'm still hoping that someone can take over Forge itself and carry on the devs work.

    • @pladselsker8340
      @pladselsker8340 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It's definitely NOT "forge's faster and lighter generation image tech"! They made their own improvements.
      Long story short, Forge basically "nuked" the core of A1111 and replaced it entirely.
      A1111 has had to go through a lot of investigation to keep its core and get the same sort of speed up.
      The changes are completely different.
      You won't get the "same" performance at all.
      For some, it will be better than Forge, and for others, it will be worse.
      In my opinion, this is an overall good compromise, as they are probably going to continue monitoring the performance of inference through issues on Git Hub after the release.

    Open-source applications aren't "free" for us users. We're investing our time, resources, skills and ideas into beta testing and refining the projects they eventually sell, closed-sourced to large corporations. Corporations who then scale and market them to the masses who don't even know most of this sh*t exists yet. Us "pioneer users" are a necessary part of the ecosystem. It takes time to make money. It also takes business savvy individuals working with developers and the community to make a successful enterprise. In this case one or several of the necessary elements was missing. My whole gripe was that you called CivitAI asking their lawyers what the licensing means "a hostile move"... When they just need to know what the license actually means. It is not a critique on your channel, on your infos, just that they - and YOU use SD commercially as well, by talking about the models, when their are ads here or fees on Patreon etc - need to know how the license affects them. I hope you understand the difference here.

    Re: "we're in a bad place right now". I think we're in a bad place because the community is relying too much on SAI. I feel like it's great that SAI got the ball rolling on open source diffusion models, but the community became too reliant on SAI to KEEP the ball rolling. At this point I feel like SAI has crossed that threshold where they are doing more harm than good to the open source community and democratization of AI. With SAI gone, maybe the crutch will finally be removed, and force the community to organize and make better base models. SD4 doesn't need to be created by SAI.
    What I'd really love to see is new fully open source base models created through a community effort. Training the initial base models likely costs millions of dollars, which is why it's easier for the community to just pause and wait for SAI to do the work. If we organized a community effort similar to Folding@home/Seti@home/etc, then we could have base models created BY the community FOR the community, and wouldn't be held back by SAI's own motives and agendas. Organizing something like that is NOT an easy task, and is made even harder with SAI sticking around in a half-dead zombie state. Keeping people's hopes up for the next latest and greatest disappointment isn't doing the community any favors.

    AI has far outpaced the establishment of legal frameworks to regulate data collection and usage. Since attribution of AI-generated content to specific sources is nearly impossible, treating such content as public domain is the most logical approach. This ensures that no entity profits directly from potentially copyrighted material.
    However, if a model is trained exclusively on data from consenting, compensated individuals (and is strictly documented as such), different rules could apply.
    Edit: In my opinion, we must recognize that the models themselves would not exist if not for the data harvested from the internet. Therefore, public domain is the democratic solution.

Already made a custom node framework that checks py packages against all other nodes and decides the best package for less errors. then made a model optimizer class that retrieves the nodes folder path for models and fixes it to use a standarized model library that can be accessed by other types of uis. It's extremely different. The costs of developing AI are way higher. It doesn't really cost you anything to do TH-cam apart from some initial equipment costs and occasional upgrades. It's also much easier to monetize from donations/Patreon, because people form somewhat parasocial relationships with TH-camrs that make them feel much more connected to a TH-camr, and much more likely to donate.
      The reality is that for something like AI development, the number of people who would even consider donating is astronomically low, and it certainly wouldn't be enough money to account for the costs of training the AI much less providing the developers with a living wage. Not to mention that it's an entire dev team that needs to be supported, not just a single person.

    I think people are forgetting that SAI is a business and not a charity. At one point or another they need to make money to get to eat and in the last 2 years it has been clear that people are not willing to pay for SAI.

    • @elowine
      @elowine 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      I think people are perfectly fine paying for AI tools or services but I doubt SAI had a clear business-plan how to actually get revenue. I also very much agree that we need open models to be competitive, but they need to be open. (Midjourney 🤮) I don't want to have to pay for a model that was trained on stolen content. Without SAI the generative AI scene would look very different and I hope they can turn the tide.

    • @hakuhyo174
      @hakuhyo174 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      No. It’s actually the other way around. People are willing to pay for SD if it’s under a clear and reasonable license but SAI is focusing too much on enterprise who’s never going to choose them over Midjourney or Dalle. Just look at Civit, it’s commercially thriving and it has almost a complete overlap of users.

      Stability spent millions on pointless things instead of focusing on making sure their core product would be profitable. They would not be in this mess if they had any clue how to conduct their business. I believe when it is all over we will find more and more reports on the things they did with their money instead of making a better product.
      People actually will pay for something if it works well and the price is fair. Stability could have done any number of things differently along the way, but somehow managed to choose the worst options every single time.
      Within this video, you heard Comfy state that they want to run it like Red Hat, which is a free and open source product to consumers. It is financed by enterprise use. That is one way to do it.
      Another would be to charge for SD base models, and give people freedom from there (and of course charge more for the commercial users). Stability could have ran an asset store similar to Blender and Unreal.
      Speaking of Blender, that's another example of a free and open source product that is doing quite well.
      They could create a paid developer program which gives subscribers tools and assistance to create their custom models. You need A100 to help get your model trained? This sub can give you access to one. Like a normal sub, if you stop paying you lose access to the dev program but you keep the stuff you made so far (unlike their current license.)
      Those are just examples of what they could have done, and all would be better than what they chose to go with.

      Things I am willing to pay for:
      - use of generated images commercially, especially if there is a minimum revenue required for the royalty, under a clearly defined and reasonable license
      - access to a public server for image generation and fine-tuning
      - access to a private server for image generation and fine-tuning, with better hardware and no queue, at varying price points depending on desired hardware and features
      Things I am not willing to pay for:
      - the ability to use the model to generate images at all, even for my own use
      - the ability to run the model on my own computer
      - the ability to fine-tune the model
      - access to the model weights
      I liked Stability because their model weights were available, and I could do whatever I damn well pleased. If they were to adhere to this and offer additional services such as the services I mentioned above, I would probably be interested in paying a monthly or annual subscription to those services, provided they adhered to a reasonably affordable pricing model and don't implement any draconian policies or overreaching license agreements. If they aren't going to adhere to having openly available model weights, then I see no reason not to just use one of their competitors. Especially now.

      @@garrettbates2639 Honestly, I'd probably be willing to pay for an AI model if it was a one time payment guaranteeing free (as in not restricted) access to the model, any future versions, and the images generated from them. I don't even need it to be open source, I just want the freedom to generate the images and not be tethered to censorship or a subscription.

  • @RaumBances
    @RaumBances 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    As long as they are reasonable with their prices and they don't force subscription, I won't have issues supporting devs. I've always paid for free services and games that I use and enjoy. The saying for gamers is "free to play does not mean free to develop."

    • @peacefusion
      @peacefusion 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      right, there are plenty of ways we could have supported them, but they went full wacko on the license. its not about the prices, its about the user restrictions like derevitive and commercial permission.

    If Stability AI had put half of the effort which has gone into censorship into the quality of the model, it would be the best of all. Just try to create some image with e.g. captain jack sparrow in it. It will give you some guy with the clothes of jack sparrow and of course all the "old" problems with hands, face, eyes etc.

    for those who wanna know the situation with Forge
    1)Yes Forge is being essentially abandoned and its going to be an Experimental Testing Ground for Features to be used in A111 and the New name of Forge will be Forge Space and Forge Users are Recomended to switch to A1111 Dev Branch or master Branch Before 2.0 or users can keep using Current version of Forge in Dev2 Branch and Switch over to A1111 when 2.0 releases or users can stay with the current version of Forge using Dev2 Branch to help with the Developement of Features
    2)Some Forge Features will not be in A111 2.0 at its launch like Speed optimization and memory management wont be in A1111 2.0 at least for the time being that will come at a later date
