    “The villian doesn’t need a special feature to have a wyvern mount, I guess you guys don’t need one either.”
    That’s a valuable lesson; the rules are a structure to hang the game on, not an iron directive to straightjacket the game into “fun”.

      Lol I only do rules when there’s a significant reason to not let my player do it for example I won’t let them drive a fantasy car cause they have no basis to actually know how it functions without directions from the creator plus I won’t let them use it right away cause it’s crazy fast so either do the dc check or learn it the long way not to be harsh but to be balanced

    • @gobz8965
      @gobz8965 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I go with is it possible your character could do that then sure give it a try then make the appropriate check with the appropriate dc etc. But also understand actions have consequences if you try to do something stupid it may well backfire

      I find that the DM is actual following the rules in that there is no rule stating that the players cannot do what they did. I prefer that every PC and NPC be bound to the same rules meaning anything the NPC can do, the PCs can do and vice versa, barring any particular prerequisites or conditions. It keeps the game fair and honest rather than breaking the rules so a NPC can be "cool" because the DM had to cheat to do so which is not very fun as a player.

    My beloved NPC was a little girl named Anna. The setting dictated that Dragonborn were super rare. I love, love, LOVE playing Dragonborn so my DM let me. Well, every time we went somewhere new everyone marveled, stared, or panicked at the sight of me. I was a 7 foot tall silver Dragonborn with wings. One of the town's eventually became our home base. In that town, Anna became enamored with me, I was like a unicorn to her. We became good friends and I took her for flights and she brought me little trinkets and bits of wood. I whittled toys for her and told her stories of our adventures. I miss that campaign

      That is adorable, I only have ever had one npc I have gotten really attached to. I was playing a neutral evil tielfing warlock with a sorta devil may care attitude and a shit ton of bad habits like drinking and smoking and basically all the in game d**gs only with the party as a means to an end, but during a mission we were doing I met this kid working in a seedy bar I had gone too for a drink without the others and this kid was getting pushed around and....other things by the patrons, one thing about ny character he may have been evil awful and really a massive dick head but he has always been very protective of children and seeing this he kinda snapped, he killed half the bar including the bar keep and left leaving a bag of gold on the counter with a note on it created by illusionary script basically saying it was for the kid. We left the town shortly after but in down time I had my character keep making trips back to the town, I bought the bar and started it back up taking the kid under my wing as a pseudo son and that kid slowly pushed my character out of nuteral evil into true neutral where he stayed giving up his d**g addictions (for the most part) for him

Ok so this guy was the main antagonist for our lower level game play, basically a crime boss who had some major dirt on my character and another character, unfortunately once we got to a higher level he vanished and we couldn't find him. Once we reached level 20 I had figured out where he was (this was a different character by the way, I was a level 20 wizard in this) and well, I was not to be denied by a bunch of bandits, so I teleported right into his main base of operations while they were all asleep and grabbed him, then I took him too my dungeon, a place we had cleared out a long time ago that I had claimed for my personal experiments, well the poor bastard became a lab rat kept alive for it by clone

    Nice! It was interesting to hear how another group tackled the Hell's Rebels AP. In my own group's playthrough of the Menador Keep, we had a noble-born Bard that managed to keep Lucian distracted with drink while the Rogue went invisibly exploring all over the keep. But the Erinyes with True Seeing and Telepathy spotted the Rogue, raised the alarm, and a massive fight broke out. Lucian got onto the Wyvern mount, and was busy dive-bombing us, but a well-timed Fear spell panicked Lucian, making him lose control of his mount while fleeing in mid-air (he failed his Ride check) and eventually suicidally jumping off the cliff into the valley. We eventually managed to talk the wyvern out of depression over losing its master, and transformed it into a statue to carry around until we could find a better home for it.

    Rise of the runelord is a great campaign I've played a couple times.
    In one I was a half elf alchemist with a massive archeology bent who had figured out some of the basics of the ancient thasalonian language.
    and our second game I ended up rolling randomly a lawful neutral elven cavalier. He had a human adopted little sister who eventually became a bard.
    I really loved both games as our group where not murderhobos and did alot to form connections and even friendships with the npcs. They where very attached to the starting town, knowing all the npcs and even mourned the loss of any if them. Even the not so nice ones. (well, except one guy.. lol)

    Had a few "specialized" or "earned in-game" mounts over the years... I generally ruled by "Ego Contest" which you can look up in older editions of D&D... Basically a Character's ego is IQ plus "primary stat" (unless Wis is the better call at GM's discretion or Table convo') Divided by 2 (averaged together basically)... AND you can let the PC's actions and efforts effect the contests over time, while you work out the "narrative license" (build story reasons why) the two bond in such a way.
    One noteworthy Companion-bond was when a Ranger decided to raise a Displacer Beast instead of getting rid of the thing... OBVIOUSLY, there were incidents and antics galore, but we were kind of "that sort of group"... Some of my Players can get an idea stuck in their head(s) and just turn "iron core" in their resolve to either commit to the thing or die trying...
    Around the terms of "young adult"(?) it was both hilarious and heartwarming when the Displacer Beast (by then having gone through monikers like "damned tentacle cat" and "the popping pervert") saved the Ranger after a critical fumble nearly got him killed (tripped and sent prone)... Shadow was always "Shadow" to the Ranger, though... and I was partly running what the dice decided (as I'd assigned them to decide) and partly I was signalling that they'd reached their bond all together... It would still be time while the young-ish Displacer Beast finished growing up and "filling out" but I had a Character Sheet (for what it was worth) to hand over...
    Funny enough, that Campaign eventually got retired... AND both the Ranger and Shadow were famed across the land for being companions... as they were.
    ...I've found that even as an "evil GM" it helps not to present myself as always "the evil GM if I don't want murderhobo's to be an issue. ;o)

    • @jacobp.2024
      @jacobp.2024 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Exactly. My group that's played "The Shackles" before was *hurt,* and it shows. It's fun to do hardcore games, but it's only natural that when weaknesses are punished severely, players will make characters that lack them to survive.

    • @gnarthdarkanen7464
      @gnarthdarkanen7464 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jacobp.2024 It's a bit of a tricky balance... On the one hand, weaknesses are there to be exploited. It's a cornerstone of storytelling, and lessons should be learned about reinforcing things strategically or suffering consequences...
      BUT as a GM, you've also got to temper that with the ease at which you "wear it out" for the group if you repeat it too often, or if you overdo the punishment.
      SO... you pick and choose.
      I'd advise you to ease back on them around favored NPC's and Creatures and the like... Show that you're a consistently beneficent force in the Game, and they'll start building trust.
      Personally, I like to deal with a favorite NPC's death pretty much the same as a PC... I try to keep them just as rare simply because they SHOULD carry the weight and meaning in-Game just like a PC-death should. Some people simply are not destined to die of Cancer or Slipping on the soap and breaking their neck. ;o)

    In a campaign that I am DMing the party were planning to capture a guy for info on where he’d left a woman’s remains (she came back as a violent spirit and I homebrewed some rules for handling it). Part of the plan involved convincing his horse to go along with their plan. The Druid pulled this off, as they had Speak with Animals and managed to get advantage on persuasion by giving the horse an apple and appealing to its dislike of its own name (Ironclad), the smell of its master (he drank a lot) and generally being nicer to it.
    When the plan was executed, Ironclad did his part and his rider was captured. He then stuck with the party, who renamed him Stardancer (much to his delight). The responses that I had from him usually consisted of ‘What is blank’ or ‘I like blank’ due to his very low intelligence. But that led to answers which resulted in things like ‘What are friends? Are you my friends? I like having friends!’ Or ‘What is family? Family is like a herd? You are my herd now? You’re my family!’ And by the end of that session (third session so far, on December 26th of this year) the three party members just loved this horse.
    Now they have him as an NPC companion.
    The last time they took this well to an NPC of mine was when I made an intelligent raven familiar (Really an ancient amnesiac and guilt ridden sorcerer in disguise) whose main running gag was that he would do anything if he was given mead and agreed to become a familiar to the group’s necromancer in such a deal.

  • @alarkhar
    @alarkhar 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Sadly, I never had the chance to have a favorite NPC... my DMs and GMs usually had the classic "go here, task done, go away" style. The only exception was my superhero character's wife in a Champions campaign. She was one of the two last members of an extended stage magician family (the other was her brother, an ex superhero who got blinded during a calamitous event), and I was the one who had taken the identity of his brother and his two teammates after they were almost killed during the above mentioned event (gadgeteer + variable equipment = three different heroes in one). Basically, as her brother was a stage magic themed hero, my character needed someone to train him, and she was available.
    Cue bonding, falling in love and finally marrying.
    Mind you, many of my other characters had lots of social abilities, from the samurai that started studying as a kabuki actor to the dwarf warpriest being a pastry chef to the hardboiled irish detective with a true passion for the saxophone. They had the means, but they didn't have the chance. Which sucks.

I modified the AP for my home campaign. when the players turnde the evil weapon of ares champion into the church of Athena(there is alot of enmity between the two deities in my setting), the whole party received dietic wishes. The player with an undead dragon wished for a living and loyal dragon mount. cue a brand new soul for her formerly undead dragon mount and many "mommy" issues. 🙂

    First, I expect laughter
    One time with my party after clearing a dungeon we leveled up, I was a paladin 3 and after the lvl up fighter 3, so I went dragoon archetype. I wanted a dragon but my dnd didn’t know how to do stuff for dragoon’s so he said I couldn’t have a dragon but anything else was ok. Close enough I guess. Lol

    Oddly the best not murderhobo story from my players was them exploring the sewers under the city. Too many frightened tales of terrifying noised for them to ignore. So down they went. Well this turned into a nervous fright fest for the players. The sewers were real. Foul things floating in the water and a few pockets of methane that loved their torches. And to really frighten them. Someone or something had shredded practically all the ladders they found leading out. And very little life either. And every once in a while a mournful painfilled cry echoing through the tunnels. After hours of searching they came to a shaft with an intact ladder. And a young red dragon. They kept quiet but forgot to douse their lights. They watched the thing search around the chamber till it found the ladder. Then it began to try and climb its way out. But halfway up the ladder tore out of the wall from its weight and the creature slammed to the ankle deep filthy water on its already ruined wings. And they heard its pain filled wailing. That was when they realized it was also blind. Never even seeing their lights, it was injured, sick, and starving. It was the paladin that decided they needed to tend to the poor thing. "This isn't a monster. It is an injured child. And my place is to defend the weak and help the helpless." So the party managed to approach and calm the dragon and eventually lead him to the sewer exit by the river. The cleric working to heal the poor thing.
    Sadly the campaign ended due to schedule changes. But it is one I remember.

    So one time recently according to the time I made this post my brother made a Homebrew game it was like d and d slash a couple other games but d and d was most of the inspiration including some of the characters the magic system but most of it was still Homebrew so we got in the game with two other people who I forget their names let's call them a dancer and Hunter no for Shadowing yeah that's what their characters were basically one was a dancer or who was nude most of the time and only had a rag the other one was a vampire blood mage who also was a bit of a hunt was also bit of a night I guess the fighter class is the closest thing I can say to it and I was an elemental Master basically I wanted to have all the elements under my control because that let me do a lot of shenanigans so we start and it's supposed to be that we're storming Dracula's castle as he's getting resurrected it yeah seeing as one of us was a vampire hunter we were actually able to sneak past the guards roll encounter you see three hallways and a group of guards is chasing you down a hallway dancer rules to hide behind a pillar or a statue and I try and hide behind a different one Hunter goes and tries to face them which was a bit terrifying seeing as we rolled terribly for hide checks two soul dancer in all of them sold me so the answer was able to talk his way out of it and make them think he was with them however I am very happy for this moment because the blood mage can learn summoning magic in a lesser imp which I was can be is a summon familiar or maybe not a familiar but it can be summoned so I give them a story about Hunter is a mercenary and he summoned me to try and and take out the people in this Castle if they ever ask questions of of then what's a mercenary doing here or you say well the King was well Dracula was the people that were resurrecting Dracula we're getting suspicious that people might want to kill him so seeing as there were two preoccupied resurrecting Dracula they were wanting to pay a mercenary in order to kill them even though that was us so we snuck past them seeing as everything checked out we all went down different hallways to go out dancer went straight to the throne room or where Dracula was almost instantly I think he may have had a couple of encounters but I don't remember he made up for it I went down on mine and went to their explosives armory before encountering some more guards my brother who is the DM wanted me to just use two or three bombs and go and meet up with dancer who was at Dracula however I rolled bluff we were using bluff instead of for our persuasion checks I don't know if I said that earlier and it worked so I kept up my bluff and didn't have to use any of the bombs however Hunter his path he went and saw banshees however seeing as he was a mage he was immune to him seeing as he was a vampire he was immune to them so there is nothing that they could do then he found Dracula's son because apparently he has a son and he decided not to kill the child who was a master illusionist and would become the dmpc we all met up at the door to Dracula's throne roomand that's when dancer had a really good idea it wasn't a good idea but it worked perfectly so the answer had a cloak of healing potions basically whenever he took damage they'd shower for him and helped you would heal his injuries however seeing as vampires are classified as I'm dead it isn't like acid or anything like that in case you're wondering but it was still enough basically his he looked like a vampire tall pale skin so yeah he was able to trick Dracula using bluff into him being in exotic dancer which he actually was a dancer and he was well very exotic so he went and sat on Dracula's laugh he was an exotic dancer so he ruled that he probably would be able to do this and then he showered Dracula in health potion as well as stab him two times with razor claws we could have used Dracula's son to easier to make a fight easier but seeing as he took Dracula out in one turn I don't think it would have made it easier so that's how it oh an exotic dancer beat Dracula in one turn bite by a sitting on his lap and clawing at his neck

Then I rolled a 20 trying to persuade her to look for a better career, offering her help. 7 months later we were sidetracking the main quest marching straight to hell to free the soul of my character wife, which was swore to hell. Yup the random unnamed assassin.
