I think the greatest part of this song is that he is not forgiven or freed at the end, it's that he understands very well, no matter what his intentions were, a man is dead. He knows he is fully responsible, and he accepts the consequences of his actions. He finds salvation, not in prayer; the jury, or the family, he finds solace in the fact that he is being punished for what he has done because he knows there is no other way to bring the rider justice than to accept the consequences.

johhny cash showed us that country music could be compassionate. He asked hard questions and the country music scene hated him for it but im so grateful he kept on. Guns kill people, the prison system is corrupt, native americans deserve better, poor people deserve better. This is what johnny cash taught me.

I think many people underestimate the influence Johnny had on metal metal music. These are some of the most metal lyrics I've ever heard, and as someone who doesn't listen to country much, I still appreciate everything Johnny has done for not only country music, but music as a whole. Such a heavy song.

I first heard this song when I was 16 and in high school. I loved it. Then I continued my life. Joined the US army and went to Iraq and the stan. I learned what it was like to see the lone rider drop from his horse. Ive felt what its like to have a shot ring out across the land. Afterwards I felt what its like to want to run forever with my head in my hands. I hung my head, I hung my head. Having everyone around me thinking I was are a murderer. I knew the power of death over life. I widowed his wife and orphaned his kids.

Sorry you had to go through this. My grandfather served in Korea in the 24th infantry, he had to see some awful things. I’ve seen pictures of him standing next to holes with dead bodies in them. I always knew him as a loveable and funny man but my mom would tell me about how sometimes when she was younger he would drink and get angry. Later on when he was old he explained to my mom why he acted out like that, as a result of his mother going into fits of rage and threatening him when he was young, along with his experiences with war at a young age. A mix of a poor childhood and being a 25 yr old officer in Korea kinda messed with him, but luckily he got over the anger and made it through a long and happy life, he lived to be 92. I hope you can fight off your demons, and one day come to terms. Sorry, didn’t mean to make this reply all about my own stories, but I was just trying to tell you that many others have felt what you’re feeling and understand it. Stay strong, friend.

Plot twist for the movie... The line Rider is Jebb coming back from war where he survived hell all to get back to his only living family member... John. John had been vandalized and abused by people in town cause he was a "quiet" kid. There father was hung when John was a small boy, thus the reason for his quite demeanor. His mother died while Jeb was away due to sickness. John had made it only a year without anyone and had written Jebb letters but they all came backretuned. Return to sender.

Listening and crying to this song for almost 20 years now. It gets me every time. The imagery of the riderless horse continuing to run and the rider come to fetch him in the end are particularly moving to me. I always got the double meaning of “time to kill” but reading along today I realized that “I hung my head” also has a double meaning. “I hung my head in despair “ and taking responsibility for his fate. Like “ I dug my grave”

Songs can embody rage, triumph, heartbreak, and love but this is the only one, so far, I've ever found to embody the pure agony of guilt. Of doing wrong and knowing you did wrong, of having all the sympathy you could hope for but still knowing you did something wrong. Whatever the intention. It takes a special talent to achieve that.

Johnny Cash: the man, the myth, the legend. Proved yet again what a once-in-a-lifetime artist he was with this masterful version of a great song which didn't reach its full potential with the original version. This is the definitive "I Hung My Head" iteration; Cash really made it his own, improving on the original and in the process making a great song truly classic.

Gun Safety Rule #1 Never point a gun at anything you aren't willing to destroy
#2 always treat the weapon as if it's loaded even if your 100% sure it isn't
#3 Never out your finger in the trigger unless you are ready to fire
#4 Bullets go far so know what's behind what your aiming at and don't pull the trigger unless you are willing to destroy what's behind your target too
#5 Clean the weapon regularly to minimize the chances of misfires
Follow these rules when using fire arms and you'll never have any trouble with firearms

Kinda funny story - first time I heard Sting singing this, I said to my buddy 'Wow, Sting sure f'ed up this Johnny Cash song...' He laughed and told me Sting had written it. I didn't believe it until I researched it and found he was right. This song just SO fits Johnny more than Sting.
I could tell the same story about 'All Along the Watchtower' and Jimi and Dylan too - I thought Dylan f'ed up Jimi's song... :/

JC does all his covers incredibly but i still like stings original better. at least some versions. Well i cant find the sting version i liked... so maybe its just memory.
The lyrics to the song "I Hung My Head" by Sting on his album Mercury Falling.
This is what Sting had to say about the song in his lyrics' book:
"The song is now confirmed as a bona fide 'country' song, having been covered by the late, great Johnny Cash in the final years of his life. I was so proud to hear my words and music interpreted by the 'master,' although he did replace the last word in the second line of verse two, stream with sheen, for some reason. Whatever, he was probably just reading a misprint, and, even so, it didn't detract one bit from the final result.
"I wrote my version of the song in 9/8; the guitar riff just occurred to me that way and reminded me of the gait of a galloping horse dragging a corpse. The story of a terrible accident, guilt, and redemption materialized out of the title and out of the haunting image of the riderless horse" (Sting 195).
