My name is Margaret & I knew my Dutchman when he was a young man & today we are old together. He plays this song on his guitar & sings it to me.

Did any man, anywhere, have as sweet a voice and musical touch as Liam? He was born to sing, especially love songs. We're so lucky to have his recordings.

I just found this video on TH-cam. I was at this concert with my husband in 1983 during one of our many trips to Ireland. We always went to see Makem and Clancy whenever we could, also saw them perform a few times in the states, and also saw Tommy Makem perform solo. My husband passed away in 2003. Seeing this was very special. Thank you for posting it. ❤️

The Dutchman was written by Michael Peter Smith, who passed in 2020. Michael was American, but this song knows no national boundaries.

Love from Ireland , my father in law was and is a kerryman who's last wishes were to be buried in Kerry ,when he died his exwife buried him in Dublin, so I never felt good about this so I drove down to his hometown and dug 3sacks of kerrysoil and brought them to his graveyard in Dublin and emptied them onto his grave , he also loved a pint of Guinness so I poured one over his grave . Love from beautiful Ireland

The reason I love folk music so much is because it reminds us that life is so much bigger than today, and that we are so much more than individuals. Today is one link in a long chain; I am the product of the love of thousands of people who came before me; and songs like this keep us all connected through the years that go by. Thanks to Liam Clancy and Tommy Makem for keeping this music alive so more generations could remember it.

    What a gorgeous song.
Reminds me of the old couple who lived next door to us when I was a kid. Jonothan William Mason (Bill) and his wife Gloria. Bill was a Sergeant in some part of the Army, and served in WW2. "Glo" as he called her, worked in the munitions factories in West Wales, near Pendine Sands.
Glo used to bake cakes, and every Sunday afternoon she would give a huge wedge of Lemon Drizzle to my sister and I. It became a sort of tradition. By the time I left for Uni, Glo had developed Alzheimer's. Bill took care of her for years, he cooked Sunday lunch for them both and made sure Glo always looked her best. He used to go to the Supermarket and buy a lemon Drizzle cake, cut it into slices and put them into an old biscuit tin that Glo had kept. Then after lunch ,he would make tea and take a slice of cake out of the tin, telling Glo how lovely "her" baking was. She thought she had made the cake and it used to make her smile.
Bill died in the summer of 2001, he was 87. Gloria was taken into care and passed away sometime in 2007, she was buried next to Bill.

This song makes me cry from missing my husband. His disabilities were physical rather than mental, but he would sing with me while I took care of him. Sometimes he would call for me if I wasn't in the same room. And we grew old together, but 25 years just wasn't long enough.

I have an old love who has been in a group home for many many years. The last time I spoke with her she said she recalled what we did 50 years ago. Memories of yesterday she had none. Give your friends and family hugs when ever you can, that may be their only memories.

This Summer, in Doolin, where I was just passing through with a great friend, we went to a pub and listened to music till late. Sang Spancil Hill with the whole pub. We were leaving to go to bed, and stayed a bit in the black of the night with a few people we had met just that evening. One of them sang this song a capella. We were five, in a circle, holding hands or arms. This was one of those nights, you know, the memories of which you hold very close, closer, till they become an entire part of you.

Best rendition of this EVER, it was truly his song. I may do this one, but I'll never top this man. He is actually a cousin of my dear wife, and she remembers being on his knee, as a wee redheaded girl, and him singing Red-Haired Mary. No better childhood memories than that, I think. He is dearly missed by us all.

I was lucky enough to see him and Tommy Makem just north of Boston. We were the only "kids" there (with my mother), so we got a lot of attention from them, and the crowd loved it. At one point I was so sure a tiny drop of spittle from Liam landed on my cheek, and of course I never wanted to bathe again. I was forever in love........... What a treasure..... I hope you are able to do this song and give it new life and honor. Now, many decades later, in the most innocent sense, I am acting as a Margaret of sorts to my elderly father (my father's wife his truest Gentle Annie in every sense but name, her being Mary, having passed on), and I have the context to realize what a privilege it is.....

    • @TheHarperDave

What a grand memory. My wife tells me that previous incident she remembers was at Radio City Music Hall. They played Carnegie Hall too.
We got to see The High Kings (in which one of the younger Clancy plays and sings now), two weeks ago, and two of them, (one being distant family), took time to come 'round to see us perform later in the weekend, at the same festival. I knew we had arrived as true musicians, when one of them took the time to compliment out harmony and my arrangements. Even though I know the man I honestly blushed and stammered. These folks are still the icons of Irish folk music, even today.
If you get the chance to see the High Kings, don't miss it. (The same production company as Celtic Woman, and they are touring South just now....

I was taught this song as a very young man in Sydney many years ago by an Irish teacher. It's still the only song that actually stops me dead in my tracks when I hear it. I don't have a great deal of good memories from my childhood but this song and my teacher will forever stay in my mind 40 and some change years later. Thank you Maura and God rest your wonderful beautiful soul!! Little did we know that so many years later I would return to Ireland and settle down so close to where we both came from. The world seemed so large back then!! I'm just crying listening to this again!!

I was lucky enough to see Tommy Makem and the Clancy's in Belfast on a few occasions.Their repertoire of songs was unbelievable.Their talent a national treasure. They made folk music "popular" and you were proud to tell your school mates you were at a Clancy Bros. concert.I still play their songs when having a glass of wine and it's not just about sentimentality. Its spiritual,if reminds me of where I came from and that love, traditions and music form the backbone of what we are.The Dubliners also do this for me,but in a different way.❤❤

I often quote the line "You can't tell a madman with a shotgun / That he is not supposed to shoot no one." I used to have a specialty food shop (reformed chef) that I named Spoon River, and not after the book. I always dreamed of having you and Steve come perform.

Tonight (Sept 2, 2014) I was watching a documentary about the Dutch and their millennial battle with the North Sea, and it brought to mind a song I had heard in my teenage years about some Dutchman and the Zuiderzee.
Thanks to Wikipedia I'm here on TH-cam reliving the gentle lyrics of one of the great popular love songs of the century passed. (Not since "Danny Boy" has a song so needed to be sung by an Irish voice.)
Thank you, Mike Smith, for putting us in touch with our inner Dutchman.

@@christianhafer9819 It's a pity that Bob Dylan didn't actually acknowledge the source of the airs for some of his earlier songs like "Time on our side" which is "An Old Irish Air...!!!", Well Known To Many With A Love ,Or "Grá" Of Irish Music and Culture...!!!
Likewise he never actually acknowledged the songs and airs that he picked up from the "Clancy Bros" either in what we would say in this country are "The Unmistakeable
Hallmarks Of "A Cute Hoor...!!!"" He never acknowledged where his music came from and from whom he learned his craft...!!! Which says all that needs to be said about Bob Dylan's Character As A Person...!!! I wouldn't care to be sharing a house with him and expecting him to stump up his end of the rent and bills each month...!!! My guess is that with such flawed character traits, screwing people over would be just like breathing to him...!!!
You'd Be "Singing For Your Money At The End Of The Month...Without Bob As Backing Vocalist...Lol...!!!" If You Managed To Track Him Down That Is...Lol...!!!" A Mé Féiner...Lol..!!!"

Thanks Liam Clancy and may you rest in peace. The Zuider Zee doesn't exist anymore since a long time. Land has been reclaimed from the Zuidersee since more then 60 years. The part which remains beyond the Afsluitdijk is called Ijselmeer. Nevertheless the song keeps the old name in good memory...
