ERC has developed a great business model for the serious collector. I have not purchased any ERC to date, but as I watch reviews like this, it will be an easy decision at some point. This record - The Stooges - Fun House deserves recognition and a spotlight in punk history.
Great review. Fun House is my favorite Stooges album. It’s also the band’s most complex and difficult album penetrate. “Back in the day” my little group of friends and delinquents often said that the album sounded like “jazz”. Of course, we had no idea what jazz sounded like. Lol. But in a way, the band’s compositions had gotten more sophisticated from the first album. Today, I believe Iggy Pop calls the record their masterpiece. Nice to see the album getting it’s due. Iggy and the boys suffered many years of poverty with little recognition. Remember that even when they were a touring band they struggled to sell out small clubs in their own home town of Detroit. Thanks for highlighting this very cool band and record.
I was lucky to lay my hands on a copy of this lovely production, and have no original to compare to, but I'm so happy with it. It's crazy energetic and very 'crankable' 😊
Don’t get me wrong, I wish I could respect what ERC is doing. If there was any one record that I would have bought from ERC, the Stooges Fun House would have been it. But I just can’t get my head around the price. I am happy to pay for quality. I appreciate things that are made well. But there are much more rare out of print graphic design and photography books out there that are totally beautiful and cost a lot less. A new single disc vinyl shouldn’t cost more than a good watch, IMHO. If this cost half as much, it would still be at least $100 more than what is rational. You can still get a copy of the 50th anniversary Rhino box set for less than the original price of this record, and the 45 RPM cut from that box is fantastic, can’t imagine this new release sounds much better, if at all. Above a certain threshold, this kind of price point just totally sucks the pleasure out of record collecting. The fact that people have immediately turned around and listed this on Discogs for $1K makes the whole enterprise just seem really odd to me.
Vinyl is an imperfect medium with limitations to begin with , so I'll never understand spending ridiculous money on a record . To each his own , what's next , a 'one -step' of Never Mind The Bollocks by the Sex Pistols ;)
I have both the ERC and the US original. Both are great but different. I prefer the US original which has a little more open sound, a wider sound stage and most important the drums kicks you in the nuts! BUT, the ERC is such a nice listen too, very separated and smooth on the ears without loosing energy. However, back to back, the US original has more omph! Still a very, very good release! Kudos ERC!
The ERC releases are all about giving you the master tape with no EQ or other processing. I'd imagine the OG was mastered for vinyl with some amount of treatment, as almost every record is.
I can confirm that the german and the US First sound also great….exactly as you described…detailed, dynamic and great soundstage…i own both releases in great condition…👍 great music, one of my favorites!
@@Michael45RPM The US pressing sounds a little brighter and more treble-emphasized, more spacious, airier, a little more detailed...the German pressing has a little more punch and sounds earthier...overall, not a big difference, more of a subtle one on my system...both pressings are really fun. The incredible energy of the songs is transferred to the listener on both pressings. The german pressing has the US matrix, so both are nearly on the same level….
Hi Michael, No questions, very nice edition, the thick cover and the good sound quality. The original from the USA also had this label. Very successful new release. I have the German first pressing on the golden Elektra label. The German first pressing is also very difficult to get. The later German pressings had the Butterfly label. best regards DJSocki
I preordered this from ERC the day it was announced. The next day I found an OG US copy in the wild. Still need to do the head to head, but the OG is gonna be hard to beat. My only complaint with the ERC; no pictures of the tape boxes this time around. I know I need help;)
I was somewhat surprised to see Fun House receive the ERC treatment, given its focus on jazz and classical. And given the exclusivity of the product. I was in high school during the 1970's and living just outside of NYC. The punk scene at that time spoke to me, coming as an antidote to much of the pop music. I have a mid 70's pressing of this record and have played it often. I would love to hear "Dirt" by this pressing on a high-end system.
The Stooges (debut), and Raw Power seem to feature more in the oral history of Punk. John Lydon said that when he was 20, Raw Power was a key album for him; Johnny Marr has often mentioned Raw Power...and The Slider (T.Rex). Billy Duffy's Iron Cross, circa LOVE (The Cult) was inspired by Ron Asheton circa The Stooges (debut). Fun House is something else; on a whole other level to the other two.
Fun House of course is a top 5 all timer rock lp. Sadly ERC is not accessible to me from a price point and timing perspective. The good news, arguably, is Rhino HiFi is putting out the Stooges self-titled soon. There’s hope yet for Fun House. L.A. Blues!
My copy had seam split as the shrink wrapping wasn’t tight enough. Asked for a replacement- but why oh why can’t ERC ship the damned thing outside the sleeve. That won’t hurt the fancy packaging.
the first album was great.....their 2nd album , Funhouse......is superior. I have the deluxe CD set which has outtakes.....incredibly amazing album. Initially, it may be a tricky listen..but as time goes on, you start to really LOVE this album.
Hey Michael. Hope you’re doing well. Thanks for your thoughts on the Fun House. Patrivk played the ERC, and even on TH-cam you can hear that the ERC sounds fantastic.. Very cool he bought a sealed original! Damn….ROG did a great job with with Funhouse too. Iggy is still killing it live, and something’s wrong with his hip, but he doesn’t give a sh*t. 😂
Glad your happy with it , Enjoy ! Vinyl is an imperfect medium with limitations to begin with , so I'll never understand spending ridiculous money on a record . To each his own , what's next , a 'one -step' UHQR of Never Mind The Bollocks by the Sex Pistols ;)
During the recording of Funhouse The Stooges were living in squalor. Their manager visited their collective apartment and found them crawling with lice and having developed serious Class A drug habits. They stripped the studio of baffles to capture their live sound and it’s as far removed from audiophile intent as it’s possible to get. It’s a raw proto punk LP. It’s not concerned with soundstage or fidelity or accurate bass, mids or highs. So an ERC cut is laughable in these circumstances. Another review from this chap that has nothing to do with the music. At one point he calls it “beautiful” 😂. He didn’t have a copy of Funhouse prior to this review, which means he bought it because it’s an ERC release. Listen to the music not your equipment or the audiophile quality folks!
You may love the band, their music, the album, but the quality of their recordings have always been on the wrong side of shit. MFSL, ERC, half speed, 45RPM, tube cut, DMM, no matter what you do or who is the mastering engineer, the recordings are turds and no amount of exotic our perfume is going to make it smell good or sound good. Just get the CD. Even an MP3 is as best as it will ever get.
I love this album, discovered the Stooges Fun house via my favorite band Drivin' n' Cryin!!!
Audiophile Stooges? Hahaha
It's a joke

Greatest rock 'n roll album of all time

Fun house is one of my favorite records of all time. Would have loved to get my hands on a copyright. Awsome video.
Thx a copy or copyright?
@@Michael45RPM lol a copy
Nothing says "I've got more money than sense" better than buying a £400 record.
A fantastic Rock Album, perfectly produced by Don Gallucci and engineered by Brian Ross-Myring. My congratulations ! 😉
The US 1st pressing sounds amazing!
Right On! I Love my OG copy💥💜❤
You would love the US OG! It sounds Fantastic! My copy is still mint, Thank you as usual for your very fair review
Such a great album! Groundbreaking and really in your face
Another huge banger by ERC👌😊

Thank you for your attention to the Stooges. Iggy played my university. However, I missed it. Fun house is quite a live collection.
Fantastic Mr Michael, Keep it up!😊
Funhouse is now a classic album to some. Took a little while for people to catch up.

Have you done the ERC/ OG US comparison yet?
@@TL3721not yet, tons of things ahead of it. I’ll report back here once I’ve done it though
I agree with everything said. I love my copy

It’s one of most revered rock records and rightly so
Oh My Gosh ! Extraordinary Album
I never had any interest in that company. I am glad you like it and chose to afford it.

Hi 👋🏻
As far as ERC “branching out” from Jazz and Classical, don’t forget Love and the Doors;)

I wish Düsseldorf were a little closer; I could have dropped off my OG copy for a comparison.

Just staring at my tracking all day as it’s out for delivery

Thank you very much for your nice video!! I would have loved to see a comparison aswell, but anyway enjoyed the video very much!! Thank you Michael!!
I have the 2010 Rhino reissue which sounds nice from what i remember.
Its hard to make this album sound bad imo
Love this album and toyed with the idea of buying the ERC but the price was a bridge too far for me...

I never use record's for background music, that's what CDs are made for!😅 Nothing against CDs!😊
Do you set the anti-skate the same as the tracking force?
