  • On Monday morning, we learned that the Pittsburgh Penguins and captain Sidney Crosby are reportedly close to finalizing an extension that would keep him in Pittsburgh for the remainder of his career. Hunter and Patrick discuss why this is good business for the franchise, what it means for the rest of his career, and how they could take one last run with him ( at some point) before he hangs it up. They also discuss how the engagement farming and the unhinged conversations regarding Sid's contract can hopefully be put to rest when this gets announced. After that, they check in with some of the prospects at development camp, including Brayden Yager and Owen Pickering. They discuss how it looks like men against boys out there for Yager against everyone else and how Pickering has put on some muscle. They then end the show with Sergei Murashov coming over from Russia and what that could mean for the Penguins.

A few seasons ago, the mindset was that as long as the Pens had Sid, Kris, and Geno, they had a shot at a Cup. In recent years, Geno's play has declined, while his PIM have gone up due to him taking lazy penalties. Kris' decision making seems to, more and more, favor riskier plays since his second stroke.
Can Sid and Erik, with help from Kris and Geno, lead the team on a deep playoff run? With some better team defense, I think it's possible. I don't think that it'll be one of those super dominant runs where there was, really, no question if they'd win the Cup.

Crosby deserves what ever contract he wants. Im thankful the rumors of him leaving pittsburgh will finally end. Media blew it out of proportion because the extension didn't get done immediately. Glad to hear murashov made it over for prospect camp. I'm really high on him. I'm high on blomqvist too but think murashov may be better. Russia is the premiere hotbed for goalies lately. Vasililevsky, shesterkin, nabokov, askerov. Its insane the goaltenders that country is putting out. Think blomqvist and murashov will be the 1a, 1b tandem of the future. Yager is going to be a top 6 forward. He's looking like a steal at 14th overall. I'm glad to hear pickering is getting bigger. My only worry with him is he has never scored double digit goals in juniors. Makes me think he will be a defensive defensemen with limited offensive touch in the nhl

Prospects can be unpredictable but how much a steal would the Pens have if Murashov makes it to the NHL and becomes a good goalie? It would be the one thing Hextall struck gold on haha!

I watch the Dangle gang too at times. I think they to some degree had a point in that if Crosby wants to have a good shot at a cup, then going to play with the Avs is that good shot. But I said it on their video and I'll say ot here. If Sid wants to stay, Sid stays. If Sid wants to go, Sid goes. This is all in his hands. Seems like it is to stay he wants, and that has been what he has signalled all along the way too.
As for having the cake and eating it, I think you sorta can. The team wasn't ass last season. By plugging the holes with some value moves, they can retool while giving Sid the chamce to will the team to the playoffs. It's going to be REALLY hard next season though. They need to fix the PP or it won't work. Now that Tarasenko chose the Wings, another top 6 winger who can scire goals is needed. Laine is worth taking a shot at. The Pens are at a spot where gambling on reclamation projects makes sense, kinda like what the Caps are doing with Dubois.

SDPN is entertaining, especially for Canadian fans, and they make things accessible for newer hockey fans, but they get a LOT of information wrong. Like simple stuff like players' names and mostly anything non-Toronto. Like they said Celebrini did better than Jack Hughes in NCAA, but Jack never went to College! Lol. So everything SDPN says should be taken with a grain of salt the size of Utah. The Crosby talk is a lot of wishful thinking, and people not understanding that different players have different priorities. So, it comes down to what is most important to Sid, not what the media and podcasters or anyone else thinks.

Sid has more than earned whatever he wants, without question. At first Dubas was confusing me this offseason, but I think I'm starting to understand what he's doing. I think he knows this team has no shot for the next year or two, so I think right now he's just collecting as many draft picks as possible, and then a few years from now Sid is gonna be surrounded by Yager, Howe, and whoever else and hopefully make a playoff run. I think that's the goal, a 2 or 3 year rebuild.

The thing i find frustrating the most is i wanted this stuff to start like 5 yrs ago. Rutherford was trading 1st rd picks & prospects for guys like Ryan Reeves, Derick Brassard & even Zucker. My brother & i talked about it at the time & were just absolutely stunned at getting such mediocre unimpactful player that somehow people were convinced could help Pittsburgh in a cup run. Those types of moves really screws up franchises for a number of yrs. There have been yrs where Pittsburgh didn’t have a draft pick in the first 2 or 3 rounds.
I understand the rules of expansion draft but to lose Fleury and mot get anything from him kind of hurt too. Which is why i really thought they should’ve tried moving either 58 or 71. Yes i understand mo move clauses but it can still be done.
Now they decide to do this soft rebuild or whatever & have squandered the last several yrs of 58, 71 & 87. It is absolutely baffling to me.

I definitely think the Reaves trade was bad (because he wasn’t a need at all) but I personally didn’t have as much of a problem as the other two. Brassard was a good player at the time but just threw a fit because he didn’t wanna play 3C. Zucker was also fine, biggest problem with him was health. They were moving the futures and such because they were still in win now mode which I was totally good with. The main problem, at least for me imo, was them screwing up the fringes of the roster with inadequate depth. It hurt them badly especially these last couple of years

I completely envy Tampa and Vegas for their activity against the boring, conservative NHL, keeping their roster in prime age, and not getting sentimental about the past. Also nobody ever built a winning roster on UFAs, its a bad idea and a sure way to continue to have older players on inflated contracts.

The sooner sid signs, the better it is for the rest of the fanbase and league to put these silly Canadian's takes and headlines, TO. BED. Why was it a conversation anyways? Toronto media should worry about their own team that has only one second round game win in the past forever when it comes to franchise, LEAGUE CHANGING players moving or stalling in signing extensions. Even just thinking about it gives me a headache.. lmao

With respect, you can't say "we want to see this team win", while at the same time advocating for them to slow down the rebuild and the return to contention, by indulging in feelings like this.
Your priority is wanting to see them honor Crosby and the core at the cost of progress towards a 6th championship. Nothing wrong with that. Fans are satisfied after 3 Cups in the Crosby era and are grateful to them. It's understandable.

I think we discussed it I wanna say back in April (my memory could be jaded it’s ok lol) but I think even if they got rid of the big 3 like today for example, it would still take a while for them to get back to being a contender. I’m not sure how much progress they’d fully make tbh but I’m also not sure how much progress this “retool on the fly” will make either. Or rebuild on the fly lol. But to your point, yes I want to see them go out together after everything they’ve done. I do think Sid could win a title on Colorado for example if he wanted to but he’s always preached loyalty so I’m happy it looks like he’s gonna stay. Would also look insanely weird to see him in another uniform 😂

@@LockedOnPenguins Yes, it will take long, but doing this will make it unnecessarily longer. We just don't value those wasted years yet cuz we're not living in them. But we will soon.
Crosby is worth a lot still. Plus it's more than just the return for him. That's 8.7M + 3x10M of cap space that could be used towards taking on bad contracts in exchange for more picks. All of that combined is pretty significant in accelerating this process.
But instead it's gonna be funnelled towards someone who can't make them win rounds anymore, won't be mentoring players who will be here when the team contends again (like Dubas bs' about), and will only make them draft lower for the next few years.
From a winning perspective, this makes zero sense. It's just feels, straight up. It's setting cap ablaze, willingly.
I'm personally not ok with my team surrendering like this. That's not the Penguins I remember, and grew up loving.
When they sucked before they used to do it with the end goal in mind.

    • @LockedOnPenguins
      @LockedOnPenguins  20 วันที่ผ่านมา

I kinda disagree on this making it longer. It was always gonna be long no matter what, and I was ready for it because I was expecting them to keep going all in until they couldn’t anymore. The “wasted years” were honestly these last few because multiple regimes screwed up building around the core even when they were producing (heck, even last year was wasted).
As I think I said a couple of months ago, having Crosby retire a Penguin is worth a lot more to me than just cap space and insignificant picks or prospects that probably won’t amount to anything. Considering what he and the core have accomplished, I’m more than fine having them retire here.
I also really don’t think they’re gonna draft that low next year because I don’t think they’re a playoff team as it stands right now. And sure when they sucked before they had an “end goal” in mind, but that was them tanking. You’re not gonna see this team legit tank like the Sharks for example until the big 3 go. I think if they were to sign off on being dealt, then it would be easier for them to just blow it up and tear it down.
The main problem for me is them trying to have their cake and eat it too. Pick a direction. I was long advocating for them to go for it until they can’t anymore but that’s not happening now. But they also won’t blow it up and a big reason for that is the core guns don’t want to leave (which I understand completely btw)

@@LockedOnPenguins A realistic yield from the trade and weaponizing Sid's 39 million in cap space, would be like 6+ picks in the first 2 rounds. That's what they're surrendering by taking this course of action. The math starts getting pretty good with hitting at that point, especially if you draft in the top 5 instead of finishing 9th in the East or w/e.
On top of that, Sid being here makes others stay as well. It's a domino effect. We can get nice returns for Pettersson and Karlsson (50%). Bunting could be dealt right now. Rust might have waived.
But instead they're just gonna stay here, as we watch their value deteriorate.
Next year is a deep draft. Being in the top 8 or w/e instead of 15th could be meaningful.
I totally agree that the last 2 years were wasted. All of these guys shouldn't have even been re-signed. Malkin, Rakell, Rust, Letang. All should have gone. The rebuild should have started 2 summers ago.
I got no problem with you valuing Sid over the team. But for me, he is not everything. I care about the players below him too, and the quality of the future. It's always been about the Penguins for me. Priority #1.
Hornqvist was my favorite player, but I supported the trade anyway, because it was in the best interest of the team.

    • @LockedOnPenguins
      @LockedOnPenguins  20 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

I’m not sure they’re surrendering 6+ picks in the first two rounds by not dealing him. I see how rental trades go for players and while yes, Crosby is obviously in a different league, more often times than not you’re going to be underwhelmed by a return for a rental at the deadline.
As for Pettersson, we’ve started to say they could deal him at some point, heck Bunting could too at the next deadline if he has a good year, and I think he will considering how he ended the season with Malkin.
Next year’s draft is good you’re right and right now I see them being in the top 15, which is fine! Heck I could see them top 10 if they have a truly bad season and that’s not out of the realm of possibilities. I don’t think it’ll be bad enough for them to draft top 3, but I can still see them in the top 10.
As for your comment about two years ago, I wholeheartedly disagree. That wasn’t the time to rebuild at all. They came off a series that they should’ve won but got screwed when Sid went out and when they couldn’t buy a save. It was always in the team’s best interest to bring 71 and 58 back because A) they had no means of replacing them and B) they were still going for it, and they were right to do it. Where they went wrong was the depth pieces. The core was still PLENTY good enough to win, but multiple regimes screwed it up by adding the wrong pieces around them. If they didn’t screw it up, we probably wouldn’t even be having this conversation honestly haha
Dont get me wrong, I care a ton about the future of this franchise and getting that next cup. I also supported the Hornqvist trade because I liked getting Matheson back and I felt that contract for Hornqvist wouldn’t age well. But when it comes to Sid, if he wants to stay, then he’s gonna stay, and I’m totally on board with it considering everything he’s done

Sid shouldn't sign a contract with the Pens this summer. 87 should get traded for a ransom at the deadline. Trade Crosby to the Oilers for Philip Broberg, Dylan Holloway, and Sam O'Reilly (or a 1st or Savoie). That would restock the Pens organization with 3 pieces. 87 and 97 could win the Cup together in Canada adding to 87's legacy. 87 should then sign 1 year deals with the Pens as a UFA for the rest of his career. 87 being dealt at the deadline yearly gives him the best chance to win the Cup and rebuilds the Pens quickly.
