I cant see why not, but I would recommend backing up your device before any replacements or you will never be able to go to stock firmware again. You still need to unlock the device in the first steps on my other video. You should be able to unlock with a new chip installed.
I'm not skilled enough to do this but I really want my unit hacked, can I ship my unit to you to hack? What would the charge be & how long would it take...
Hi , I upgrade my game watch, change the flash to 16M, are you able to turn g&w on immediately after that? I plug in the usb-c cable and pressed the on/off button but it does not work, the screen was black. Is it normal ? Do I have to use stlink to burn the system before I could turn it on?
Hello, great tutorials. What commands did you do after replacing the ic chip? Is it a special command for the larger chip or you repeated some steps to put the games back on. I already unlocked the chip.
When you replace the chip before flashing, are you able to turn the game and and watch on to a blank white screen? Or does it remain a blank black screen as if its not getting power until you flash it? Thanks.
@@RetroResinCA just checked this out, it doesn’t have legs lol but I’m sure there’s a way of soldering it down. But if it works out, definitely 64mb would be ample storage.
Hello Terry thanks for all, i have a question, i dump my firmware and patch and install retrogo on my orginal 1mb flash and it was working, after that i install the 16MB ram, and the g&w was booting retrogo but error when launchin game so i decide to put back my original firmware, the procédure was running well bunt now black screen, i cannot power on the G&W, di you have a ns idea ? Thanks a lot
hello, i have a question the dump if we copy into a eeprom and soldering it in bord does it work or we need to unlock the st processor ? i'm very confused thanks (PS i have already make a copy of my eeprom with MINIPRO )
When clicking the link to the chip it says: "FLASH - NOR Memory IC 128Mb (16M x 8) SPI - Quad I/O 104MHz 8-SOP". It's 128 MB but you can only use 16 MB of those? Or am I missing something? Edit: Hmm, maybe it is 128 Mbit and not 128 MB.. But it is still 16 MB x 8?
the amount of usable flash is 16 megabytes, the chip is 128 megabit with with 16M x 8. When i go to flash it shows 16mb of free space. I think the other space is for firmware and such
@@RetroResinCA ah I see. Thank you! Bought a couple of these and a couple of 64 MB also. The 64 MB seems a lot harder to solder though. No legs. I got a spare G&W so at least something to play around with. Thanks again man. Excellent videos!
Anyone know of any European sites where you can buy these chips? I can't seem to find any and it is waaay to expensive with shipping, tax, duty, processing fees to get it shipped from the US.
no its easy, so many tutorials choose to do it the hard way, easier to remove the pcb from the plastic shell, then use a hot air gun and wick to de solder the chip, and place the new chip in cleanly.

Anymore info on larger storage - MX25U51245GZ4I00 ? You going to try this next? The IC is relatively cheap too, which is good.
I know some larger chips have no legs, have not tried one yet, ill post a video if i do
@@RetroResinCA ...maybe will be problem with 166Mhz flash frequency...original on g&w have 75MHz
I've got 9 games on mine, including the original 3 on stock firmware, on the 1mb spi. I'm about to try a 128mb spi, waiting for it in the mail.
did that work? 128 sounds perfect
some flux and heatgun would have been faster, cleaner and easier to get it off and on :D nice video
yes hahaha i have learned alot since then!
Can't you use flux and a solder wick to desolder the chip from the PCB?
yes
Can I just stack the new chip on top of the old one and run both chips?
Yes and no. In theory yes, but no method exists, you would have to create a method to read from both memory addresses

Whoa..
Can i first install the chip before i do anything and than flash?

Are there corbon pads for Start and Select above B and A? They are present in the Zelda g&w

It will show a white blank screen from what remember!
Thanks!
idk how they even managed to find a 1mb flash chip in 2020
16 mb is kinda small for this work. any news on larger chip? great job, thanks.
yes you can add a larger chip

I saw briefly somewhere that 64Mb is supported, Is that correct?

How many NES Games can you put on that Device?. Maximum of how much bytes can you upgrade the Flash Memory
i think 64MB SPI flash
can a modded game and watch run gameboy color? I would love to play pokemon crystal on this

No, people are poor and work all fkn day.
Part Used:
MX25U12835FM2I-10G (FLASH - NOR Memory IC 128Mb (16Mx8) SPI - Quad I/O 8-SOP)
Other possibilities?
MX25L25645GM2I-08G (FLASH - NOR Memory IC 256Mb (32Mx8) SPI 8-SOP)
S25FL127SABMFI101 (FLASH - NOR Memory IC 128Mb (16Mx8) SPI - Quad I/O 108 MHz 8-SOIC)
the retrogo cfw has a code check only for the presence of a 64MB flash or the regular 1MB one. so it would have to be accounted for in the firmware.
