the story goes that Star Trek's Gene Roddenberry offered the role of Captain Kirk to Mr. Lord-but he wanted part ownership in the franchise along with a salary--Roddenberry "balked" at that and instead offered the role to William Shatner-Mr. Lord obviously had the foresight to realize that Star Trek was going to be a future huge success and wanted a "bigger piece of the pie" than just a salary
In my opinion, Hawaii Five-O was the best cop show in the history of TV; Had the best opening and closing theme music; and in his prime (age 48 in 1968) Jack Lord was the handsomest man I have ever seen.
Yes it is! When my older sister was a teenager in the late 1960s, she played that theme song on her guitar. I was just a girl at the time, but I loved watching and listening to her playing that.
I watched H5O for 10 of its 12 seasons. I loved it not only for being a police show, but also how it showcased both the good and bad in Hawaii. One vital point you missed about Kam Fong: he was a retired police officer who was called upon many times for advice on police procedures at that time. James McArthur was scheduled to appear in the 2010 reboot of the show, but died before he could be there.
Jack Lord frequented the same grocery store in Kahala where I grew up, sporting sandals, shorts, Hawaiian shirt and straw hat. I recall he was personable and approachable whenever I saw him.

One of the top TV shows of all time. This series is as compelling and enjoyable to watch today as 50 years ago. Just goes to show what great writing, casting, acting and awesome venue can get you ... and they didn't need a lot of high tech wizardry every 30 seconds to compensate for a lack of the aforementioned attributes.
I missed watching this show. It has been a staple of our weekly must-watch tv series then. We never miss an episode of its twelve season run. Jack Lord was definitely my favorite character. I would love the watch all episodes all over again.
My favorite character on Hawaii Five O was a toss up between Jack Lord and Zulu. I at one time, was a resident of Hawaii and remember watching them film 🎥 one of their episodes on Bishop Street in the financial district. They used First Hawaiian Bank driveup area for the cast for lunch area (it was after banking hours, on a Saturday), I'll never forget that day. Most of the scenes are real, but some are created for the sets too.
Jack Lord was made for the role of Steve McGarrett. He was the life force of the series and inspired me in many different ways. He was my favourite actor but I liked all of the cast. Number 2 after Jack was Herman who played DS Duke Lukela - uniquely suited to the role. Hawaii Five-O will live in my memory forever. Garry. Australian by birth. Hawaiian by choice.
I watched the first 5 shows of the remake, trying to gibe it a chance, New shows sometimes take a few episodes to get their bearing, but it just never sold for me.
My fav was always Jack Lord, I loved the opening music, the seriousness of Officer Steve McGarret, always serious and always on the job. My second fav is Chin Ho Kelly, Yep the "Irish" guy. He gave the show authenticity, and he was also a retired detective. He was genuine and allowed himself to be supervised and minimalized, something that great actors can do. Always there, and always a friend, straight up conservative and watching his P's and Q's, he would never let the series down. Hawaii 5 O was my favorite show ever!!!! I watch these old clips on YT and get misty eyed, but when I was fourteen years old, I was in heaven for 60 minutes every week. God Bless you Steve McGarrett, you gave me a wonderful teen age journey. I joined the Army at 17 years old, got stationed in Korea, on the way flew through Honolulu, Tokyo, and to this day, the orient still calls to me. Thanks Steve, to a lower middle class kid who grew up in Louisiana on his Dad's cattle ranch. You gave me a weekly departure and I will never forget you in that role, although we all know it was a show! I later owned a 1968 Ford Galaxy and loved to make those fast car take offs and sudden stops you were famous for in your Ford in front of the State Police Headquarters.
@@FactsVerse All were good, but the ones where the Evil "Wo Fat" would show up and cause mayhem in Honolulu were the best. Somehow the Future of the World hung in the balance as McGarrett and 5 O frantically did their work to stop him!!! Also, the episode where the government researcher came up with a super virus to kill everyone on the island to show the evil of Germ Warfare, I think Ms. Swit who later played in MASH, starred in that one. I was so impressed by the episode, by 1982, I had become a Commissioned Officer in the United States Chemical Corps. And then sent to Germany to counter the Cold War's hold on Nuclear, Biological, and Chemical Threats. I retired from the US Army in 1998. Unlike McGarrett, I didn't join 5 O!
Jack Lord was my favorite. I also liked Denning. You forgot to mention that Jack Lord was the first CIA character in the first James Bond. They were careful not to give him too much exposure because he looked better than Sean Connery. The role of Felix was given to American actors logically. Jack Lord had great stage presence.Being tall and handsome, I am sure the director did not want him to outshine the star, Connery. Jack was also a good actor.
As Jack Lord fans, there is NO need to mention that Jack Lord was “the first Felix character (CIA secret agent)” in the first James Bond movie. Let’s keep that fact our “SECRET.” 😎
I might've already commented on this, but grew up walking distance from the Five O studios off the slopes of Diamond Head growing up in Honolulu. The First (second location?) warehouse-studio was rented by the series from the Hawaii Army National Guard of all things (State of Hawaii). The Man who Played the Governor went to my Church when I was a kid (Waiokeola Congregational...right across from Kahala Mall). Zulu and Dano both lived next door to us (Coconut Ave) when me and my family/Parents First Moved to Hawaii in the early 70's....right on the Beach (our "Beach House"). Two episodes filmed at our Next Door Neighbors house, and Later, one Episode of Magnum. Tom Selleck Fell Asleep on our Lawn in between his take on this particular episode being shot...Those were the days...Memories...
Jack Lord was my favorite actor. His drive for perfection did make some of the other actors uncomfortable, but I believe that is what made the show so good and last as long as it did. You could tell in the last season that Lord was tired. I wonder if he had begun his fight with Alzheimer's but didn't know it yet. When the series came out on dvd, my son gave me the complete set for Christmas as he knew I was a big fan. I have enjoyed re-watching them over the yrs.
I actually love all of the characters on the show ... each in their own way. Hawaii Five-O is still one of my favorite TV shows today. I thought it was a shame when Zulu was fired, especially the way it happened. I've always loved seeing Kono and Chin.
I love the fictional character of Steve McGarrett, which doesn't automatically mean that I like everything that Jack Lord did as a person. Lord wasn't exactly enthusiastic about Al Harrington as Ben Kokua neither, who was chosen as a replacement by Leonard Freeman. After Freeman's death, the character of Ben Kokua disappeared rather quickly from the show as well. Which also was the result of Jack Lord's interference. That's why I always separate in my personal evaluation what an actor does as a person and what in his role.
Hawaii Five-O brings back a lot of good memories of when I was a child watching thie show with my parents. I miss them so much along with the 60s 70s and 80s!
Best theme music ever ! Danno was my favourite.Garret had the most presence though.and drove the show."bookem' Danno".Zulu and the others were good and rounded out the team.

Don't wish to pick a favorite, they were all part of a great show. I will be 65 this November and so many of the people in my favorite shows are gone now. Also, it seems a disproportionate amount died young too, unfortunately. Sounds like most of the members here made it to elder ages. RIP all of you, and thanks for the many hours of entertainment.
The opening scenes with the theme song set the tone, it was very smart for them to keep this throughout the series, the photography was magnificent in the opening scenes and throughout the series, Jack Lord set the tone as the main character, he was a perfectionist and his high standard contributed to the success of the series, I love the other actors too they all contributed in their own way, I really don't think I remember anyone that was miscast. I still watch the reruns on a regular basis.
@@doristhomson3082 There was an attempt on a 2nd reboot back in the mid 90's where Danno was running for Gov, and the reboot didnt sell. He was asked to be part of the recent reboot, but he was too sick to portray his iconic role. On one of those episodes, they honored MacArthur.
He was a real police officer. He retired, got bored, and took up acting. He contributed to the more realistic elements of the show. He was also said to have a really great sense of humor.
Macgarrick was my favorite actor of Hawaian 5-0. The opening of the program has music that is catching .At my age of almost close to I 80 i can still hum it. thank you for this television show it was a great show in my opinion. TORONTO
That episode on the video beginning is "Cocoon", the pilot movie. I watch it often! The huge statue in the opening credits is The National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, or the Punch Bowl cemetery. There are some YT videos that show the face of the hula dancer who is on all the opening credits for the entire series.
Danno: I still use the 'book 'em, Danno" as a fun cliche from time to time. I have a particular affinity for Lahaina as I've been there four times. My middle son now lives just north of Killuaea and at least I have a real reason to go back once this Panicdemic is over!
After moving to Hawaii over 30 years ago, I felt that many of the Polynesian characters were based on stereotypes which I believed until I moved here then I looked at the series with a more critical eye. The Polynesians it seemed to me were always in a subordinate role as characters unlike the new Hawaii 5-0 series
Jack Lord made that show go. Some comments say he was demanding and overbearing, but when you demand the best from people you usually get it, and Lord could command respect from his cast members, and they would deliver the type of performance that made the show great. Without Jack Lord, that show likely would not have made it. I never watched the new sequel series, but I doubt it could match the original.
I don't think he command respect, he demanded it. I think this show made his career and net worth. What happen to him after this show ended? People of wealth usually have huge egos, but for a so so actor to act this way, the network probably thought this show would fail without him.
It was my first television favourite in the year 1980, on Channel 33, Dubai. Jack Lord, my Hero. I used to wait for the clock to strike 8pm, to watch the action.🥰🥰🥰
Fun Fact..... Jack Lord Always wore long sleeve Shirts. He had tats, & Thought it would not Look good on TV. Richard Denning played A doctor, in a show Called the “” Flying Doctor”” May they all Rest In Peace knowing They brought a lot of Joy to people ! 🌺🌺🌺
Perhaps one the best shows ever indeed....the selection of characters was perfect for the role they played....the most powerful classic theme song introduction is second to none......what can I say....the creator is most talented to grip billions of audiences till this very day of the 28th of December 2022!
@@FactsVerse I love them all....the majestic roles of Jack Lord and Fong were most riveting...the "book him Danno". The mystically authoritative voice of Jack Lord in a seemingly foriegn country yet it is the 50th state of the union. The sensational contrast of the combination of characters, places and sceneries. The flying belly shot of the 747 above with switching speed of scenes seemed so fictional yet real.....then the breathtaking theme song...I still feel a chilling sensation when I replay it. It makes you feel as though in your mid 30s even if you are in your 50s. Indeed an impressive and most creative masterpiece of a show that they could not pick better characters....even Zulu character whom I really like a great deal.....sad that most if not all of them have left us but they are alive in our hearts mind and soul for the upliftingly innovative creative powers that inspire us to live....
Mine too, but I heard his good looks were all an illusion, Such as wearing elevator shoes, special tailored suits to enhance his physique and even a hairpiece to create that beutiful hair.......
My favorite Hawaii 5-0 actor is Al Harrington who played Ben. He took Zulu spot. I took a picture with him when I was a kid at a luau (still have the picture). He had just started on Hawaii 5-0 and is the only surviving cast member. Had a guest appearance on the new Hawaii 5-0. He was the first celebrity I met.
Jack Lord was definitely my favorite, although I'm a little disappointed that he seemed to be a control freak. I would have to say I really did love Dan-O, James McArthur. My father met once & said that he was very nice. After all his mother was the great Helen Hayes.

I don't blame him for passing away because the reboot was awful.
I heard he was to play the governor. I don't think he would have made a good governor, and so maybe it was best that he didn't get to do so.
Jack Lord was my favorite character.
Jack lord was a class act cool, classy, and impeccable so different from the 2nd rate actors of today!..you will never be forgotten!
Big Jack Lord Fan. Steve Mcgarret will always be my favorite
What's your favorite memory of him, Linda?
Big Chicken was my favorite...played by the late great Gavin McLeod...he was nemesis to McGarrett
Thanks for watching, Harry!
damn i forgot all about big chicken
I love jack lord I was able to meet him once in Hawaii I can never see enough of him.
Glad to know that you're a fan who met Jack! How was he personally?
@@FactsVerse yes he was wonderfully gracious.
The actor who played chin ho was a real Honolulu police officer
I did not know that!
He was a real police officer. He retired, got bored, and took up acting. He contributed to the more realistic elements of the show. He was also said to have a really great sense of humor.
He was my favourite on the show although they were all good and the show has remained one of my all-time favourites.
I have a hard time watching the episode where his character is killed.
My fav: Jack Lord and James McArthur.
If you blinked real fast during the intro.. you’d get this psychedelic buzz by the end of the spinning police light 👮♀️.😏
Macgarrick was my favorite actor of Hawaian 5-0. The opening of the program has music that is catching .At my age of almost close to I 80 i can still hum it. thank you for this television show it was a great show in my opinion. TORONTO
My Favorite Actor on Hawaii-Five-0 is Jack Lord He was a Really Good Mac Garret R I. P Jack
Jack Lord was my favorite, but they whole cast was fabulous.
We absolutely agree! Thank you for your watching our video. What episode is the most memorable for you?
@@FactsVerse When the Mob put out a hit on McGarrett
That episode on the video beginning is "Cocoon", the pilot movie. I watch it often! The huge statue in the opening credits is The National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, or the Punch Bowl cemetery. There are some YT videos that show the face of the hula dancer who is on all the opening credits for the entire series.
Yes, that was the famous Punch Bowl Cemetery which also contains the Hawaiian settlement of native Hawaiians.
my favorite was Al Harrington, Jr....he was an amazing showman.....he just passed away recently....probably the last of the original case...
Thanks for watching!
That classic quotation...
"Bookem Danno"
Thanks for watching, Sunstar Burst!
Thanks for watching, Travis!
The Hawaiians on the new show were in subordinate roles as well.
Jack Lord made that show go. Some comments say he was demanding and
overbearing, but when you demand the best from people you usually get it,
and Lord could command respect from his cast members, and they would
deliver the type of performance that made the show great.
Without Jack Lord, that show likely would not have made it. I never watched
the new sequel series, but I doubt it could match the original.
I don't think he command respect, he demanded it. I think this show made his career and net worth. What happen to him after this show ended? People of wealth usually have huge egos, but for a so so actor to act this way, the network probably thought this show would fail without him.
My favourite Hawaii Five-O cast was Jack 'Bookem Danno' Lord! And its soundtrack is the best of the best!
I love Jack lord 's acting . His face expression was superb. How can we forget that beautiful music.
Jack Lord, hands down. First as Stoney Burke then McGarret.
It was my first television favourite in the year 1980, on Channel 33, Dubai. Jack Lord, my Hero. I used to wait for the clock to strike 8pm, to watch the action.🥰🥰🥰
Thanks for watching, Sarina!
Jack lord what is one of my favorites.
I was living in Hawaii when this was being filmed. Awesome to watch !
Thanks for watching, Geri!

Try & watch as many as I can... ✌️
Aloha (means with love), to all the cast members that gave us such a great show, but especially to the biggest star of all - Hawaii.
Jack Lord as Sreve McGarrett is the best!!!
Thanks for watching!
Perhaps one the best shows ever indeed....the selection of characters was perfect for the role they played....the most powerful classic theme song introduction is second to none......what can I say....the creator is most talented to grip billions of audiences till this very day of the 28th of December 2022!
We're happy to know that you love the show. Thank you for sharing your thoughts. If we may ask, which episode did you like the best?
I liked the entire cast! Good actors all of them! Chin and Kono were my favorites!
Thanks for watching!
Jack Lord was my favourite I loved his eyes
May they rest in peace god bless the surving family relatives neighbors and friends be comforted
JACK LORD WAS MY FAVORITE CHARACTER
I liked Jack so much, I named my son after him!
Mine too, but I heard his good looks were all an illusion, Such as wearing elevator shoes, special tailored suits to enhance his physique and even a hairpiece to create that beutiful hair.......
Jack lord and James McArthur , both very handsome and talented.
Everyone goes to Hawaii will remember Jack Lord.
Thanks for watching!
Jack Lord will always miss, RIP ❤️🙏❤️🙏
Thanks for watching, Julie!
Wow. They're all passed on. Great show. Rest in peace to the crew.
Thanks for watching, Jeffrey!
NO there's about TWO still alive the female actors
Jack lord he play in a Radeo when I was a kid I watch all the time .I love it
Music was amazing. So memorable. Guys so smart and handsome. XxX
Thanks for watching, Elinor!
Certainly one of the best shows I have seen straightup no bs cold war between USA and China
He was not a control freak. He had a co-producer role, so was involved in a lot of aspects of the show, but that didn't mean he controlled everything.
Jack lord was my favorite person in the movie.
Jack lord was my favorite actor on Hawaii five O
