    1. Treat time as a commodity
    2. Don't invest your time preparing for life. Live right now, don't delay happiness, it's now.
    3. Life life for your own self
    4. Practice premeditato malorum Short term gratification vs long term commitments. Design around distractions.
    5. Make long term rewards immediate - putting things off is biggest waste of life.
    6. Make the most of your free time.
    7. Spend time reflecting on your past.
    8. Stop wasting time of life's trivialities.
    9. Invest your time making new memories. Memory is more enduring than grief.
    10. Invest time in your philosophies. So that we can live wide rather than long.

    true story. my stepfather retired in october after working thirty years saving up for retirement. He often worked overtime, sixty plus hour weeks saving up. In january, he was diagnosed with stage 3 lung cancer. He died on April 6th, four months later. His only memories were not of time spent with his family but time spent at work.

      My father didn't even make it to retirement... He spent his life working ever since he was a kid, and he took upon himself the obligation to have a lot of his family members depend on him like his brothers, cousins etc... At 56 he was diagnosed with 4 stage cancer and at first he wanted to postpone the surgery because of work.
      The only time he spent at home with us is the time he was sick... he passed 6 months ago. 💔

    This also goes along with my theory of why time seems to fly by from your 20's onward. As kids, we go to school and every hour we're in a new class learning new things and having all sorts of new experiences. In your 20's, it begins the rut to where your days aren't much different from the day before. Sure different things come up at work but you're applying the same skills, going to the same place, seeing the same people and next thing you know one decade of your life is as distinguishable as when you were 16 vs 15 years old. Crazy.

    • @ryang.7765
      @ryang.7765 4 ปีที่แล้ว +41

      This is correct. Routine is what gives us the illusion of time passing fast for the same reason you sometimes “zone out” while driving on the same road you take everyday. You’re on autopilot. When you make new experiences for yourself, you are forced to be present. You can’t be on autopilot.

But, it really confuses me when it says "don't work endless hours only to be happy after retirement", and then says "don't waste your time talking and having a drink with your coworker. Spend that time working on what you really want to do". I feel like being chocked by expectations and endless goals. I work in a job that people says "so good you work with what you love". I got this job because I did exactly what this video says (spend every spare minutes studying and preparing to get this job I wanted). But may I say, Job is a Job. It still eat my life up. I much rather spend my free time drinking with coworker to get to know them as a person. Cuz I think I'd remember time spend with people whom I met than my 'success' on my death bed. Yeah, I definitely agree. We need water and it is extremely important. However, too much and you will drown and too little you will die of dehydration. I think literally almost everything has a place of balance in the world depending on its impact. My theory on something like drugs goes like this: If you could properly balance drug use for enjoyment, they'd be fine. The problem is drugs are very easily abused and used to the extreme. If you find you cannot balance drug use (which most people cannot), then you should pick the better of the two extremes and refrain from drug use altogether.

    No matter what we do in life in the end we will have regrets. If we played too much we will wish we would have worked more, if we worked too much we will wish we would have played more. I should have done this, I should not have done that. When it's all said and done in the end none of it's going to matter. Videos like this don't change anything for the better, they just make everything seem worse than it really is. The key is to not take life so seriously, just live.

While our recovery program completely agrees with most of this logic I think the writer went off track with that point. The immense amount of time I spent socializing, even if it included alcohol, were some of the best times in my life. As is the time I spend consuming great art on streaming services including TH-cam AND some video games. I do not regret the majority of the decades I spent in bars. I just regret overdoing it. • @barabaramoo
    @barabaramoo 5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    Some good advice here, but lacking emphasis on a huge important point. For anybody listening, there's nothing more important than spending time with your loved ones and filling your life with lots of charity, friends and love. You could read a thousand books, have the best skills, be the fittest person and spend your time "wisely" by being super focused, but it feels very sterile and frankly, kinda ego-stroking. If you spend your life truly caring for people, and them caring for you, that's time well spent. Even if it's just laughing at a funny joke, playing games and enjoying each other's company, or "wasting" time, if you spend it building relationships with people, it will never be a waste.

    • @gkgorillakong
      @gkgorillakong 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's pretty obvious that everyone who makes more free-time and values it will do what they want, including spending time with loved ones or doing things that are meaningful...this isn't ego-stroking, it's inspirational. Are you sure you're not just projecting?

    •  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Now if only I could find people who actually care about more than themselves. I constantly adapt myself to the needs of others, but when I need something it just never happens.
      I always let people pass me first, if it happens the other way around it's 90% certain that it's accidental.
      I don't like to break rules. I used to when I thought a rule was stupid.
      I want everyone to get along.
      Yet... I meet apathy, anger and selfishness on a daily basis.

    • @barabaramoo
      @barabaramoo 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@gkgorillakong You could say I AM projecting. Sure, you can interpret it that way. My message is not for you, actually. It's for people who are already currently maintaining this lifestyle and still feel like there's something missing.
      I spend all my time on work and "making something of myself". I have a strict schedule. I have a small business that I love. I read constantly and exercise daily. I don't "waste" time. I don't watch dumb movies, play games or watch television, not if I can help it. I subscribe to this thinking 100%.
      But sometimes I wonder, what is all this for? What's all this money for? They always just go to medical bills. What's this achievement for? To scratch an itch which is my ego. Oh yeah, I also have anxiety, stress, high amounts of acid, insomnia and a host of other medical issues.
      I think about my death bed and feel sad knowing some people will attend but will not miss me. My friends like me okay. We talk online often. But whenever they invite me out, I am always busy. I don't think I'm really "close" to anyone.
      You say meaning and value is obvious, but it really isn't. A few decades ago, I told myself I was going to make something of my life. I was going to do things right. I was not going to waste time like stupid people. But then I forgot about the importance of my loved ones and took them for granted. Now, I have to fight that feeling of guilt every time I spend time with people. I try to make time for my loved ones now (little by little), but I always get this voice at the back of my head telling me to get back to work. I start feeling anxiety when somebody takes too much of my time. It's because I'm so used to working. I have to mindfully schedule "relationship-building" activities and commit to it. So no, actually, this kind of thing isn't too effing obvious. It takes clarity and wisdom to realize the importance of having treasured people in your life. It takes persistence and effort to keep them around too.

    • @barabaramoo
      @barabaramoo 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @ I feel for you, but I think you have to cultivate respect first before you can ask for love and care. I would suggest making something of yourself first, building your self esteem, do something you are proud of and commit to it. When you have that weapon in your arsenal, people will hesitate to walk all over you. My advise is to build your self-esteem by learning a skill. Get really good at it. And then look for ONE person, (or a few, if you are lucky), who really cares for you. At least just ONE person. That person is your home base. Treasure that person and that skill. It will get you started. Then, slowly, gain more respect by being part of a community. Good luck, my friend.

    Although I greatly respect Seneca, I see many people so concerned about time that in their rush to save it they miss their own life's experience.
    For instance, a half hour 'wasted' in meditation is something that very few people are willingly to do.
    Saving time in order to be efficient in making more money is not to be admired if the end result may be missing the opportunity to honor wisdom, right action or empathy.
    The wise person recognizes the importance of each moment, not seeing it as something that must be possessed or accounted for as a potential 'loss'. We should leave that obsession for those who only see others as 'winners' or ' losers'.
    If we truly value our time in this life then we must be willing slow down enough to participate in every moment, not as something to save, take advantage of, or dominate.
    Should we not be willing to slow down enough to read and absorb the wisdom of the philosophers and determine what ideas WE agree with ? Don't worry. If we take time to observe we will all get to our end anyway.
    Wisdom does not arrive by being in a rush or plotting every moment.

    Regarding point 2: I think the river is a perfect analogy. It would be easy to assume we’re saying be active for every second. But actually we need to take time for rest too. I think the analogy shows potential weakness in that the person in the desert who finds the stream should NOT drink as much as they possibly can - this might make them throw up. Instead they should be wise about using the water and try to store it in available containers for the future if it runs out. In the same way, I think we should take mindful pauses and rests to rejuvenate ourselves.
