they need to make more films like this, of this standard

Pretty decent technical details for 1987.

A very simple but incredibly inefficient gun type device. I think they should've had it turned upside down. Reason being you don't want the slug falling into the ball because then you get a criticality reaction. The C4 fires the slug in so fast and the polonium releases a blizzard of neutrons that jump starts everything that you get the full chain reaction instead of a partial.
There is one HUGE problem with the whole idea of setting off a nuke and blaming it on the US. The device is NOT on the air base, its like a mile or two away. A 1-2kt explosion? The base itself won't get much damage. How do you explain that? The radioactive dust also contains bit of the nuclear material and it can be analyzed and its able to say just how it was refined and maybe where.

The point was to create a public backlash that would make continued presence of US air bases on British or European soil politically untenable.
The minutiae of precise bomb locations or isotope ratios wouldn't have mattered. Anti-nuclear groups and Soviet-backed fifth column agencies would have disputed the findings and kept the public enraged.

Btw housing was for base staff and directly next to the base, not "1-2 miles" away.

@retsuzchannel In the novel its explained that they only want a 1 kiloton explosion. Oh well I guess Mr Forsyth didn't want anyone building one since he explained all the components and assembly instructions in the book.

Handling plutonium with bare hands? I think not.....

It's a gun type weapon, therefor it'll likely be uranium. Can be handled barehandedly if you're desperate or fanatical enough.

I thought that and so asked a friend who is literally a nuclear scientist involved in waste storage of radioactive material. Apparently although both components are fissile material they have a long half life and mostly give off alpha particles so they will not give the handler a harmful radioactive dose unless the components become very close. Furthermore the materials themselves are no more toxic to the bare skin than lead. so the handler would need to ingest material in order to suffer harm.
Colour me surprised - I imagined their underpants would glow in the dark from simply being in the same house as the material.

Many, many flaws in just one scene. I mean first of all those assembled two halfs of the container aren't the ones they've put on the table, and than she drops the rod into ball trough the tube, right where it should reach only after the explosion of plastic explosive. Than, another flaw, plastic explosive isn't a propellant like gunpowder, so it would shread the tube around itself, and although it would push rod if it wasn't already dropped down, it would also damage it, possibly even causing it to get stuck. The whole assembly, should have been placed upside down to meet the plain logic. So many people on the movie set, and no one to say "this will look bad, viewers will notice..."

She didn't drop the rod into the core. It's obviously resting on a shear pin on other retainer.

No... The initiator, formed by polonium and lithium, is bombarded by a blizzard of neutrons at the moment of criticality (the mass, the uranium rod, is sent through by a plastic explosive). That's when things begin to get interesting ;)

this movie scares me for one reason. Done with the right people- it could happen. Violating the
4th protocol and going beyond the nuclear treaty- would be a receipe for WW3. No matter how
tempting a target- it should never be done. Forsyth was right.

2 years old "question" but I answer still. Haunting movie scene and in my opinion well made. As said, Pierce is great there of course and also Joanna. The thing here I think or at least is, how the whole "thing" is made with the music being there. Just great. Would it work, no.
      Cheers...

If the components were real then the answer is yes. It’s a gun type detonation uranium fission bomb.

Gun type devices are very inefficient but a simple design. It would work.
