Have you ever thought about hiking the Wonderland Trail around Mount Rainier? If so, would you hike it all the way thru or would you do a section of it? If section hiking, which section would you want to hike?
I was in awe of the scenery the entire time we were out there. Clarkia has the voice of an angel...thankfully I didn’t have to scare anyone on this trip with my singing. 😂
Haven't been on the WT since 1994...miss it. Spectacular and unique sights that are comparable to no others. Lots of fun...I will visit again before I can't!
You should definitely get back out there whenever you can. I have fallen in love with Mount Rainier and am making a point to spend more time there each summer, whenever I can. PS: I have another special trip planned at Mount Rainier this summer. Stay tuned!

@@goodoz9942 Thank you for the great trip suggestion! I was lucky enough to secure my dream trip of a complete rotation around Mount Rainier along the Wonderland Trail this summer for 10 days. Summerland and Indian Camp are sites I plan on staying at along the way!!
Thank goodness for meeting the runner on trail that morning. His “you’ll be fine” comment had us laughing and in good spirits all the way back to Sunrise. Mount Rainier is quite the stunner. I can’t wait to go back!!❤️
I put about 100 miles on this trail split in 3 back to back years (33 miles each year, 11 miles a day, 3 day trips) in the late 90's when I was in my mid teens with a crazy heavy old school Jansport hiking pack with all my gear for days.. all the Rangers I ran across thought we were crazy.
Absolutely Amazing! Thank you for sharing. As a father of 2 young daughters, all I can hope for is they find friends to share epic journeys just like this. 🤟

Jimmy Fassbinder Are you talking about the Wonderland Trail or the PCT? I’m pretty sure Stevens Pass to Bishop is along the PCT. Both are incredible trails to hike!! 😀
This is the trip where we met U-Haul originally. He was hiking in the opposite direction. He shows up in my Sheep Lake and Sourdough Gap via Chinook Pass on the PCT video. That was our first day hike together. Been friends ever since!
Spectacular!! amazing views! Thank you so much for bringing us all along on this hike - almost like being there! Love your commentary, enthusiasm and the music! Keep on Truckin! A friend of Phat-D/now U-Haul, lol! ✌️❤️🙏
Thanks for watching! Berkeley Park still had a fair amount of snow when we rolled through. Once we got up to Grand Park, it was full on Sound of Music style! Saw your Wonderland video and loved it! I can’t wait to do the whole trail, all 93 miles. 🤞 for a permit in 2021.
I did a little of it, I was sick when I started and my cold just got worse. Had to bail because I got drenched after a few days - constant rain. It was an August, and the week before was great weather. I had a tarp tent without a floor and it wasn't the greatest for those conditions. When I left the trail, I had to traverse a big mudslide in one of the trailhead parking lots. One day I'll go back and hike it...
Being sick on trail SUCKS!!! And to get drenched on top of that, what a sufferfest. That's the thing about these mountains. One day you have nice weather and then the next day, you could be caught in a crazy storm. I found myself bringing a few pieces of gear on this trip I wouldn't normally bring for a backpacking trip in July - microspikes, an emergency tarp to use for lining my tent in the event I had to camp on snow (which I did), extra layers for sleeping in and hiking boots vs the trail runners I normally wear on trail. I was VERY happy bringing these additional items. Totally worth the extra weight to be a little extra comfortable out there. You definitely have to go back and hike it again. I want to hike it again too. Hopefully next time there will be more sun so I can get more views of the mountain. We saw the mountain twice the whole time we were out there because there was so much fog.
Either or, im so sick of pretending like i like living in Illinois. Getting rid of all the materialistic items that defines my personality as i write this. SOBO or bust
@@TheHungryHiker I'm familiar with almost everything from Stevens pass to Bishop.. whatever I do it's going to be impulsive. I'm disconnecting myself from everything and everyone. I won't be running from anything this time

Your video helped convince me this would be an awesome route. Early Access Lottery is this coming Monday 2/21... fingers crossed!

Thank you so much for this. Glad you enjoyed my video. I had a lot of fun putting this one together and reliving all of my memories from the trip. You should definitely get out there for this hike. One option is to enter part of the Northern Loop via Lake Eleanor, another beautiful destination. So many choices!! Good luck!
That was THE BEST quote were heard on the entire trip. It came from this adorable ultra-marathon runner we met on trail on our last day. We were asking him about Skyscraper Pass, something we had been fearing over the duration of the trip. As soon as he said, "You'll be fine!" that became our official motto for when things got hairy.I was I could find him and thank him for the countless laughs we've had about that since.

Hi!! Thank you for sharing your awesome trip!! Some questions: 1. Are microspikes on "regular" hiking boots enough to trudge through the snow you encountered safely? 2. How neccessary do you feel poles are for the trail? I'm a beginner hiker and have never done overnights and have never owned poles 3. How do you apply for a permit that is mixed/if you're doing the northern trail + part of the wonderland trail like you did? 4. What kind of GPS/navigation did you use?? Thanks!!
Here are the answers to your questions: 1. Yes, microspikes over our hiking boots was plenty enough traction device for us to navigate through the snowy parts on the Northern Loop during our trip. 2. I feel for me, trekking poles are absolutely necessary for me for any hike. I used to never hike with trekking poles until I started thru-hiking. Now I can't hike without them. They help with balance and are another point of contact with the ground helping to keep me more stable in less than desirable conditions and also help distribute the weight of my pack better. They also help take off some of the impact from off my knees and joints. I highly recommend using them. 3. I didn't apply for the permit. My friend whom I joined this trip with did. The Northern Loop is a portion just off The Wonderland Trail and I'm sure is easy to include on your permit application. Just make sure to select the campsites off of the Northern Loop if that's the route you want to go. Check my video description for a list of campsites we stayed at on this trip. 4. I used my Garmin inReach for navigation. We also used AllTrails, Gaia and Guthook. Between all of those, we were able to stay close to the trail and stayed found during our entire trip. Hope this helps!
We got on trail from Sunrise, headed north to the Northern Loop and then got back off at Sunrise. We didn’t go anywhere near Panhandle Gap so I don’t have a trail report for you. Sorry!
denhash Yup! It’s quite beautiful and much less busy than staying on the Wonderland Trail. We spent Days 1 and 2 on the Northern Loop and then Days 3 and 4 back on the Wonderland Trail.
Great video! I’m hiking it next month and am really looking forward to it. Looks like I will need to bring microspikes? Need to do some research on how much snow is left now...
Depends on where you start. We started at Sunrise on 4th of July weekend and there was a ton of snow. When we went out there this last weekend from Sunrise to Burroughs Mountain, most of not all of the snow had melted. I’m thinking you probably won’t need Microspikes for your hike. Not in September at least. Good luck and have fun!
The Hungry Hiker Thanks for the quick response! I’m doing the full loop from Sunrise going counter clockwise - 6 days/5 nights so I’m trying to fastpack it with as little weight as possible - hence the TH-cam research. Thanks for the tip! BTW - love the channel and just subscribed! Will be checking out your other WA hikes.
Love it! I definitely packed more gear in July than I would’ve for a hike in August. But I found I needed all the extra gear I packed - microspikes, clothing layers, emergency tarp, etc. which reminds me, I still need to shoot a video on all the gear I brought with me on my Wonderland Trail hike.
I use an Osprey Eja 48 and I remove the brain (the pack lid on top). This is what has worked for me and I've loved using on all of my recent backpacking trips. I actually wasn’t the one who applied for the permit for this trip. I was invited. My friend had applied for the permit to hike the Northern Loop during the lottery at the beginning of this year and got it. I think with the combination of going earlier in the season (we were out there the first weekend Sunrise was open for this year) and hiking Northern Loop, the odds were good for my friend winning the lottery. I’m sure it would’ve been a different story had it been later on in the season and for the whole Wonderland Trail. If you’re looking for day-of permits, I believe everything is being done online now for the rest of the year due to COVID. Hope this helps! 😀
