The original Japanese title is "葬送(Sousou no Frieren)." 葬送(Sousou)" means a funeral or seeing off the dead. Who will Frieren, who has a longer lifespan than humans, meet and who will she see off? This is that kind of anime. Journey's End. is the subtitle of the first episode.
I like the mirrored moment with first episode, when Fern wants to stop searching for the flower and Frieren want to search more, and when this happens, Frieren just accept that the ring is lost, and don't wanna make others search for it, and Fern is the one who say "We don't leave here until we find it".
Himmel knew that Frieren would not understand his feelings given her race and her particular personality, so he never outright proclaimed his love for her. And on the off-chance that she did understand, he knew it would only cause her pain when he died. It must've killed him to keep it all bottled up, but he never showed it. Frieren never understood the meaning behind every little (or in this episode, big) affectionate action Himmel took towards her until he was gone, so she never got a chance to reciprocate. It was the ultimate love that could never be. Even should they meet at Aureole, it will only be temporary. It must be bittersweet whenever Frieren sees a statue of Himmel because it reminds her that she was loved but she cannot love him back. In her own way though, I think she is learning channel her love towards her new companions to make up for it.
Heiter is really relatable when he says he's just pretending to be an ideal grownup. a lot of us really are just improvising through life, and some others won't admit to improvising through life. And then to finish us off, he insists that children need praise and support, when I know too many of us got hardness, cruelty or indifference.
Fern and Stark are only 18. And they were both orphans raised by heroes in the woods. They really just don't know how to interact with each other very well. Especially since they have very different personalities. Fern is very reserved and conservative while Stark is very outgoing even though he suffers from imposter syndrome. He's slowly developing more self confidence but it takes time. This story takes place over a long time so they both have lots of room to develop individually and explore their feelings for each other.
Every small nuance she shows was something she picked up from others, she just didn't see the usefulness of it before. After Frieren and Heiter's conversation about praising him, she adopted the headpat as a form of praise. It's like picking up a habit from someone else, not because you enjoy the habit, but as a form of remembering them through their habit.
Himmel's love is a kind of love that reflects himself the most which is kindness and selflessness. He loved Frieren but he didn't care if Frieren loved him, he just wanted to show Frieren that this is “love” Frieren. 😭😭
I mean that's most likely part of why the dragon died. Stark used that momentum from otherwise fatal fall to harness it in a downward blow. Like even a coin tossed from an airplane would definitely kill someone on the ground.
@@soulscyther666 Yeah, but I've always thought that Stark most likely could've just slammed the ground or something to survive if he were ever to actually jump down from the sky to survive. I do realize that the dragon's mass or something probably blunted Stark's momentum when he slammed it down, but I just enjoy the idea that Stark could actually pull it off with at least minimum fall damage like a sick superhero landing.
Oh no the cry counter: Devi 9/28😭😭😢😭😭🙂😭😀😀😀😀😢😢😭 Jackie 0/28😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀 I'm glad that after so many shounens, Devi finally has the opportunity to watch an anime with real shojo elements😉 How many times have you cried so far? My cry counter:😭😭😀😀😀😀😭😀😀😀😀😀😀😢
Frieren stared at the watch tower in the beginning of the episode because it’s the same one in the ‘proposal’ scene in the background, standing between her and Himmel. ‘Only time kept them apart.’
I felt like it was obvious, from the first episode, how Himmel felt and how oblivious Frieren was ;D But, then again, unrequited love is a feature of my life.
I agree that the clocktower symbolizes that they are separated by time, but I also think it is pointing out that their love is eternal and transcends time. They are each loving the other person from an entirely separate time period, but even though they have almost a century and Himmel's death standing between them, the power of that love is breaking through the divide of time and their isolation from each other. Himmel clearly knew back then that Frieren wasn't capable of reciprocating his feelings, but he still left her with memories of all the gestures he made and ways he showed her that he cared because I think he realized there was a chance she would realize she loved him after he was gone. Both Heiter and Eisen realized she made a mistake right from the start, and Flamme knew she would make that mistake too. The whole "we're not just fairy tales" and "so you won't have to be alone" stuff just shows that Himmel understood what Frieren was going to experience after all of them were gone and he found a way to love her and be a presence in her life despite not being there for her physically. I'm convinced with the statues, the flower spell and blue flower from his village episode (and her continuing to collect spells because he once liked a spell she knew), and now this ring - all of these things and more point to the fact that he 100% left breadcrumbs throughout their journey so she could explore and develop her capacity to love when/if she ever realized that she loved him and he loved her back. He loved her so much that he was willing to do it from beyond the grave, from so afar, knowing she couldn't return his feelings within his lifetime. Himmel was him. P.S. The lotus flower bud (which of course is said to symbolize eternal love in this episode) hasn't fully bloomed yet on the ring, but it's in full bloom on the bracelet. This can represent that Himmel implicitly understood it was an eternal love, but also recognized it was not yet ready to bloom. It also very much implies that though Stark and Fern are still too young to express it or even realize it about themselves, they are fully in love with each other. Sein's little sideways smirk and knowing grunt at 13:00 says it all ♥♥♥
I really loved this episode, I think it might be one of my favorites episodes from all time. I felt really the same as you with Heiter's part. I loved your reaction ♥
Its a difference between the Bracelet and the Ring. The Bracelet has a open wide Lotus that beginn to grow. The Ring has only a bud that will never grow but Himmel knows exactly the meaning behind this.. the only thing between Frieren and Himmel was just time.. "Im used to losing things" probably saddest sentence in the whole show.
One thing about Fern's Bracelet and Frieren's ring. Fern's bracelet is blossomed, which means that her love will or has blossomed into reality where Frieren's ring is just a lotus bud, which means the love was never meant to come to fruition, despite being one that would last forever.
Fern doesn't know how to handle Stark since he's the only one of her age that she knows so she's harsh with him. She was only mad about the lack of Stark's present to her and didn't care as much about the other's.
The one thing she loves the most after magic, is sleeping, and she gave that up in order to look for the ring every night , that´s says how important the ring is to her
I love how at this episode the story kind of flips over into a new meaning. I have always believed that Frieren picking the ring symbolized that Frieren did bear feelings for Himmel but since she's an elf and she lacks "romantic instincts", she never realized it because she never understood relationships. But now that she is around Stark and Fern whose relationship is growing as time goes by, Frieren's understood relationships (which correlates to her goal to understand humans) which is why when she remembered this moment, it dawned to her what Himmel ACTUALLY meant.
And think about this, both Heiter and Eisen both adopted/trained someone that could travel with Frieren, and then sent her on an adventure to see and speak to Himmel in heaven. They knew.
Himmel was such a real one hahah. I think he was somewhat content with his one sided gestures of his love. Frieren has mentioned before that elves have very little instinct for love or procreation, so we can assume he knew this as well, and simply understood that she would never return his feelings. As you've mentioned in the reaction, he never married, even after Frieren left and never visited for 50 years....
Seems if Jackie watches relatable scenes which not really connected him to fantasy thing, he feels more it. Devi make me cry with her on a part I didn't cry before, I always felt just like Heiter said, so for me it is just a fun fact, still I couldn't hold my tears
1:46~ The two are laughing in this scene. In Japan, we laugh at situations like this. That is Japanese culture. However, this kind of culture does not exist outside of Japan. People other than Japanese don't laugh That's what I learned in another video. But the video owner is laughing. Does that mean that the two of them understand the Japanese sense? In any case, as a Japanese person, I'm really happy that you laughed at this scene.
why cant you see that theyre an item?! the girls here are just an awkward creatures that they cant speak what they want to.. fern and stark are adorable couple if you ask me.. the author has been hinting it since stark's introduction where they give them some alone moments from time to time, and every time they're alone they understand each other i actually like developing romance like this one rather than the instant romance like most anime does nowadays where "ah, the mc shows me kindness so i have to fall inlove with him" kinda thing
TBH, Stark is only ever shown to be made miserable by being around Fern, so I can understand why you don't really see them being together. Stark deserves someone who will love and care about him, and who won't constantly berate, ridicule, and even physically hit him whenever she's feeling a little annoyed.

This episode title
is not
privilege of the “young”
but
privilege of the “nice guy”
Frieren: I didn’t notice any signs.
The signs
😂
What’s really sad is when she says she’s use to losing things she also means the people she loved.
its rly heartbreaking for this kind of show, this episode get me every time
Considering the number of Tomes from Flamme that she outlasted, she probably prefers to not wear the ring so it wont wear and tear as fast.
I like the mirrored moment with first episode, when Fern wants to stop searching for the flower and Frieren want to search more, and when this happens, Frieren just accept that the ring is lost, and don't wanna make others search for it, and Fern is the one who say "We don't leave here until we find it".

Your reaction to the heiter scene was so touching. It's so true and I loved your thoughts and feelings about it. Thank you so much.
"There's no way I'll survive that!" Stark, buddy, you literally slammed a dragon down when you got flung up.
I mean that's most likely part of why the dragon died. Stark used that momentum from otherwise fatal fall to harness it in a downward blow. Like even a coin tossed from an airplane would definitely kill someone on the ground.

That was an amazing reaction and discussion! Especially the part about Heiter.
the clock tower in the middle meaning only time can stand in between them ... or something like that

Himmel never marry bcz he only have frieren jn his heart. He never confess bcz frieren didn’t understand the concept of love at that time.
I love this episode because as you mentioned in the discussion, is so deep so profound

I saw them getting emotional with the Frieren Heiter talk... I was like, ohhh, sh*t, what're we gonna see later.......
"what?"
(But Deep inside)
"Eh!?"
"Nani?"
"why I'm crying btw?"
So sad now knowing Himmel loved and Waited for her for 50 years just too see her one last time.
“that’s not the only one himmel gave to me”
oh the poses lmao
Guys look, the watch tower was there to remind us , time the only thing that separates frieren and himmel
"Are you alright? " NOOO! IM NOT!! HAHAHAHA
This broke *everyone* when the Manga chapter first came out.
Freiren is literally a love story told in reverse.
Great reaction as always. The purple hair looks great, too. :)

Himmel proposed to her but she didn't know it at that time and she's just realizing what it meant now.
Now watch episode 1 again without crying 😢
Here come the tears!!!
This is so wholesome
Finally❤ I waited for these reaction
Comfyyy✨ nice outfits
frieren probably like "oh is this how humans give a ring." lols cold so cold.
HIMmel the goat
Storytelling Peeaakkkk....

I hate this anime so much even though it’s my favorite anime and it makes me feel so much and also cause I’ve watched like 3 times. Just terrible 😂
10:37 fight? What do you mean. Frieren doesn’t fight. She slays.
