This kind of axe is very beautiful. People used it a lot in the past to make round columns and to make rowing boat from wood.
It can't be thrown away because it is very dangerous and difficult to throw.

Very nice job Roseth and striker. Interesting concept for a tool. With the cross handle attached, you have a felling axe and with it removed you have a pole axe for removing the bark from the log and fine trimming of the finished column. 👍😁 Well done.

You can make a hot blueing solution out of potassium nitrate (fertilizer) and lye (sodium hydroxide). You can probably buy lye, but you could also make it by dissolving fats in your ash. It would be nice to see some kind of preservative added to these carbon steel blades, because even with oil, they are rusting after some time. Seeing the chisel you made in a previous episode made me think of this comment.

The main guy"s hammer. ) The Striker sets the rhythm and the Main Guy syncopates
Actually the striker is following the blacksmith's lead. The Smith,with the smaller hammer is directing every strike. Where he hits,the striker hits. It's all under the Smith's control. Striker is just a flesh trip hammer!

Very interesting, I assume "the tail" is designed as a stabilizer.
Quick googling i found the origin of this axe, it's the Bunong traditional Axe.
Either that or as a prybar for splitting. But if that is the case it seems weird that he'd leave the side of the axe eye open so the handle could potentially come out.

Kinda looks like it absorbs the vibration as well, so the hands don't feel it as much
For me, this tail is only for nothing.. All the other cultures whithout this thing made all whithout it. My fear is only, to lost an eye with is ;-)
@@aaronward4319 Ignoring the extra "handle" thing, it looks like a less secure way to haft the axe head. At first I thought maybe the thick handle went around the axe head and the thin "handle"(?) to hold them together but that doesn't appear to be the case. I feel like I must be missing something. In another video he appeared to make a hammer with a traditional hafting but never bothered with a wedge to secure it. I figure that maybe the tropics high humidity corrodes the head into place or something?
it is the way thai, mon, khmer ect poeple made their axes in history.. the tail gives balance and stops the axe glancing or bouncing much... stoneage axes form papua new guinea have similar sort of counterweight tails but of a much smaller size..
OK. This hands-down the STRANGEST and most OVER ENGINEERED hand tool I've ever seen. I Love it! Can anyone tell me why there needs to be that long extension off the heel of the axe? Other than mass..it looks cumbersome.

I don't know the local name, but if this was found in an archeological dig, it would be called a 'palstave axe' Lots of bronze examples. They were more commonly hafted using a crooked handle made from a branch fork, but I like this method better.

This guy is amazing but the material is never checked for Rc hardness or tensile strength so he depends on what was made by the orginal material manufacture. Even after tempering you don't know what hardness he acheived is or how brittle the material is but he makes some of the best projects out of what is usually junk metal. I would by his stuff any time in Cambodia when I am there.

The tail works like an arrow. The tip alone won't do much and sideways, there is very little weight. Swinging the axe like normal, the tail's inertia gives the head penetration, just like an arrow, without added weight.
