    1) My boy sheds mildly throughout the year and it's pretty consistent with any short - medium haired cat, but he does blow out his undercoat twice a year (late Autumn & early Spring) and this is "tumbleweed season" my hallways look like a western shootout's about to go down and they do look ridiculous with some patches long, some short - even with brushing they will look scruffy for a couple of weeks.
    2) All animals have their potential health problems. With purebreds it tends to be more obvious, but with mixed breeds it can sneak in to the gene pool from anywhere and lay undetected. A purebred is no more prone to "nasty" genetic conditions than a mixed breed. But yes, absolutely go for a good breeder who has a parental lineage they can back up to eliminate as much of the risk as possible. I will say that this breed is very sensitive to food, it needs a high protein and low carb diet and also one that's high quality (fresh meats, fish etc. if possible - but certainly a high quality commercial wet food / dry food) they are inclined to get balding spots and stomach upsets very easily if given the wrong sort of diet.
    3) Not true. They're exceptional learners because of their intelligence, they're biddable, they like to learn and be mentally stimulated; they're willful but also incredibly loving and loyal to their owners, they're a bit dog like and like to learn / please. If the cat has enough affection for the owner then the owner will not need to show them / instruct them more than a couple of times to get results. For biting, chewing, scratching then toys and stimulation works well, plus a bottom of diluted lemon water or lavender oil for when "no" must really mean "no" like trying to chew on electric cables or scratching up carpet (hint: spray / rub the item or location in the solution, not the cat!)
For going out and them trying to follow, distract with food, this breed is -very- food obsessed and notoriously bad about begging; also a good idea to distract with their own food if you are also trying to eat. Note that the food / treats make for an exceptional motivator if you do want to train and this is a breed that can learn things like walking on a leash, commands, tricks etc. they naturally take to it.
    4) True - they are very socially orientated, they like other animals or other people and easily get anxious or destructive without.
    5) Also true, baring in mind the above. They love cuddles and snuggling & fuss, they love being talked to and having attention, they love to curl up near you. But when they ask for it. This breed is exceptionally tolerant and mild mannered, but if it doesn't want to be around you at a particular moment then it won't be. You can encourage an interaction by inviting them to it, but this isn't a "sit on your lap for hours" kind of cat.
    6) Very true, they want and need a lot of stimulation physical and mental. They also tend to live on a 'buzz' of energy, they eat a little, literally burn it off and eat again. They're not a cat that wants big meals at set times, they like little and often. They do best with an outside space if possible but if not, then they certainly need a lot of activities to keep them occupied (like a cat wheel if possible!)
NB* if you have an outdoor Somali, truly an outdoor one then you will probably get a lot of "presents" this breed is exceptional at ambush hunting and very fixated with prey. Also, if you have small pets or birds, don't get this cat, or else keep them completely apart; it will obsessively hunt them until it gets them.
7)Also true and they will 100% let you know that they're bored and want something - ankle tackles are very common.

Frankly, I disagree with all seven points. I've had 2 and they are very loyal cats. You can easily break their spirit if you don't take the time to bond with them. They thrive on love and friendship and will teach you everything you can know about all felines, but only if you bond. Don't get one and break their heart by being too aloof.

  • @jasperwashere
    @jasperwashere ปีที่แล้ว +17

...tbh none of these are valid points.
    1. "they shed." most animals shed my g, it's natural.
    2. "blindness." why exactly is this a problem??? also you say yourself that it's rare
    3. "you need to train them." yeah thank you Captain Obvious every animal needs training
    4. "they enjoy a companion." i don't see how this is a problem??? that's the reason you're getting a cat in the first place
    5. "they can be independent at times." you mean like most cats????????? no way!!!!!!!!!!!!
    6. "they're active." again, much like most other cats
    7. "they get bored easily." this is probably the only half-valid point on here. just... supply them entertainment? not that hard tbh

"blindness." why exactly is this a problem??? - any health issue is a problem. blind or/and deaf animals are a problem especially if they became blind or deaf very young. No one wants deaf or blind animals if they can avoid it, its simply additional problems for you and vet expenses

I love Somali Cats, and I will probably never look at another breed, but this video seems quite unfair. All cats (dogs, pets etc) shed. If anything i found that at least their hair dont float like say a ragdol's. being active + get bored - basically the same thing yet if you get a some toys cat stands etc they will be happy. Mine has loved being lazy in the sun, like 90% of the cats out there and being up on a perch as well, like most cats... and yes they might not be lap cats, though as most cats have that independent streak regardless of breed, these are INCREDIBLY affectionate. in 13 yrs I had mine, she always slept next to me.. spooning in winter and next to me in summer - they bond with their owner (even more so to a main carer) and great amount of head bunt/boops,tail swooshing around you, and napping on/around you regardless of how "active" lifestyle you/ they have. we were comfortably watching movie after movie cuddling on the couch when its a rainy day . Oh... and ALL cats (and dogs) must be trained where their litter /toilets are, and where food and water is. is like trying to find something wrong with a breed just for the sake of it. As for the health.. sure there might be a predisposition for the eye sight, sure - as so many pets out there do, like saying never get yourself a dog because of hip dysplasia.. it makes more sense to say "acquire a cat(any pet) from a conscious breeder" - so far all the breeders of Somali cats aren't backyard breeders and have been very conscious of keeping the breed/ genes healthy, unlike so many other mainstream breeds.
