Vinyl/burlap isn't necessary for the backrest. The purpose of the added layer of material is to help spread the force/weight of a person out over the springs to help prevent foam break-down under that weight. Just like trying to lift a piece of furniture with a sharp ledge, it's easier on your hands to cover that ledge to spread out the force. Adding it certainly won't hurt if you want to add it.

hi, So you do not use vinyl to cover the springs as you did for the bottom half?
