These were the levels made to beta test the game's engine. You'll notice that they cover pretty much every aspect (like scrolling levels, levels that dip up and down), and include the little things like Kuribo's shoe.
You are confused, test levels are used by the programers to test mechanics, beta levels are used by the beta testers when the game reach the beta. These are test levels.
Please thumbs up this: These levels are beta levels that never made it to the final release. They are stored in the games memory but never made accessible as no world map references their level pointers. However someone made a world map (as seen in this video) to access the levels, since without it they were stray, inaccessible levels that otherwise would have been lost forever. This is NOT a ROM hack. These are are "lost" beta levels. I just wish they had put level "7" in the retail. Best one.
the underground level located between 4 and 5 looks a lot like an excisiting level in the regular game... interesting to see how some concepts were explored like swimming upwards into waterfalls and moving backgrounds(who are obviously somewhat glitched)...nice vid:)
I'm Rick Harrison, and this is my pawn shop. I work here with my old man and my son, Big Hoss. Everything in here has a story and a price. One thing I've learned after 21 years - you never know WHAT is gonna come through that door.
Waterfall level was pretty cool. The rising and falling ice level seemed like a diabolical concept. Had they brought that one to fruition, I would have lost many lives there. The fortress was pretty amusing. I'm all set to see some evil castle and it turns out to be a glorified mushroom house. Lol
Whoa... I actually had a dream about a level like the one labeled "8" on here once, way back when Mario 3 was new. The dream version also had a horizontal part with some sort of giant clam enemies that don't actually exist, though, instead of cutting off to a glitchy end-of-level area after you go through the pipe.
The creator of this world map, Aaron Kaluszka has confirmed that the world map is a rom hack of theirs. There is also a possibility that a modified cartridge exists where this world map can be accessed from a hidden button press on the SMB3 title screen. If this rom/cartridge is found, it will greatly speed up access to the lost levels on an unmodified NES.
i was also hoping that they were planning the ship as the final level, but if that they had canceled the mystery ship, that it was still acceseble in in the secret stgae. note that there was a level showed on the back of the mario3 pakage but it was actualy a level from a demo version including the different looking map screen.
my best guess was that these were levels tested out in the development stages (much like a tv pilot) and were removed due to being deemed too challenging prior to the game's release...
It's weird. Back when I was small, I had this game on this GBA, so I get a lot of nostalgia out of that version. This version...Not so much, even though it's the same great game.
@TheCube360 here's a thought, for the 30th anniversary they could make a version with levels designed by fans, you know run a little contest with it. what do you think? and they did realize some of the extra levels on the GBA version with e-cards.
Some really interesting level ideas there... For those who don't understand, these levels are all left over in the SMB3 ROM. This hack just creates a new world map to access them.
No those are left-over levels that Nintendo ment to add in the game, but were scrapped out. the hack just creates a map to access them. Go to the Cutting Room Floor.
If you go to The Cutting Room Floor (tcrf dot net), you can see these are leftover partial levels that were found on the original game rom. Plenty of games have these leftover bits on them.
The overworld map was created, but only to access those unfinished levels that ARE programmed into the game. It's just stuff Nintendo decided not to use, but left in the game data.
@TheCube360 or a super mario bros 3 remake with updated graphics or something lol. but still in a 2d format. Maybe in the future lol. Correct me if I'm wrong but they didn't even include super mario world in the 25th anniversary did they? I know its SNES game but if you're offering a mario collection why not throw in super mario world?
omg there were green flying beetles? aww.... and i liked the clear waterfalls in the level just before that. they should have used a lot of the patterns and monsters that were removed. the trio fish were neat.
Nice skills. Btw, for those who think it's fake, it's not. I played some of the levels. They're in the ROM but Nintendo didn't use them actually (maybe because some are unfinished). However, you can access the world by a game genie code. The OW is only fake because it has been made to make it able to test them. I know this because I played some of the lost levels (I acidentally got a ROM with them).
Cheats from Game Genie or similar may work to access some. But the most reliable and consistent way to access them is via a custom world map that "points" to the levels as shown in this video.
For those not in the know, these levels are actually sitting inside the ROM. They were just never finished or included in the game for whatever reason. Good vid
@Arwingpilot I'm not trying to be rude; but the only similarity for the middle screenshot on the box compared to the 3rd level in this video (in my opinion) was the background color. Who knows? Maybe the 2nd screenshot showed a test level that nobody found yet... Or it could be a completely different level. No guarantees, though.
Nintendo:Hmm,looks like they love Super Mario Bros games,we should make more such games. Developers:Why shouldn't we give them a chance to make their own levels and play it... Welcome to Super Mario Maker :D.
Rom edit or not, this is still really cool! However, I have seen these levels---or at least info---that matches what is in these lost levels, so it doesn't appear to be a rom edit at all. However, it would be even cooler if someone that knows how to hack were to "finish" the levels and create exits to the ones that lead nowhere.
these levels are actually on the game cartridge, but you can't get to them. They're just code leftovers. The different-colored cheepcheep swarms are interesting.
I remember reading somewhere that these levels do exist in the Super Mario Bros. 3 Cart, but you can't access them without using a cheat device. The world map in the video is probably a hack created specifically to access these "Hidden" levels.
Not fake. You can download a rom that has the World 1 hacked, but the stages are really in the original rom, the world was hacked so that the exit points of the map points to these stages in the real rom. Some of these stages might have been testing stages or meant to be in the game but wasn't included for some reason.
And now,a few words from my inner geek. This is actually a patch found over at themushroomkingdom, old patchbut all the "lost" beta levels in all their half-playable glory.
LittleGagePlanet In fact, there a psychological phenomenon where you can implant new and inexistent memories. But I think that he maybe played a hacked cartridge. It happens. I played one that you could use infinite items pressing B and then Select. I thought that this would work for every cartirdge, but it didn't.
Truly every stage in SMB3 was a work of art. Polished, those test stages coulda been awesome! Too bad they didn't at least use some of the test stage elements in the real thing though (Fish Trio, Green flying beetles, layered clouds, ""underwater ice stage!!")
@DamascusTer you make me wonder if there is somthing big no one knows about, like collecting every single coin in every world or something or getting all the enimies or all the ? blocks
It is common knowledge in the rom hacking community. In the video, the only change made to the game is a new World Map that points to different levels.
08:26 That was BRUCE LEE! Mad skills man, and as veteran Mario 3 Player I can see this is no cheating - he's playing wise and with pure knowledge of the levels + clean reflexes. Just good technique.
"super mario bros 3 - the lost levels" -- Now that is something Nintendo should have rewarded us with on this "25th anniversary of the NES" none of this "super mario all stars wii" business.
@DamascusTer I remember the exact same, always wondering what level that was and why I couldn't find it, I figured it was some secret level I didn't know how to get or something, I was a kid so it never occurred to me it might not be in the (Playable) game.
@krydder they were unfinished in the actual nes game, nintendo didn't add them because they were unfineshed, but they don't delet there bad levels they find a use, like in super mario bros you know the minus world glitch, like that but no way to get to them tere data is on the cardrige so you would need a game genie like i have wiht spciele codes
yea, that is real, los programadores hicieron esos niveles pero nunca los pusieron en la version final pero tampoco los quitaron, la unica manera de jugarlos es con un shark o en las versiones del game voy advance
@hatebreed516 Some cheats could access some of the levels. However as far as currently is known you need to hack the original ROM file in a way (such a custom world) to access to the levels.
@carmanino There's a website, the mushroom kingdom (Punch it into Google and it'll come up first). Go into NES and Super Mario Bros 3. Scroll all the way down to find a page of the lost levels. That should answer everything!
These were the levels made to beta test the game's engine. You'll notice that they cover pretty much every aspect (like scrolling levels, levels that dip up and down), and include the little things like Kuribo's shoe.
This is a hacked game, the world is fake but the levels are real, these are test levels.
+AtKiba Canal beta levels...
Wow thanks for that big corrections. But I actually think they're test levels instead of beta.
"beta" levels were used during "beta testing", hence the name
You are confused, test levels are used by the programers to test mechanics, beta levels are used by the beta testers when the game reach the beta. These are test levels.
where can I find it
Please thumbs up this: These levels are beta levels that never made it to the final release. Thx for letting us enjoy the world music at the end. that was a nice touch
the underground level located between 4 and 5 looks a lot like an excisiting level in the regular game... interesting to see how some concepts were explored like swimming upwards into waterfalls and moving backgrounds(who are obviously somewhat glitched)...nice vid:)
Amazing, even not being real it's really beautiful the stages and it's cool watching, and the player is amazing too.
It is real.
Just because you don't know where they are means nothing.
Beta test levels 100% real
the stages are hidden in the game code. you can access them with a game genie
impressive, i can see the the growth and development into the levels we grew to love as a child.
Yo whoever that was is like one of the smoothest Mario players EVER!!
Amazing!! I don't remember any mistakes in the first half
I'm Rick Harrison, and this is my pawn shop. I work here with my old man and my son, Big Hoss. Everything in here has a story and a price. One thing I've learned after 21 years - you never know WHAT is gonna come through that door.
Rain drop, drop top.. I'm Rick Harrison and..
I didn't understand what the secret stage was but I watched it all just to see the skills of this guy...
I always liked how the big plant-thing at the end of most stages looks like a hand, waving. (0:42), as an example.
Waterfall level was pretty cool. The rising and falling ice level seemed like a diabolical concept. Had they brought that one to fruition, I would have lost many lives there. The fortress was pretty amusing. I'm all set to see some evil castle and it turns out to be a glorified mushroom house. Lol
honestly this is the best game ever
if ur 20 years old and up this has to be one of ur favorites
Whoa... I actually had a dream about a level like the one labeled "8" on here once, way back when Mario 3 was new. The dream version also had a horizontal part with some sort of giant clam enemies that don't actually exist, though, instead of cutting off to a glitchy end-of-level area after you go through the pipe.
I'm in love with the person playing!

mario maker before mario maker
Super Mario Bros 3 has a error message. Your saved data is corrupted.
i was also hoping that they were planning the ship as the final level, but if that they had canceled the mystery ship, that it was still acceseble in in the secret stgae.
note that there was a level showed on the back of the mario3 pakage but it was actualy a level from a demo version including the different looking map screen.
my best guess was that these were levels tested out in the development stages (much like a tv pilot) and were removed due to being deemed too challenging prior to the game's release...
Nostalgia engaged and reaching critical levels... 3, 2, 1.... Kaboom ¡Explode in a thousand memories!!
It's weird. Back when I was small, I had this game on this GBA, so I get a lot of nostalgia out of that version. This version...Not so much, even though it's the same great game.

Go to the Cutting Room Floor.
thanks for showing the music at the end
To be honest they should’ve made this a secret world 9 for when you saved Peach. And yes I know this is not hacked and they are beta levels.
What the?
is this like a cheat for an emulation of snes mario?
or the real thing?
they look like unfinished levels =]
great vid!
The comment was wrote 12 years ago....
If you go to The Cutting Room Floor (tcrf dot net), you can see these are leftover partial levels that were found on the original game rom. Plenty of games have these leftover bits on them.
2006? omfg this video is old af. 😂 i feel so old now.😭
unknown4ever18 me too :'(
unknown4ever18 I
F*cking 2006??? This is damn old
+Sunky older than youtube
Pootis Bird Is still very old
+Verinen Pihvi how can this be older than TH-cam if it was made on TH-cam?
Noah G 8-)
1 year after my birth. Wow.
The overworld map was created, but only to access those unfinished levels that ARE programmed into the game. It's just stuff Nintendo decided not to use, but left in the game data.
You sir, are really good at this game.
You're pretty good. This is almost like a sepedrun.
The two ice levels (6 and 7) look pretty fun, and the beta 1-6 doesn't look bad too.
Watching this guy play makes me feel like less of a man for the mere fact that I will never be as good as he is at Super Mario Bros. 3.
omg there were green flying beetles? aww.... and i liked the clear waterfalls in the level just before that. they should have used a lot of the patterns and monsters that were removed. the trio fish were neat.
Nice skills.

We still look different at these games than the kids these days look at those classic games.
Cheats from Game Genie or similar may work to access some. But the most reliable and consistent way to access them is via a custom world map that "points" to the levels as shown in this video.
For those not in the know, these levels are actually sitting inside the ROM. They were just never finished or included in the game for whatever reason.
Good vid
Michikazuyamazaki,This is a very cool video.
King Koopa:Where's my son Bowser? Nah...get those plumbers!
I don't remember Mario bros 3 being like this.
The level is actually in the cartridge, but it has to be hacked to access it.
Ya
@Arwingpilot I'm not trying to be rude; but the only similarity for the middle screenshot on the box compared to the 3rd level in this video (in my opinion) was the background color. Who knows? Maybe the 2nd screenshot showed a test level that nobody found yet... Or it could be a completely different level. No guarantees, though.
When are in full run mode I think it increases the chance of getting a star really high.
there are pictures of some of these levels on the SMB3 box art if I recall correctly
Nintendo:Hmm,looks like they love Super Mario Bros games,we should make more such games.
Developers:Why shouldn't we give them a chance to make their own levels and play it...
Welcome to Super Mario Maker :D.

I beg to differ. Transform in mid air, and you can kill almost anything on the way down. Even the flame jets on the doomships.
these levels are actually on the game cartridge, but you can't get to them.
Yeah, i remember something about that. The mysterious level shot on the box that no one could find in the game.
Not fake. You can download a rom that has the World 1 hacked, but the stages are really in the original rom, the world was hacked so that the exit points of the map points to these stages in the real rom. Some of these stages might have been testing stages or meant to be in the game but wasn't included for some reason.
the red and black mario looked so kick ass
@Donut117 it is because he slowed down the game play to make all his jumps and actions seem perfectly timed when he sped the video back up.
as I can discover that level friend greetings from Argentinean
And now,a few words from my inner geek.
This is actually a patch found over at themushroomkingdom, old patchbut all the "lost" beta levels in all their half-playable glory.
Gotta love beta levels. Some of those were really neat!
i am almost positive i have played this world when the nes first came out without a hack.
LittleGagePlanet
In fact, there a psychological phenomenon where you can implant new and inexistent memories. But I think that he maybe played a hacked cartridge. It happens. I played one that you could use infinite items pressing B and then Select. I thought that this would work for every cartirdge, but it didn't.
Beta levels YAY!! Nice video, now we can see the hidden stuff in SMB3
Truly every stage in SMB3 was a work of art.
Polished, those test stages coulda been awesome! Too bad they didn't at least use some of the test stage elements in the real thing though (Fish Trio, Green flying beetles, layered clouds, ""underwater ice stage!!")
Dudes remote controllability makes him a oax
I just found the ROM patch for this, these levels are a new challenge for me...lol. Some of them are insane
@fttrx2 *inspects* Holy hell. Never knew that. I always used whistles to bypass World 7. Also, it's 7-3. But still, thanks for pointing that out.
for me, Mario 3 is the best out of all Mario games.
If you replay the NES version, you will see that the right side has always been like that.
@DamascusTer you make me wonder if there is somthing big no one knows about, like collecting every single coin in every world or something or getting all the enimies or all the ? blocks
It is common knowledge in the rom hacking community.
In the video, the only change made to the game is a new World Map that points to different levels.
Well, they ARE technically secret, being test levels...
tis was on the first 500 copies of super Mario 3 it was accessible with a debug code.
You've been cursed by "the million views malediction". I pity you.
Super neat, I love this game.
Whoever played this is a beast.
Also he modified the levels we used before:hacksystem. on the IPS patched on the SMB3 System file, used to find them easily
Yes those are unused levels!! at 5:07 you see the unused (gold cheep cheep) fish NPC being used!!
Best mario game ever made together with Mario 64
08:26 That was BRUCE LEE! Mad skills man, and as veteran Mario 3 Player I can see this is no cheating - he's playing wise and with pure knowledge of the levels + clean reflexes. Just good technique.
8:26
We now must learn the difference between "hacked" and "secret". Two very different things.
@Arz2003
Actually, the levels themselves were created, but were left unfinished by the original creators of the game. It's not fake.
Nice ROM hack man i just saw a vid where the was playing this but had a diffrent overworld view.
You can also transform mid air and damage enemies as well.
I love the concept of level 8, though it was clearly unfinished. I also really liked 11.
"super mario bros 3 - the lost levels" -- Now that is something Nintendo should have rewarded us with on this "25th anniversary of the NES" none of this "super mario all stars wii" business.
@DamascusTer
I remember the exact same, always wondering what level that was and why I couldn't find it, I figured it was some secret level I didn't know how to get or something, I was a kid so it never occurred to me it might not be in the (Playable) game.
It's not fake. This is the debug room, as someone suggested before. If I remember correctly, it's accessible with the use of Game Genie.
@danielwcas
I'm 18, and it is one of the best 2D platafromers I've ever played, together with kirby and DKC series
Now i really wanna play this on my wii now
The hills have eyes. Also, they're dancing
LOL, that was funny what you said in the beginning!
To those saying this is a hack: the levels still exist in the final game, but you can't ever get to them. This hack just adds a way to access them.
Anyone watching in 2021? Is the player still active?
yea, that is real, los programadores hicieron esos niveles pero nunca los pusieron en la version final pero tampoco los quitaron, la unica manera de jugarlos es con un shark o en las versiones del game voy advance
@TheCube360 the lost level came in super mario bros all stars wii along with super mario bros 1 2 and 3 and was for the 25 anniversary of super mario
this is probably a test level that used during the production of the game!
You can tell that Level 12 is when the developers just gave up and went home.
@hatebreed516 Some cheats could access some of the levels. However as far as currently is known you need to hack the original ROM file in a way (such a custom world) to access to the levels.
@carmanino
There's a website, the mushroom kingdom (Punch it into Google and it'll come up first). Go into NES and Super Mario Bros 3. Scroll all the way down to find a page of the lost levels. That should answer everything!
My god I love this I want play this betas are really the best ever.
I am really impressed
