    Where I grew up in New England we had a small plot of a few acres surrounded by town land that was all woods, hundreds of acres of it. We had a vegetable garden, about a quarter acre and we grew all sorts of vegetables and we canned about 2/3 of it. But we also went around and harvested wild food. We had wild strawberries, raspberries, blueberries and grapes. But we also harvested acorns and other wild nuts, and tons of greens. Spring was fun because of so many baby shoots that would grow out of the ground. I think as a kid I ate more salad just walking around the woods and back yard than at the dinner table. I can thank my grandmother for teaching me what I could eat. On a June day we could fill a basket with a weeks worth of greens and nuts in a few hours and later in the season berries. There has never been a time in my life when I couldn't go out into the woods and find free food. Now that I live in Florida I find different free food. I go out in my little boat and fish for about an hour or so and come back with blue crab, clams, various fish and have a feast. In a fish market my daily fish/shell fish intake would cost about $20. I eat it for free. I catch my own bait which is everywhere then catch my crabs and fish. Occasionally spiny lobster. The other day I caught a nice octopus and had calamari. Back in New England we made sweet deserts from sweet wild flowers like clover and wild violets. Did you know the French make a very expensive liquor out of flower petals. It's very tasty. I know because my grandmother made the same liquor the same way but she gave it away in little bottles as Christmas gifts. I used to pour a little into a jar of home made grape jelly to boost the flavor. I think a friend told me they saw the stuff on sale in Paris a few years ago for 500 Euros for a in liter bottle. My grandmother made the most delicious ice cream flavored by sweet clover flowers. No sugar needed!. We put up rose hips from wild roses. There were several wild grains that we harvested by snipping off the tops and filling baskets with them.
    Food is everywhere but we have been brain washed into thinking we can only eat what we buy in a grocery store or restaurant.

      If you're used to the grocerystore food, you can get sick from the wild edibles if you're not careful. Just because there's stuff on there that your body doesn't know about and it might hurt you.

    large amounts of raw chickweed can upset your stomach, cause diarrhea and vomiting due to toxic saponins. Boiling for 5 minutes helps to break these down. Pregnant women should avoid eating chickweed all together unless its in a survival situation

    There is a lot of free food in Georgia -- the pine tree is everywhere and it has enough free food to feed an army. The pine needles make a delicious sweet tea, the pine nuts are nutrient dense, and the pine bark is chock full of medicinal value, the pine pollen is has all the essential vitamins and minerals and the sap is used for wounds. Nature is bountiful.

    People are complaining about the fact that he is not washing the plants. ... To be honest so what!! I'm pretty sure that with the knowledge that he has already, he knows about pesticides etc. Many people do not have the privilege to wash their food. Resources are sometimes not available. Some people are so blind to see that it is a miracle that they can run water at anytime. Put your phone down, get unplugged, and go bond with nature. Anything you have can easily get ripped away from you.... Love the video btw 😝😝😝😁

    • @kathryndean2126
      @kathryndean2126 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tia Hazard If you have the capability you should always wash your produce because you don't know what kind of animal has done its business on those plants, plus chemicals from weed killers and whatnot. If he doesn't get sick from it, more power to him, but try not to make it a habit.

    • @zakosist
      @zakosist 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I didn't even think about complaining of that. To me it just looks natural. And I'm pretty sure our ancestors didn't wash their plants before eating when they came across them in the wild, and in many cases it wasn't even an opportunety. If you ever need to survive in the wild, when is when you most need to know edible wild plants, it may not be an opportuney for you either. And for the pesticide thing, why would anyone spray pesticides on their private lawn anyway? And if they did they would be aware of it, most likely you could even taste or smell it if the plant was sprayed

    Those are mock strawberries, or Indian strawberries. They are not poisonous, and yes are edible, however they have no taste, true wild straw berries dangle, and have white flowers. The one you ate, mock strawberries stand straight up and have yellow flowers.. Both edible but no flavor in the one you ate unless they have perfect growing conditions and even then, very little.

    • @cathyb5388
      @cathyb5388 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Cook them with a little olive oil and garlic, but pick the leaves while young. They're less bitter then. You can also cultivate them in a bed, just like you would any other green. But don't let them go to seed unless you collect the seed. Your neighbors wouldn't appreciate it if they're perfect lawn crazy! lol

    Those are wood strawberries...recognizable by the seeds being on top of the fruit rather than embedded. Folks around here (NC) used to call them snakeberries and told us as kids that they were poisonous. They are, however, edible non-poisonous fruits although only good for survival as they have no flavor. Wild strawberries look very similar, but they look like "regular" strawberries, just small. They are very tasty but hard to find these days...at least in my area. Thank you for the video. I finally saw chickweed in a manner that I could recognize it as a plant growing in my yard. Most of the books available are of questionable use as they really don't picture things in a manner that allows you to really be able to tell what they are when found in your yard. Again, thanks.

    When I was little I used to run around in the forest by my house every day, and sometimes I'd come across a wild strawberry on the ground if I was really lucky. Those strawberries always tasted so much sweeter and more flavorful than the ones from the grocery store, which tend to be sour where I live. I'm surprised that you find them better tasting than the wild ones, although you might live where the supermarket strawberries don't need to travel as far as they do to get to me.

      I think you would smell/taste that. Besides no other animal thinks that way, and in most situations where you really need to know about wild edible plants, washing them in advance may not be an opportunity or you need to save your water for something more important. I personally choose to ignore those thoughts if I have no clear indicator that those plants have gotten dirty

    Do these plants have nutrient value??

    • @primitivepathways
      @primitivepathways  10 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      YEs they do, and in many cases wild plants are actually more nutritious than the vegetables you buy in the store. They have higher vitamin and mineral contents, and because they are fresh you get their full antioxidant potential. Store bought veggies have sat around, been transported, and their nutrients degrade during that time.

      I was looking for a comment saying this before I posted the same thing. I realized what they were when I ate one once, thinking it was a wild strawberry. He picked up I thought it was an Indian mock strawberry, then hen when he said it didn't taste like anything I knew it was. They are rich in vitamin. C and a few other nutrients though.

    • @xXMeecrobXx
      @xXMeecrobXx 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      They are easy to detect the mock strawberry is mostly round and has seeds raised out of the fruit also the fruit grows upwards like a flower a wild strawberry has hanging fruits with a tip and the seeds are dimpled in the fruit.

    I grew up watching and "helping" my dad garden but this year I am putting in my own garden. In doing research into the veggies I plan to grow I am noticing that most of what we grow to eat is stuff that is anything but natural. It got me to thinking why we don't grow and eat more natural stuff to our areas. Stuff you could go out into the woods, or fields, or our yards to find and harvest. Instead we grow things that are kinda tricky to get just right. Seems counter productive considering why you are doing it.

    As a fellow aspiring botanist and a professional wetland scientist, I have to say that you did a fabulous job. You are did excellent cinematography for deomonstration with focusing on the plants. Demonstrating yourself that the plant is edible really helps to drive the point home.
    I would critique the last plant you grabbed you stated that you were not sure about the species and you failed to inspect the flowering parts of the flower (at least for the camera) before you dove in and ate it. While you likely knew yourself that the species was edible, it's important here not to miss the main lesson, namely that you have edibles in your backyard and they are safe to eat. BUT you must be 100% certain that the plant species is the correct species BEFORE you consume that specimen. I would also mention what are in the world you are (ex eastern US) therefore someone might be able to better understand where these plants are found common in those habitats. All in all I would say your video is near a 10/10 and I could not have done a better job myself I am inspired to create one of my own. Thanks

    Those berries were mock strawberries. Similar to wild strawberries, but mostly tasteless. Easy way to tell is the color of the blossoms (white flower = wild strawberry, yellow flower = mock). Also the direction the berry is pointing. Mock strawberries point straight up, wild strawberries tend to dangle more. Still perfectly edible.

    It looks like you misidentified wild strawberry (genus Fragaria) with Potentilla indica. That would explain why your "strawberries" didn't taste like store bought strawberries, and why they were earlier in the season than you expected. Potentilla indica has yellow flowers. Luckily it's edible too, but if I am correct (and i'm usually right when it comes to edible plants) maybe you should stop teaching edible plants until you become an expert.

Even though you can't buy it fresh either in a Chinese pharmacy store, or at any grocery store, some people do have their favorite home recipe of dish, and it's called "Scrambled egg with dandelion leaves". Try and cook it by yourself, if anybody feels interested in.

    Make no mistake, I eat dandelions and clovers, too, but I would highly recommend you check to see if your neighbors and business partners and whatnot spray their yards and landscapes with chemicals first before you start chowing down. I usually pick the dandelions and clovers first and stash them away to either dry out for kindling or freeze them so I can thaw and boil them afterwards. And if I want to eat the leaves and roots as is, I'd hold them beneath a running faucet for five seconds or ten.

    Many years ago, Paris was famous for being so beautiful because of edible gardens all over the city. It is possible to grow in cities - it is very clean to do so. Also why the French are known for having great food - fresh food is better. *Wash* your edible weeds by soaking them in apple cider vinegar for 5 minutes - and don't eat any leaves that are discolored, as it is a sign of parasites or other buggies.
