  • The island of Komodo in Indonesia looks like a lost paradise. But watch your step! A strange animal that can dispatch a goat or a person in two seconds flat is the dominant predator: the Komodo dragon, the largest lizard on earth.
    A crew of mariners, scientists and filmmakers are followed as they cast off on the Sedna IV, an oceanographic schooner, to sail around the world exploring the beauty of nature, how ecosystems work and conservation challenges facing the planet.

    Ahmad and Denny, the two Indonesians in the film, are nice and helpful persons who have the qualification in dealing with the living dinosaur. In 2018, I was hired by them (Komodo Survival Program) to run a one-month English program for the local people. It was really nice to work with them. At the end of the program, I was given a valuable chance to visit komodo island. That was an unforgettable experience I had in my life. Thanks a lot Ahmad, Denny and Sanggar.

      @@prambon6468 That's something you may can shed a light on. This kind of "harmony" with those vicious beasts seems odd to me. How can you live with such a thread that your children are in danger to be being attacked on their way to school or even in your own premises? Why don't they build fences against those creatures around their village to protect themselves?

      @@Spielkalb-von-Sparta well, it sounds impossible for us to live with such a real threat. However, they have lived there for hundreds years and unbelievably they do not consider the beasts as something that you have to afraid of. They firmly believe that the komodos and other beasts deserve to live in their origin habitat. They even say that in the past ten years, the victims of the komodo's attacks were only four lives. Then they compare this to the loss of many lives in big and modern cities caused by car accidents, criminals, drugs, and so forth. LOL..!!!

    • @YamaXI
      @YamaXI ปีที่แล้ว

      Wrong and right at the same time. We care about money, yes. We build factories to make it, yes. But we also OVERHUNT more than any of that. Look up how many species were killed off by us before the Industrial Revolution, spoiler: it’s a very good amount. My point? Overhunting contributes around the same if not more, pollution will most likely overcome that in the coming decade though however. We wipe out anything that’s a threat to us even though it is nature for them to feed on us, we’re not gods we’re animals too and we can be prey. Not that we’d want to, not even prey wants to be prey. But when you target predator species to extinction, that’s an issue. Lions we’re all over the world! And now they’re considered an African animal, how heartbreaking is that? How about the rhino species that have gone extinct? Or the elephant species such as the Assyrian elephant, and it was said to be Hannibal, from the Punic wars, that had a one tusked larger than usual elephant and it was thought to be one of the last Assyrian elephants. There were other elephants too actually they’re just gone now because we’ve decimated their habitats. Lots and lots of birds are gone now, used to be one in North America that covered the sky and blacked the sky for days on end when it migrated. We shot them out of the sky too much for too many years and they’re now gone 😢

    (37:22) "Here spiritual values, beliefs, and mythologies do more to safe guard this endangered species, than the concepts or protection and nature conservation" that's pretty deep. Their ways that have been utilized for centuries were more effective than more sophisticated methods of conservation. These people even with the defense of the Komodo's attack will only deter the creature away instead or attack back out of revenge or malice. "It ate one of our children, but no hard feelings .... it was fate" As crazy as that sounds, I still respect that mindset. The best way to protect any species is to preserve it habitat from humans and to leave them alone, especially from tourist and people with good intention who only want to watch like visitors in a zoo, good intentions, often has negative unintended consequences , sadly humans are always looking for way to exploit nature for scientific and economic reasons....

    They now know they are venomous and very intelligent as well, and they have a very powerful sense of smell. They can bite a water buffalo or deer or pig which will collapse from the venom in the bite in a few days. I suppose the animal collapses from organ damage. They use to think their prey died from bacteria in the bite, but they now know it is venom. Anyway after biting their pray they will track it until it lies down, then they dig in for a feed.

    This half baked video could mislead people into thinking that Komodo live side by side with people in one island. The truth is more complicated than that. First of all Komodo is an evasive animal, they came hundred kilometers away from Australia thousand years ago. Just like another evasive animal, they are equipped with highly sophiscated survival tools. Not only they look menacingly big, venomous, rapid, and able to reproduce without male they can also DIVE AND SWIM from island to island. No village is safe from them.

    Just for a clarification sake ... Nobody sane was poaching the Komodos . It's their prey that get poached which in turn dwindling their allready scarce food sources . The Central Govs were allready starting tightening the coast patrol between the island proper and quite a bit heavy handed in giving the punishment too ... But , the damages were allready done and it takes time for the nature to adjust and correct it self ...
    At the end of the day poverty was the bane for all civillization . Before 1997 crisis nobody even bother to poach some shitty water buffalos and deers in remote areas not to mention the area get poached was the dreaded Rinca and komodo islands .
