I feel bad for Don, map gave all the resources to viper, who is playing the French with arguably the strongest units in the game. Both gave a great show nonetheless :)

i don't know why English players open with long bows against the french. Long bows are really just anti-archer archers. And are useless against knights. Archers in aoe4 are closer to skirmishers in aoe2.
I think english vs french is the only circumstances where aging up using abbey of kings is better than council hall. Instead of massing longbow, you can just massing spear and keep healing them using them.
@@MrRoboticeyes And with healing, you can be more confident against mangonels, but then again, what is the counter to spears? Archers. Being able to answer enemy archers immediately, later in the game can still be useful. As english, I would go spears -> knights -> long bows. But if the feudal age last too long, then I would have to go spears -> long bows -> knights, since knights are only available to the English in the castle age, and there is no other option for enemy archers than long bows.

There's plenty of variety it's just the meta is narrow right now because the game was just released and the French are OP. A french player will always dictate the tempo of the game because they get knights online faster than other civs can mass spears etc. Knights, being mounted, can control the early game map better than foot soldiers and so other civs are forced onto spears, Palisades, and archers / crossbows to try to hold. We are seeing this same situation play out over and over again because there hasn't been a patch yet. When the patch drops, things will definitely be more interesting. No one is saying other civs are unplayable or weak, for the most part most of the other civs are balanced fine (Chinese, Delhi, Abbasid and HRE could maybe get some buffs). No other civ really has the tools to deal with that. Sure you can wall up and try to delay, but that's all the french player needs you to do because then they control more of the resources on the map and will scale better into late game as a result, they will have more comfortable trade etc. And that's exactly what happened in this very game!
