It definitely is one BIG entry! How they transported the whole atmosphere just in this beginning is goosebump-inducing. The production design is just brilliant... perfectly fitting for Shishio.

This has me hyped af 😭 Then he proceeded to get jumped by 3 other guys and beat them all himself while slowly starting to die from his overheating burns. Absolute monster in this movie 🔥
To be fair, while yes, the adaptation was the best anime live action ever made so far, its much more easy on a technical level to adapt sword fights than ki blasts and whatnot. However one adaptation that did wonder with energy attacks was Street fighter ansatsuken (Though it was strictly speaking a game adaptation)

The fact that you need 4 of the strongest characters in the series just to stop an injured and time limited Shishio shows that he was indeed the most skilled samurai of the era.

The Meiji government justified his disregard for life and the brutality of his actions which would discredit them, I mean for example if they were trying to implement changes or to earn the locals' trust, no one would comply, and things would turn out as a revolution. The perfect moment to illustrate disregard for life was when he took down two of his henchmen without any reason (Kyoto Inferno). What was the point of that? To test his katana sword. To be more specific, watch the scene minutes before Kenshin first met Shishio Makoto. Disregard for life also implied he would finish off a wounded comrade instead of rescuing him.
Best part is, he seemingly succeeded. In later parts of the manga when Kenshin is near death, it is Shishio that shows up to collect. The new Demon King of Hell.

Fun fact, the actor that played Shishio in the live action, also played the main lead in the Japanese Battle Royale movie. Which is fitting and ironic considering both characters fight for their lives in a hellish society only to be labeled an enemy and dangerous by their respective Japanese government.

BR's lead being labeled a criminal was unjust - he was a relatively civil kid, who got dealt a shit hand by a totalitarian govt despite not even being a delinquent like his classmates. Shishio was betrayed because he was the total opposite - though underhanded, I can understand why the Meiji govt would chose to try kill someone like him. He wasn't killed because he was a hitokiri - if that was so, then even Kenshin would have been targeted. No, they attempted killing him because even as a hitokiri, he engaged in unsanctioned killings and committed war crimes without authority. By the end of the war, his activities had made him so toxic that being associated with him was likely to destroy the fledgling new govt's reputation in the eyes of the populace. BR's lead was an innocent puppy - while Shishio was a rabid dog that survived being euthanized and went on to start a plague.
I finally found it, my favorite part is ofc the choir from 2:30 and the first time I heard it was around 4 years ago in Black Cat anime and I was so enchanted I had to cut the part of the episode that contained it, though now that I find it only plays for a tiny part of the track I wish they extended it. And then this year I finally settled to watch the Kenshin movies and oh boi I was so surprised when I heard this I was like holyshit it's the same track wtf but then I didn't have high hope to find it easily on the net, but now that I heard a split sec of it again in some vid I had to look it up and luckily I ended up here on the second try so thank you for the share ! 😁
Hey I've been on the search for that chant at 2:30 as well, but I'm still wondering where the original came from. It's featured in multiple anime and even a techno song Zhu & nero - Dreams. Anime that I've found it in are, Dragon ball resurrection F with the name Chikyo no Saigo, and of course Black Cat with the chant unnamed. I wonder how old this chant really is
I don't remember hearing it in that movie but I'll take your word for it, based on what you said it's then probable that the chant is recorded as a sample for use in music making softwares, I came across some choirs while testing one last year.

Its also in "Assassin's Creed Lineage - Complete Movie" @ ~7:10 and I'm sure i've heard it a long time ago before that so it's most certainly a free source sample everyone can use probably because in the previous decades many many more things were free and done out of love rather than money. I cant be certain but i think i've heard it first in an old game i've played a long time ago. Unfortunatelly i can't remember which. But its clear its from western origins.
Naoki sato also did the soundtrack for Godzilla -1. if you havent seen that movie go and see it. it's by far the best godzilla movie and the soundtrack is amazing. same feeling as the rurouni kenshin movies.
