    The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

    They sing Berlin really well. Did they ever include standards on their albums or did they ever sing standards in concert with their own repertoire?

    • @charcasc7462
      @charcasc7462 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      They released a couple of albums of standards or show tunes--Sing Rodgers and Hart and Funny Girl. And a few standards are included on the I Hear a Symphony album. Live, about half their set list was devoted to show tunes, standards and covers, while some of their biggest hits were confined to a rushed medley.

    Birdsong almost completely inaudible here. She's like a wisp added to Mary's voice. I've always wondered why she's so turned down. She and Mary sound much more together and up front on the Fats Waller medley. You can hear Wilson harmonizing at the very end but where is Cindy's voice? Strange.

      It’s likely that Cindy sang here, just lower than Mary. Actually, Mary’s voice was most prominent on many of their performances. Their performance of “My World is Empty Without You” on this same show a couple years before is basically all Mary on backgrounds (and that was when Flo was still in the group). Same with the song “Where Did Our Love Go”. All you really hear is Mary on those vocals.

      Since Cindy's voice was softer than Mary's, they really should have positioned her closer to the microphone, or pulled Mary back. Some of the recordings just sound like a duet of Diana and Mary.

    I hated this era of the supremes. Berry Gordy lost his mind trying too hard to get them to be accepted by white America. It's classy but a little too grandma ish

    • @jobucats2166
      @jobucats2166 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My opinion is that it was genius of Berry Gordy to broaden the appeal of this dynamic group. From the beginning of their success, they had always included 'standards' and 'Broadway tunes' in their act. Doing so allowed them perform in the most prestigious clubs and venues in the world. It also allowed them to also expose their hits to 'white' America. To us, the Supremes were for our entertainment; however, to Berry Gordy and Motown, they were major money makers and at the end of the day, there ain't nothing wrong with that. As someone who grew up in this era, I am grateful that I was exposed to this 'grandma' music as performed by the Supremes. It broaden my appreciation of all types of music.
