I think that many right wing columnists (Hopkins, Littlejohn etc.) write for shock value to sell more copy, and I struggle to believe that what they say is truly what they feel. I may disagree with Hitchens on many things, however I feel that his opinions are genuinely true to his heart. I can't lump him in with Littlejohn and co. He is eloquent and polite in explaining his viewpoints. We should be able to maturely listen and objectively evaluate a range of opposing viewpoints. Social media now profiles us and offers us only things it thinks we'll like and agree with. It's healthy to listen to what a range of different people think however, and I applaud the channel for promoting this...

I don't agree with anyone 100% and Peter Hitchens is no exception, but he brings up some very good points. If only we had more people who took the view that we can listen to anyone, disagree with some points and agree with others and there's no need to ban them or de-platform them, etc.

@@tomd3448 Twitter and TH-cam feeds me real Leftists, and anti-SJW anti-commie voices, I keep the bots confused.
I DO believe what critics say of communism, including Left critics. Dogmatic beliefs. My own view of the USSR and Marxist ideals of radical grassroots democracy, The Meek Shall Inherit the Earth, Politically. A society and economy needs some centralization. That can't very well be illiterate or poorly-read and ignorant workers given full power and responsibilities for all national decisions.
Therefore, there WILL arise an isolated Vanguard of leaders, surrounding one or few Great Leaders. Dictatorship of the Proletariat turns into Dictatorship.
Anarchist Utopia will require public structures and influential leaders will arise, unless the Great Mob grants leadership to the most-marginalized and least-successful, which is probably a path to worse disaster.

The only reason crime can be claimed to be down is because the two most common types of crime from back then, namely car crime, especially ram raiding and car theft, and housebreaking have died down massively. Of course they died down not because of the police or courts but because of capitalism and new technology. Emobilisers were the big one.

38:00 here by Peter's logic we shouldn't treat people with broken arms if they made a mistake - only treat people who had their arms broken by someone. Its truly too far conservative. Addiction isn't a choice, the action is. Some people with cancer have it because they smoke, like for instance his own brother. He chose cancer so we shouldn't treat him like he's sick?

Just like his -views on cannabis, he seems to be holding onto the time-tested thoughts on addiction. At times he reminds me of the by-gone days when your GP may tell you to pull yourself together when you try to talk to them about being depressed.

    • @Notallowed101
      @Notallowed101 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

@@misterdaz1018 He also picks and chooses when to consider alcohol the same as "drugs". For example, he considerers the role of cannabis is the extremism of certain criminals yet is ignorant to the role of alcohol in the same manner. If he, however rightly considered alcohol on-par with cannabis he would see that its drug use in general that CORRELATES to extreme behaviour.
He however is convinced that cannabis CAUSES extreme behaviour. Rather than extreme amounts of cannabis and/or other drugs combined with factors like job prospects, family life, crime in their neighbourhood and pre-existing mental health conditions. On top of this you have to consider how criminalisation of certain drugs pushes people into feeling like criminals and becoming more suseptable of falling further from society.
Its all rather complicated really and for someone like him to say something something so stupid after reading the word "cannabis" in peices about terrorists... well. To be honest the one thing they do ALL have in common is gender - but we wouldn't see him saying this is somehow men's fault.

  • @JesseBrown-qf6zp

His view on marijuana reminds me of a study about depression and violent crime. Actually the study was sent to me by a person who was eager to prevent people who have been depressed from buying firearms.
It asserted that depression caused people to commit violent crime, which on the face of it is a rather surprising claim, but I think this link becomes understandable when we recognize that the researchers got it all backward; people who lead chaotic lives of which violent crime is a feature are more susceptible to develop mood-related issues. Now the aim of the researchers may have been to find justifications for such behavior, but that is another topic.
I suspect Hitchens' aversion to marijuana may stem from faulty logic such as exemplified above.

I think you might find it difficult to back that up with a reliable study, as people aren't so quick to admit illegal behaviour in a survey.
However we can look at countries which have legalised it, and seen hard drug addiction problems drop considerably as a result. Not to mention the ability to regulate the potency and generate taxes rather than funding other criminal activity.

@@jordane1350 that last point was rather convincing tbf. Peter speaks so much sense on every other subject other than the cannabis issue BUT imo it is an insidiously addictive drug. But I think legalising it would put a lot of emphasis on how many daily users there actually is... there's so many people out there like me that wake up and have a joint before they even eat! I am more than self aware that is nitty behaviour, it's not like I start shaking if I dont have one but I can start to feel sick/nauseated if I don't though? I guess what I'm saying is its definitely not harmless. So I agree with having people like Peter arguing against it.. it keeps both sides honest.

A few more realistic economists explained the post USSR Russian economic collapse, a few good reasons.
    1. New Russia agreed to absorb old debts of the USSR, largely or partly incurred by propping up, maintaining, defending, controlling Soviet satellite states.
    2. These debts were not denominated in Rubles, which only Russia makes. Govt Debts were denominated in foreign currency, US Dollars, Wall Street, and had to be repaid in foreign money. HUGE distinction. (Similar for the German Republic at Weimar, after the Versailles treaty.)
    3. Boris Yeltsin was probably drunk when he agreed to let Wall Street and Western economists design their economy using "shock therapy". Either that or a traitor for hire by the CIA. Maybe. Who knows.
    4. People, critics, noted that Soviet imperialism didn't bring economic benefits to the motherland. No gains. Only costs.
    5. But mostly 2, Russia was broke in terms of Dollars not Rubles, but also lack of power made them vulnerable to demands of Washington, the IMF, Deutsche Bank, etc.
    6. Britain doesn't have THOSE issues. They have the sovereign Pound, not the Euro. They have neoliberal economics, which has explained that dismantling industry and business, and looting assets, is MORE economically "efficient" than building a successful business over time with hard work and brains, because ROI is bigger and faster with looting.

It would be nice if car ownership was greatly reduced. A recurring source of despair is arriving in a picturesque rural village and the place is infested by cars; cars parked along the high street, full car parks, cars congesting the roads at all hours of the day. One wonders what it would be like if rural villages were pedestrianised. There is a very wide high street in a village near me and I suggested to a friend who lives there that it would be a good idea to close it off and create a 'piazza' in the middle of the village, where the pubs and restaurants could have outdoor areas and a general meeting place was established. 28:27 - timestamp where he talks about Cannabis
The problem with many of the 'reasons' (if you can even call them that) for cannabis remaining illegal, is that most of them can be remedied by legalising cannabis.
38:18 - "Judicious application of the criminal law" - He seems to think that if you somehow 'go hard' on people caught then it's going to magically stop and no one anywhere is going to use drugs, this quite simply is not the case, if there is money to be made criminals will do it, this is one of the arguments FOR legalisation, take the money out of the hands of organised criminal gangs, therefore they won't do it, cannabis is easy money for criminals, and the current system facilitates there money making
There are reasons why cannabis is illegal and let me just say do your research, it has nothing to do with terrorism like this guy claims, being super strict on drugs WILL NOT WORK (just look at previous years) the only way to stop criminals making money, the only way to ensure a safe end product is to legalise it, regulate it, tax it
look at the timber industry, using hemp instead of timber, look at the pharmaceutical industry (and how much the UK makes from it) if cannabis were legalised people would self-medicate and not take pills, losing the pharma companies money, look at the people/companies who BENEFIT from cannabis being illegal, and there, you will find why cannabis is really illegal

While I may be an enthusiast, I'm no advocate. And I'm not the kind of user that beleives Cannabis to be harmless. I'm willing to accept that all the instances of horrific murder he cites could well have been done under the influence. I'd go as far as to say that obviously people with mental health issues should excercise extreme caution with any mind-altering substance.
However - I wonder why; given it's prevalance in society and ease of purchase, how Hitch thinks keeping Cannabis illegal and underground is helping the matters he's primarily concerned with?
Surely if Cannabis were controlled and regulated (not that I'm in favour of that) we'd be better placed to deal with such examples?

    • @SolarJakee

Hitches is generally pretty irrational and dare I say idiotic when it comes to drug use and addiction. Try telling a month old baby who's mother was shooting up heroine while it was in the womb that there's not such thing as addiction. He might as well claim that the earth is flat or that the sun revolves around the earth.
You could say we should pretend there's no such thing as addiction so people can't use it as an excuse. I would disagree with that argument but at least it wouldn't be based on a fairytale assumption.
Also, being against at the very least researching cannabis for medicinal use only is a similarly indefensible position. Criminalisation, sure, I can see a fair argument for that. But preventing people who have severe arthritis and epilepsy from the chance at a potentially successful treatment is idiotic, amoral or both.

He has the most shallow logical viewpoints which he pushes non stop. Other countries have done so much better in dealing with the drugs problem - portugal for example.
The history of prohibition and punishment is a failure from day one. Alcohol being one example - the black market created rich, violent criminals and due to demand, never stopped people that wanted to drink from drinking at all.. same with drugs.
Look at legalising weed in canada.. did amount of people using it change. No. Taxing it has given them billions more to spend on education and positive projects.
Its time for a new paradigm.. Not more punishment.
Education and clean and regulated drugs. Not street crap with no quality, killing people and the crime that comes with it.

    "legalisation is never reversable"
He often says this, but pot was legal in this country not that long ago

You can say that about many things in the past, distant or not and get it backwards as you have on this point. It's not a case that it was legal, it's that it wasn't illegal; it hadn't been classified as a problem requiring legislation.

Love peter hitchins but dont agree on the weed , imagine how much time the police an docs would have if we banned alcohol from public places. Massive waste of resource dealing with drunks . Violent behaviour from weed is rare no doubt about it ive never heard of it.

    Bullshit.
If legalizing drugs was irreversible then how did the drugs become illegal in the first place?

Switzerland is the European country (non warzaw pact) that is failing most slowly. And they have more referendoms than anyone else. Germany is hardly an ideal to follow by any measure.

    • @jaromor8808

Exactly, referendum have the nice aspect about them that those who suffer the consequences are the same people who make the decisions.

    • @martinan22
      @martinan22 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

@@jaromor8808 Well, I do not think referendums are a solution in themselves. The Swiss system has two very good things. Almost total regional autonomy. And lots of institutions to stop political decisions. For example, an assembly that is made up of non permanent non professional politicians that can veto laws, referendums that can veto laws and political decisions, and an assembly of regional representatives (like the senate) that can veto political decisions.
But still, referendums are one of the few weapons for us non Swiss against the corrupt elites.

Always interesting to hear Mr Hitchens input on politics . He and his Brother are/were popular because they Speak truth were most politicians just don't. It is somewhat disturbing to see the amount of laughter many of his stark comments on real issues that are deliberately ignored by the Police and govt. authorities.
