When I went to court to get my divorce, one of the other cases in the courtroom that day had a lovely Karen. She had filed a request to change the custody arrangements of her grandson to give her son full custody. Her reason was that Junior spends 40 hours a week in daycare while his mom is off at work, which must be terrible for him! Also, the mom's house is too big for a child that small. Instead of living with his mom, wouldn't it be so much better if the grandmother was given custody? Then he could spend all day every day with her and her son (who has moved back in with her because he doesn't have a job and isn't looking for one) and they could co-parent him. The judge was like "Ma'am I'm not going to...(stops himself). Ma'am the paperwork you filed is for parental rights. Since your son is the parent and your son isn't here, I'm unable to do anything. You need to file for grandparent visitation." She says she WANTS to be the parent which the judge says is invalid and tells her to leave.
45 minutes later when my case is done I go out into the hallway where Grandma Karen is on the phone with her son. She tells him she's called him several times. He must have said he was asleep because she tells him he needs to start waking up earlier. She tells him that it's terrible that he doesn't even care enough about her grandson to give her custody of him. She tells him to clean his room while she works on filing the new paperwork. In my state for a grandparent to get visitation rights, you have to prove that the person with custody isn't acting in the best interest of the child and that access to the grandparent is in the child's best interest and that must be by a preponderance of the evidence so I doubt Grandma Karen ended up with anything.
Meanwhile, the mystery of why such a healthy marriage failed remains unsolved.

To be fair, while she WAS being cavalier and seemed a space cadet, that "adios" didn't seem like it should warrant an additional charge. The tone he said "Bye bye!" with, the way she said it was a friendly reply it seemed, not being disruptive or holding the court in contempt. By all means give her the full sentencing and fine and such, but to ding her for that and then ding her again for getting angry at getting dinged, just seemed pretty. Less about reform and more about punishment.

The penalty for drunk driving should be much higher. Maybe not as high as murder, but still higher. You chose to drink, and then you chose to drive, knowing that it is very risky. It would be the same as shooting someone as a joke. You know it may kill them, but you still do it anyway. The minimum of three years is a joke. A woman in Texas who had a weed felony was told by the polls office that she could vote, and when she tried to she was arrested and given 5 years. People have got more than a decade for a weed felony but you can get away with three years for killing someone.

nervous laughter is involuntary and is a natural response. Look it up and the "milgram experiment". Its spontaneous and uncontrollable.
