  • Hi all, in this video I replace a snapped belt in a dryer I found at the dump. Unfortunately I had a few filming difficulties but this video will still show you the correct way to replace a belt on a Simpson Dryer. This process is exactly the same for a Westinghouse and Electrolux dryer. Sorry for the rushed nature of the vid but it was a last minute decision to film it. Hope this can help some people.

    Cheers mate for reminding me how to do this. Just over 10 years ago, our Westinghouse dryer belt kicked the bucket, so I ordered two on-line and fixed it. The one I put on just broke as well and thankfully I still had that second one I ordered but could not remember how to install it. Your video saved me heaps of time!
    One thing I've noticed the first time I did this, was that the buggers are putting the travel path of the belt too close to the element, which slowly burns it away. Anyway, I've managed to get 20 years of service out of this dryer and hopefully another 10 are coming up.
    Cheers once again!

      Hey man no worries! Whow 20 years is amazing 😯 You'll definitely get another 10 out of it as long as you jump onto every tiny odd sound before it becomes a major issue. Especially the grinding type of sounds. But it sounds like your pretty vigilant. Good on ya mate 😎👍

    thank you thankyou thank you!!! I am 62 and never had much to do with dryers but have one now and the belt frayed and of course, did just what you said.....motor works but barrel not turning. Found the belt, ordered a new one....turned up in 2 days and watched your fabulous video!!! I CAN DO THIS!! I am super happy and feel confident. It feels so good to fix something instead of ditching it for another. Really appreciate your time and efforts. Sorry about your Gimble. You worked hard getting this video together. I’m feeling very capable right now! With your help I got the back off my dryer, vacuumed out an unbelievable amount of fluff, and found that the pulley idler is totally worn. Thanks for video. A while back my belt on a Bosch dryer came off and a was able to reposition easily without taking all apart. But the Simpson wasn’t so easy. Just FYI, my neighbours house burnt to the ground due to a fire from dryer lint. And years ago my ex mother-in-law claimed her dryer didn’t work and when I checked the lint filter it had never been cleaned. She was not that switched on and Father-in-law was not clearly at all handy.

    Thanks very much! Couldn’t find a service manual for the Electrolux but this was spot on - all insides the same.
    Our idler was also perfectly fine - in our case the belt snapped because the dryer was overloaded with a wash load where the spin hadn’t completed, and it wasn’t picked up by the person loading the dryer. Explained the burning rubber smell at the time it happened.

    Did a complete disassemble & clean on a Hoover dryer the other night, it’s one of the older models that was made in Australia (1992). No maintenance ever performed on the unit and for the first 20 years of its lifespan, the lint filter wasn’t emptied at all - mum wasn’t aware of its existence until just a few years ago.
    Had recently begun to emit a burning smell, so I figured I’d take a crack and clean the thing out and see if I couldn’t diagnose the problem.
    Once I got it open, it was quite a sight. There was so much dust inside the unit I was surprised it was still functioning at all. Got to the heating element and of course found a large clump of lint jammed in it that had turned completely black from the element and probably would have caught fire if not dislodged. Went to pick it up to remove it and it turned to ash in my hand.
    Anyway, after deep cleaning it and putting it all back together, gave it a test run and it ran like a beauty - better than ever in fact, and I didn’t even need to replace anything in it. Even the original belt was still in great condition. Suffice to say, they don’t make them like this anymore.
    Anyway, thanks for the video mate! Appreciate what you’re doing for the community, keep up the great work!

      Wow good on you mate! Yeah I see dryers in that state a lot. I had a woman drop around a 40 year old Hoover last year begging me to fix it. I couldn't, didn't have the parts. Thanks for this video! My very old one of these “died” today so I decided to pull it apart to see what happened and this video helped immensely! Mine turned out to be the idler pulley sticking on the shaft! Cleaned and greased the shaft and it’s working a treat! Hi there I have a Easatto tumble dryer model evd7 and it's making a burning smell do you have any recommendations in what this can be not making any odd nosies and I've cleaned out the lint

    • @DIYDumpRat
      @DIYDumpRat  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Amanda, I'd probably just keep an eye on it. It's not making any unusual noises which is the main thing. A lot of the time dust and lint makes it's way to the heating element and gives off a burning smell. Dryer repair men love it because people freak out and call them immediately.
      I don't really know anything about that model but I know that the Simpsons, Electrolux, and Westinghouse models can't catch on fire due to the heating element and lint. There's nothing but metal around it and the clothes are in the bowl totally separate to the heater. The lint just sizzles away giving off a burning smell.
      Most of the time the burning will come and go. But please make sure you monitor it carefully. Like I said I don't know the inner working of that model.
      If it persists you should see if you can take the back off and if you have a leaf blower go to town on it. Even a vacuum cleaner. I do that in my videos all the time. You'll be surprised how much lint can build up in there.
      p.s With the models I mentioned above sometimes the idlers (plastic pulley wheels) lock up and the belt keeps rubbing away at them. This certainly does produce a burning smell. But within no time at all the idler perishes and the dryer breaks down. Believe me you'll know about that if it's happening to your machine. Which is why I think is probably just lint 👍

    Hi ther just a quick question. At 28:42 you showed the lip part for the drum. I had seen a black thing around it and was just wondering if that was some sort of elastic. If so do i need one on my dryer for it to start spinning again. Because i followed all your steps and it still wasnt spining but everything was working fine and i gave it like a little push from the back bolt and that worked but then it stopped when it tried changing directions and stopped spinning entirely. So just wondering do i need that around the drum lip cause my dryer doesnt have it there. Would really like some help please.

      G'day, sorry watching it on my small mobile phone I couldn't see a black ring but I think I've seen black lips on a few drums in the past. It's just discolouration. The front lip that goes into the front slot also goes black alot but that's just from wear I think.
      As for your dryer only spinning when you give it some assistance and stopping when it stops to go in the opposite direction, that sounds very much like you need a new new motor start capacitor. Classic symptoms. Very easy to replace I do it in most of my videos. They only cost me $7 each when I buy 20 at a time. Should cost you $10 - $15 for one on ebay. Best of luck 👍😎

    Hi, great video. We have a Simpson Eziloader 4kg about 12 years old. It has this problem that when the dryer reverses the drum appears to seize up. This happens when it's hot. I've changed the capacitor, checked the belt and bearing and made sure nothing is jamming it up on the inside. It's driving me nuts. Please help. Could the felt "bush" on the back be an issue?

      G'day, sorry for the delayed reply. And yes the rotation of the drum and it chasing direction is definitely due to the timer. If your Simpson is like the on in this video I'd say replace the timer and you'll be fine 👍

      Hi there and so sorry for the delayed reply. Also well done fixing your machine!
      Yep thats a common thing. Happens to a lot of the machines I fix. In fact I'm about to release a video that identifies almost all bad dryer sounds and directs you to other videos I've made showing people how to repair them.
      Anyway I think that vibration sound is probably a loose fan or a fan that has mushroomed and needs to be replaced. I do have videos where I show you this. Actually in the last dryer video I made and uploaded a few weeks ago I go into more detail about why it happens.
      I'll leave you a link to it. Definitely watch the end part. And hey if you have replaced the belt you can definitely fix the fan 👍

    • @DIYDumpRat
      @DIYDumpRat  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi there. Hmmm, It's just a coincidence unfortunately. But it also may not be the heat sensor either. It might be the computer not reading it correctly also. A hard thing to pin down unless you have multiple parts to replace with and trouble shoot. Hopefully you just disconnected the wire leading to the sensor accidentally.
      And yes the best part about Electrolux and Westinghouse fully automatic dryers are that they also have manual timed cycles as well. So you can still use them safely. You just need to choose a 30, 60, or 90 minute cycle. Most of the time I find the timed cycles are a much better option than going fully automatic anyway, as those timed cycle help you save a lot more money in running costs.
      But if you want to look into the heat sensor and what might be happening and how to possibly fix it I did make a video a while ago doing that exact thing to a machine. Here's the link, hope it helps 👍

      Yes mate indeed. That's terrible. I'm not saying it doesn't happen. Almost any electrical device can catch fire. But I'd say most of the time with dryers it's usually more likely the power switch that starts it. It's connected directly onto the plastic interface. I'd say the plastic is more likely to catch on fire than the metal housing. But I could be wrong. The amount of times I've looked inside to see a completely burnt out power switch and blackened plastic surrounding it is amazing. People who owned those dryers were very lucky indeed.

If its locked up definitely. If it's just a bit grindy a lot of the time you can save them by spraying a little WD40 or other form of lube and rotating it. They get grindy due to dust getting inside.

But that usually only happens if the dryer has been dropped slightly. It's normally a flat spot that develops on the lip of the drum that goes inside the door part of the machine. I made a video years ago of the issue if that helps.
      Otherwise I would just turn the drum with the back off, with the drum lying on it's face again and see if you can detect where it's coming from. Sorry I can't be any more help, but well done for getting it back on the road 👍

    Thanks for this video. I am having a problem where the dryer drum does not sit square in the door once the motor spring is engaged. I.e. when I pull the spring into its place, the drum pulls towards me; I am engaging the belt in the exact same manner as the person in this video does at 27:52. It does this with a new belt as well as the old, so the thickness/size of the belt can't be to blame. Belt is wrapped correctly, not twisted, drum is re-inserted into door as per usual, idler pulley moves freely, everything works as expected but as soon as I put the spring in place the drum goes out of plane and refuses to spin freely. My only thought is that perhaps the body of the dryer is no longer square, something has bent out of shape? But it happened suddenly during a cycle, and I've pulled my dryer apart a few times to replace various parts at this point, so I know how to put it back together; this is the first time I've encountered this issue. Can't find any answers anywhere online, and I've probably watched about 20 videos of several different seemingly relevant dryer repair issues at this point. Help!

      Sabrina hi, thanks for your question. Too be honest you have me kinda stumped. Everything I would have said it was you've ruled out. That's only happened to me a couple of times and it was a slightly smaller belt I was trying to fit or I was pulling the tension on incorrectly. I would almost certainly rule out the dryer not being square. It almost sounds like the motor could have dislodged. But I'd really need to see it. When the belt isn't on the motor can you spin the motor with your fingers and it spins freely? I'm kind of grasping but maybe the fan had come off or loose and some how dislodged to motor. Almost sounds plausible seeing it happened in a sudden as you mention.
      I had a dryer the other day where the bowl had come out of the inner shroud lip and was on an angle. I think I put it down to a dodgy idler. So when you pull on the tension the bowl lifts out of the shroud lip right? and when you push it back (stretching the spring) and try to turn it it doesn't turn? I'm going to have to sleep on that one I'm sorry Sabrina. I reckon if I had it in front of me I'd get it in a heart beat. Let me have a think on it. I'm really sorry I can't work this one out straight away.

    • @DIYDumpRat
      @DIYDumpRat  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No problem at all Rhonda, well done for getting that far. What you're describing is completely normal. It happens all the time.
      The black stuff you describe is just the idler after it has melted. They can be a bit stubborn but all it takes is a bit of elbow greese. Just get a good grip on it and turn. Maybe even with two hands. It'll come off. Sometimes the metal core of the idler becomes so fuse to the post that it'll will remain after the plastic body part of the idler comes off. If this happens just grip it with a good set of large pliers and twist. I use multi grips all the time to remove them. They're great. If you still can't get the whole idler to break free by hand a good set of multi grips will definitely do the job 👍
      Just remember that after you do get it off you'll need to really clean the post well, otherwise when you put the new idler on it will freeze up again. I use that 'Orange' citris cleaner stuff from Coles. It works great. Some times you will need to use some wet sand paper to clean it up first before using the Orange (wet 400 grit sand paper) . You want the new idler to guide up and down the post freely with no burs.
      I actually have made a video where that exact thing happened but I haven't uploaded it yet and don't plan to for a little while sorry. But just do what I said above and you'll do fine 👍

      @DIYDumpRat  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Rhonda I just checked another video I made of me doing an idler swap and the same thing is happening but to a lesser degree. Watch this video 🙂
      Now at the end of this video the replacement idler fails as well when I test the machine. This happened because I didn't clean it properly before putting the new idler on. So yeah, make sure you clean it well like I mentioned in my other reply.
