I liked how you emphasize the importance of trust over being likeable while defining the therapeutic relationship. Looking at the therapeutic alliance as a process, not just a good first impression also fits with the asymetrical nature of the relationship. As a therapist, I feel like I am at a spot between a friend and a professional and this definition of therapeutic alliance makes me more relaxed about being authentic and present in sessions while protecting the my borders.

And trust is developed by the patient's experience of you as skilled and competent.

Hello!!! I’ve been binging your videos. I love the way you talk about these subjects in such a simplistic, consistent and direct format. Hope to see new ones soon!!! :)

Great video Patricia! It would be really interesting to hear how you would conceptualise the difference between a patient in transference resistance, and a fragile patient projecting onto the therapist. And how you would proceed in each case. Any chance of video, many thanks!

I am not sure I understand your question. Do you mean, what is the difference between transference and projection? Very important distinction. Happy to do a video on that topic.

Check out my video from January 18, 2021 in which I distinguish between externalization, projection and transference.

Hi Patricia, do you mind sharing some of the research you mention, regarding the development of an alliance being the result of and not necessarily the cause of therapeutic work? Thank you so much! 4:16

I would urge you to do your own research - so important. You can also check out all the research I cite in my books. They are all available on amazon. The last two books are filled with this research data.

5:17 How do tell the difference between a patient who is sitting there passively waiting for you to fix them and a patient who is contemplating?

Response to intervention. Wait and see if the something emerges. You can usually tell by the feel in the room, whether someone is actively engaged in an internal process and needs a couple of minutes to verbalize what is going on, or is shutting down and withdrawing. Watching the eyes and being emotionally attuned with help you with this.
