    Thanks so much! You just gave me the idea I will use on the background of the picture I am working on now. I have seen a gradient sunrise or sunset with colored pencils that is beautiful as well. This looks easier to control if I make a mistake.

    Hi Claire! I have recently purchased pastels. Can you show how to avoid spreading them to your other work? Or can you show how you seal in the background? Or do you use colored pencils and THEN the background?

      Kitcat Gibbons hi! I never use fixative - I’ve had a couple of times when it’s bled the colour through to the other side of the page - prob my fault. I simply separate all my pages with tissue paper xx

    Thank you for this wonderful tutorial! Question... Do you spray fixative or something on your book so that the pastel pigment doesn’t transfer onto the opposite page? Please let me know. Thank you 😊

      Yes - it just a really really light covering xxx

    Hi, Claire! Thanks for another great video. Do you use fixative ? And if so, which one would you recommend?
    Would do a tutorial using oil pastels and shapers also? Sometimes I have a hard time blending oil pastels using my color shapers,
    I tend to give up and use mineral spirits instead.

      Kátia F. Hi! I don’t often use fixative. In my colouring book I always separate finished pages with tissue paper no matter what they’re coloured with. I’ve used fixative for artists edition pages - Frisk. I have to admit I’ve only ever played with oil pastels but I’ve not completed any pieces in them. They blend quite nicely with a little baby oil and smell divine 🤣

    Wow! I've had these Caran d'Ache pastel pencils for half a year now too afraid to use them, thinking that they would disintegrate into dust the second I started using them! I had no idea they could be used in these books! (I have the Magical Jungle). One question here, if you have some time. Can I ask how you sealed the pastel? I bought the Caran d'Ache Fixative Spray, would it be safe to use on your pages? Thank you so so much for making this video!!!

    • @ClaireHoloway
      @ClaireHoloway  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Craftin Kate yes fixative spray - but in small amounts some distance from the page 😃

      Thanks to you for all the information. If we use water, would it stop the powdery material from moving around and making mess on the page, instead of the spray I mean. Thank you very much for the lovely video and comments. 💐🌸💐

    What type of sharpener do you use to get that small point on your pencils? Thank you, very beautiful!

      Mickey Lavoie hi! I actually have an automatic pencil sharpener - there’s quite a few good ones on Amazon xxx

    Hello Claire, thanks for your excellent tuition. I have just bought a set of Faber Castell Pitt Pastel Pencils and find that the colour range of 60 does not really allow for a good gradation of colours. Could you tell me what size set of Caran D'Ache pastel pencils you are using please for this video. I would really appreciate your reply.

    • @ClaireHoloway
      @ClaireHoloway  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Stephanie Gray hi Stephanie - I’m so glad you liked the tutorial. I have the set of 84 CD. They don’t come in as wide range of colours as normal colouring pencils, so you might not find very big sets 🎨🎨

    • @stephaniegray1915
      @stephaniegray1915 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks so much for your quick response. I will have a look at the sets available. I have the 120 Faber Castell Polychromos, which I absolutely love but would imagine that you do not need so many Pastels. I will also look at the Derwent Pastel Pencil range too.

    • @ClaireHoloway
      @ClaireHoloway  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Stephanie Gray the Derwent are great to learn with. Although if you end up doing a lot with pastels and then get more expensive brands you might think them a little scratchy in comparison. But overall I don’t personally think there’s all that much variation in quality between brands for pastel pencils 🙂

    • @stephaniegray1915
      @stephaniegray1915 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Claire, thanks so much. I think I might go with the Derwent Pastels as they are more affordable at the moment, or just the 40 Caran D'Ache if I can find a colour chart for comparison with what I already have.

    Claire, I'm looking for someone to guide me through hydrangea colouring and these little flowers around the page opposite those big flowers you showed shading, you used pink blue green.

    • @ClaireHoloway
      @ClaireHoloway  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      sally ann males if I’m unsure I always try to Google images as research. You’ll see they come in many colours - sometimes multiple colours across one bloom. Usually the petals are lighter at the centre. And I chose to add a deeper shade of the same palette behind the petals :)

    . Hello Claire how are you thank you for such a great video. I'm new to your Channel and I must say you are very informative about the subject matter. I'm looking forward to more videos from you I can learn a lot from you. There was one thing I didn't understand you use the silicone tip brush what were you using to blend it with what solution? I miss that I know you were using pastels but they were pencils I didn't think they were watercolor pencils. Please let me know how are you blending them with what solution? Thank you Miss Claire

    • @ClaireHoloway
      @ClaireHoloway  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Catrena Belgamh hi! Thankyou for the lovely feedback. I have tutorials both for watercolour pencils and pastel pencils. I didn’t use any blending solution for the pastel pencils. The silicone brushes work just fine on their own :)

  • @showorchid72
    @showorchid72 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hi Claire, Thanks for the lovely video! Always insightful as usual! Are the silicon shapers useful to blend soft pastel crayons/ sticks or are they only used for pastel pencils? Also, what brand are you using for these shapers and where did you get them from?

    • @ClaireHoloway
      @ClaireHoloway  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sing Gal glad you enjoyed it!!!! They can be used on all types of pastels 😉 Try the Talens brand on Amazon xxx

    Claire, looking on Amazon at pastel pencils. There are pastel pencils, chalk pastel pencils, soft pastel pencils, oil pastel pencils. Help!!!!! What are they? What did you use in this picture?

    • @ClaireHoloway
      @ClaireHoloway  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Gail Ducrest pastel, chalk and soft are all the same :) stay away from oil based. I have the Caran D’Ache but Derwent also do good sets xx

      Thank you so much. I'm a subscriber, by the way. And we no longer get notifications from TH-cam, in case you communicate with anyone there.

      @ClaireHoloway  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Gail Ducrest hmmmm...... that’s odd you should get notification when I upload new videos?

    • @gailducrest8851
      @gailducrest8851 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A lot of people are not getting notifications. I first heard about it watching Grace a few weeks ago. Then it happened to me. I asked Ann about it. She said "they are having problems...." and we now just go to the channel we are interested in to see what has been posted. But that is sadly haphazard.

    • @ClaireHoloway

      Gail Ducrest that isn’t good - especially when I’m trying to support Johanna market her new book 🙄

    Claire can you please tell me the numbers and/or color names on the Caran D’ache pastels you used so that I can order just those pencils in open stock? I know you said they didn’t all have color names on them so maybe I can order by number, thanks.

    • @ClaireHoloway
      @ClaireHoloway  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      grannieannie40 hi! I didn’t take note of them but this is my best guess from blue to green - cobalt blue 30%, light blue, cobalt blue 10%, 788-661, earth green, verdigris, chromium oxide green, 788-225 xxxx

    I meant sharpener to get that nice point without eating so much pencil., sorry. I have some pastel pencils, I believe they are called the Generals, was my first set and a box of Mungyo. I am hoping for something better. It’s the sharpeners that I haven’t found something that works. I tried the one from China that you dial, some swear by it, I found it to be a piece of junk. If you have something that seems to work well, I am interested in knowing the brand as I have spent enough money on sharpeners that don’t work....
