      @Ebiegberi Adonkie Too bad the historic context they provided is wrong and mixes up and combines the different history of completely different swords. The jian (generic word for any straight sword) is at least 2500 years old, but the tai chi sword design comes around very late in history - around the equivalent of the late middle ages or Renaissance era (within the last 500-600 years). The later sword designs such as the tai chi sword designs had a heavier blade profile that could cut better than other thinner sword designs that were lighter and better for stabbing.

      Didn't have much of a choice, they've covered several famous swords, axes, and Spears. They had to look around for what people really wanted
      Personally, I wish they'd look deeper. Like certain knives, axes, and even custom weapons. I would kill to see the Kujang knife, Dane axe, Leonidas sword from 300, Chinese sword from Dragon Blade (Jackie Chan) and my personal favorite; the Mesopotamian khopesh. Dig deeper guys. You already do awesome stuff

      Nah... The test was cut short, with no kill test. So to make this 10 minute video, they have to fill in extra time by showing the explanations at the beginning. When you see the extra content at the beginning, then you KNOW it will be a shortened test with one element missing, or a blade getting disqualified.

    This is one of the things that is VERY disappointing about this show: they talk about the "lightness of the weapon/blade" being an integral part of the design of the sword, but they never explain how this is achieved. How light does it have to be? How thick should the blade be? How long should it be? How do you need to develop the metal to make it possible to achieve these things? One guy built his sword lighter than the other, and more durable. How? What did he do? Talk about this stuff - IT'S INTERESTING. 🤦‍♀️

    I wish they gave them more time so they can make a perfect blade. Would be cool to see how it would play out

  • @ceratugo

    When you consider the cost of travel, hotel expenses, materials to make the swords 10 grand really isnt a lot

    • @maxlutz3674
      @maxlutz3674 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      For a knife maker the title may be worth more than the 10 grand. Even for the guy with the second place it may be a good advertisement. OTOH having the blade fail in the strength test or even worse the cutting test may really hurt buisness.

    • @kamikaze00007
      @kamikaze00007 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Considering all materials come from the smith and the swords are both kept by the show (either for auction or as a showpiece) I don't think they're actually getting much return aside from bragging rights from the title. Unless the winning blade comes from totally cheap materials and labor costs (including forge resources).

      @ceratugo 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kamikaze00007 yeah I completely forgot about that. If they lose they lose the sword as well

    When you see the extra content at the beginning, then you KNOW it will be a shortened test with one element missing, or a blade getting disqualified.

    I am surprise they didn't disqualify Neil's sword. Not much of a Tai Chi sword. The guard is wrong and there's hardly a pummel. Not to mention it's way too heavy to be a Tai Chi sword. So specs were too off to qualify.

  • @BullsMahunny

    Neil didn't even took this seriously. Made a heavy sword on purpose just because. Still had the time to make racist jokes. Ofcourse he lost.

    Maybe I missed something here, but wasn't one of the basic criteria for the sword to have a "winged" guard? So the one guy with the soup bowl guard shouldn't that have been an automatic disqualification for not meeting the basic weapon parameters?
