Where it really was fun to use was the sports games. There was a baseball and football game which came with an overlay for the key pad. You had to spin the wheel to make your player run - the faster you spun the wheel, the faster your player ran. Also, Rocky was a fun game to use that controller on as well.
Ha... I bought one of these in a pawn shop about a decade ago. Beyond it being for ColecoVision, which due to my report on the history of video games I had done in high school I knew existed, I had no idea what it was for, or how it worked. NOW I DO.
I had one of these! Nearly forgot about it until it came up on my TH-cam feed. It was an odd design for sure. It was better than the original controller but it had its own drawbacks. I recall it required a precarious grip: strong enough to work the joystick with the other hand, but not too tight to press the 4 finger buttons accidentally. And I don’t recall any games that used the scroll wheel. And some games with an overlay for the buttons on top. For me, the novelty of it wore off pretty quickly.
This controller was used for the baseball game, the different colored buttons was for each base you wanted to throw to and it was used to select your pitch. The little gray wheel was used to run the bases. I remember using this for q-bert also I think thats funny.
@@summer20105707 tell him damn it!!! They sold 4-6 million units at 200$ in 3 yrs. Even the low end of that is 800 million in 80s money... n coleco was pumping cabbagr patch dolls, sectaurs, n rambo figure all in the same decade.... n mattel was pumping intellivisions, heman, barbie n hot wheels.... the crash was a crock based on %.... cuz tge industry wasnt prepared for hardware sales to slow after everyone had something.... thats all it was.
Awesome! I have been waiting to see a review of this controller by you for a while. It looks great, but I don't know how suitable it would be for most games. It was originally made for "Super Action Baseball."
Actually it was required to have to play games like super action baseball, football, Rocky and Frontline. And some games like Star Trek and Spy Hunter it was easier to use them over the standard controllers because of the four action buttons.
did you try using the dial? I always wondered what game it was meant for unless they were leaving their options open. I always wanted one of these. I have a collection of my Electronic Games 80's magazines this thing looked super cool. After all these years I finally see it used! I can see howwit'd be awkward. also interesting you ended up using your thumb on the ball top for Frogger. it makes my wonder how the standard CV controller would have worked as a ball top
I had the controllers and lots of Colecovision games as a kid but I never used the dial-thing on any of them. As you mentioned, I think they were anticipating using them in the future (but I can't imagine how/for what).
Just curious if you ever tried the optional extended grip (or whatever it was called) that was supposed to be "for larger hands"? It kind of looks like it'd be hard to even hold onto it without pushing some buttons. I just finally fulfilled one of my childhood dreams by finally buying a colecovision, only to be faced with the same controller woes that I guess every other owner already ran into. lol Currently I'm using an atari Wico joystick on port 1, and a stock coleco controller on port 2 for making pad selections. but that kind of leaves player 2 holding the stick. or rather, with a lack of a stick:P was hoping to pick up one of the wico coleco vision controllers on payday, only to find that by the time I had the money, they'd doubled in price. doh!
Mark, I live out near Pittsburgh, and it would be amazing if you and the Undertow crew did some sort of meet and greet. Plus it would give you an excuse to come back down to Earth for a short while, you know, before the Intergalactic Planetary Law Enforcement Agency finds you and sends you back to the Intergalactic Space Arcade.
Well, the screwball nightmare controller from hell sure didnt help it. Though it's not quite as awful as the Intellivision one. Not sure that it had very good marketing either, though I'm not too clear on that bit.
Centipede Actually is even better than arcade (ignorin it doesn't count with Galaxian/Voices) because if you look at the 3rd mission, the ship has more accurate and new sprite...which looks incredible
It allowed you to run and steal bases during gameplay...It was truly awesome trying to run bases faster by spinning that little wheel as fast as you could! I believe it was used to sprint in Super Play Action Football as well.

Whoever came up with the control pad is a freaking genius.
Honestly, the Coleco Super Action Controller puts me in the mind of the handle of a cutlass in the time of pirates...
We all need , more than ever, more CGR… EDF EDF EDF…
God dang. I remember that controller as a youngster.
Ha... I bought one of these in a pawn shop about a decade ago. Beyond it being for ColecoVision, which due to my report on the history of video games I had done in high school I knew existed, I had no idea what it was for, or how it worked. NOW I DO.
Nice choice of Tchaikovsky music in the background to class things up for the review of THE MOST MANLY GAME CONTROLLER EVER KNOWN, CGR!
I enjoyed your Empire Strikes Back reference right at the beginning. Kudos to you, Mark

Had one. Used to play Rocky and others. Great memories.
Fist fight between Colecovision Super Action Controller and NES Power Glove. Taking all bets.
Nanofuture87 super action controller is a quarter inch of reinforced plastic = victory
Who the fuck needs brass knuckles when you have the COLECOVISION SUPER ACTION CONTROLLER!
This controller was used for the baseball game, the different colored buttons was for each base you wanted to throw to and it was used to select your pitch. The little gray wheel was used to run the bases. I remember using this for q-bert also I think thats funny.
I'm impressed at how good the Colecovision looks! How did that fail? It looks much better then the Atari I was using in 1982.
It didn't fail. Coleco sunk when they made the Adam computer. Adam most likely bankrupted them. But Coleco Vision was a success.

It really didn't fail, it was doing well but ended up a victim of the console crash of 84 and Coleco's poorly thought out Adam computer.
yeah i got one of those and its little keypad buttons on the top suck hard. the controller works great for rocky boxing. good review as always
I used to have this back in the day. It worked great with Rocky. You should try it.
Ah the 1980s, when your video game controller looks like a part fell off the suspension of your El Camino.
CRTs rule!
Awesome! I have been waiting to see a review of this controller by you for a while. It looks great, but I don't know how suitable it would be for most games. It was originally made for "Super Action Baseball."
For starters, the joystick is more comfortable to grip, and the yellow and orange buttons function the same as the two hand controller buttons.
Loved these controllers but I only used them for super action baseball and rocky and a bit of football but that was just messing around then.
You really need to play Rocky with this joystick. Its made for that game.
It didn't really fail. It died along with Atari when the 1983 Video Game Crash happened.
The ColecoVision was like the NeoGeo or maybe the GameCube of it's era.
Man, you must love bar fights. You won't stop bringing it up :)
I love that shirt you're wearing
I remember that controller. It worked very with Spy Hunter.
Review some more Sega Mega Drive games please Mark.
....BUT does it work for the Vectrex..?
Always wanted want one of these as a kid...
Mark, could you create a space portal for us to teleport and play your arcade games?
I love your reviews!
They have Dunkin Donuts in space? Intriguing... another positive for my planned relocation to the galaxy.
Why didn't you show/try any of the colecovision games that had special support for the super action controller?
There're are games that are specially made just for this controller. It works best with those :)
I wish the WII looked like that!!
Actually it was required to have to play games like super action baseball, football, Rocky and Frontline. And some games like Star Trek and Spy Hunter it was easier to use them over the standard controllers because of the four action buttons.
"that thing's strong... just like my coffee." :D
Love the shirt.
Is it a coincidence Rev3 games just mentioned this controller?
Damn. I've missed Classic Game Room...
I feel ya
Oh, I love classic game room :D.
That has one of the old 9pin controller connectors. How does it work with Genesis games?
did you try using the dial? I always wondered what game it was meant for unless they were leaving their options open.

Are these compatible with an Atari, Genesis, or anything else with the same controller adapter?
Do you ever watch Metal Jesus Rocks? I think you guys would be great friends.
Yins guys? Are you from the Pittsburgh area, Mark?
I wonder what Mark did to get banished from Earth?
its sad, but i think i actually have TWO of these cruddy super action controller
I think I liked your old theme music at the start of your videos better, but you are in space now so it needed to change.
Wasn't this controller required to play the Star Trek game on CVIS?
People still make video responses?
you could solder a wii mote pcb in it
The only thing missing from this controller is a muzzle, then it would *really* look like a phaser :)
Well, the screwball nightmare controller from hell sure didnt help it. Though it's not quite as awful as the Intellivision one.
Not sure that it had very good marketing either, though I'm not too clear on that bit.
I wish the Wii remote could look like that!
Great video! I would be sooooo bored at work if it wasn't for you.
Mark likes his coffee just like his men, strong and black.
How come the Atari version of Gorf didn't look like that?!
Centipede Actually is even better than arcade (ignorin it doesn't count with Galaxian/Voices) because if you look at the 3rd mission, the ship has more accurate and new sprite...which looks incredible
I have 2 of these!
What did the roller do on games?
It allowed you to run and steal bases during gameplay...It was truly awesome trying to run bases faster by spinning that little wheel as fast as you could! I believe it was used to sprint in Super Play Action Football as well.
Does it work on an Xbox?
I thought he was going to say something other than coffee.
What were they thinking with the stupid hand-guard? It's entirely pointless..
I don't know? Maybe he upset his neighbors? But that's hard to imagine.
Looks more like a romulan disruptor to me. :-)
It's made for the baseball game.
mildheadwound and the boxing game
@@patsfan4life and Spy Hunter and Frontline and Star Trek and Football and Soccer and others I'm probably forgetting.
Kinda looks like one of the guns in Halo.
This thing looks awesome - but the original phone controller is better.
Awesome
I have rebuilt my controler it works fine I never liked the colecovision controler it was too big .
dunkin donut in the intergalatic space arcade?
Super knuckle duster.
i got these stupid things from ebay a couple of years ago....didnt work very well at all!!
Nintendo came up with the D-pad (fact)
I thought he was already in space.
Games look miles better than 2600 for sure
Mark please review your hair.
