    While I don't think that porn is the significant factor/problem for a lot of people, I 100% agree with the general sentiment. I'm pretty hooked on easy and cheap content consumption with TH-cam and Twitch, and what I experience is pretty much what other dopamin/reward factor videos say as well: engaging in such easy instant gratifications made it more difficult for me, over time, to focus on monotonous or boring tasks for a longer time or exert way less effort to overcome challenging tasks. The solution would be to distance yourself, or at least regulate, engagement in such behaviours, and without so many dopaminergic activities, over time you would start to feel more enjoyment and fulfillment from the more boring tasks that you actually want to do.

    • @EdwardLabarcaDev
      @EdwardLabarcaDev  7 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

      You're right - I'm directing the attention to porn in specific because of how deeply damaging it is towards your dopamine receptors and ultimately has other dangerous effects such as the corruption of how relationships are viewed, loss of testosterone (in men), time consumption, and spiritual health*
      But this is all applicable to 'instant gratification' conent as well. Phone addiction in particular is harrowing and ruins the attention span, creates dependency, and elevates behaviors associated with addiction. All of this to is to say that if you catch yourself in a constant loop of doomscrolling or getting heavily distracted, you need to find a way out of it ASAP. I just really hope the video helps anyone who needs help developing the correct habits to avoid this vice.
      *Spiritual Health in the context of Christianity refers to your relationship with God and engaging in activities that go against the divine law (also known as sin) is the quickest way to place yourself in a perilous situation. This isn't a religious debate, but simply put - depending on your beliefs - the implications of a healthy spiritual life also is heavily correlated to general fulfillment and purpose; characteristics that propel you to perform better in your day to day life.

    Really strong talk - I haven't even made a game in ages but I think this applies to a lot of my life. Thanks for making it, and also that's a really impressive working history in the description!!
    I'm 17 so a lot of my friends use social media, and in person they'll be like "hey you haven't sent me any tiktoks recently" (I quit using that app). Same thing with instagram. I have a huge problem with doomscrolling but I can't bring myself to delete the app. It's a shame because I know I can be so much more productive without it.

    • @EdwardLabarcaDev
      @EdwardLabarcaDev  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@px8 Peer pressure is a real thing and it doesn’t have to be active peer pressure either. Being tied to Instagram/Tiktok for the sake of keeping contact with certain friend(s) is a real reason why many of us have it in the first place.
      You can choose to limit your use of this (as you’re suggesting what you’re currently doing) or eliminate it completely, but like all habits, take baby steps to make your exit plan work.
      In this video, the “Say no to the brownie exercise” is an ‘easy’ example of building the ability to say no/start rejecting things that do not serve you.
      Please remember that we are social creatures and need to interact often. That being said, I do think that social media has replaced how we view social interactions as a whole, so you can also create the change you want to see. If you haven’t done this yet, attempt to plan hangout sessions for you and your friends when you catch a break from work/school/project. This’ll also help you build the ability to have deeper bonds with your friends and can even help you ‘exit social media’ while looking forward to your next outing.
      All in all, we want to minimize our distractions as much as possible but we are also human with wants and needs too - so make sure you’re putting your best interests first (even if it requires a bit of sacrifice here and there).
      Thanks for the comment! I hope this helps!

    Good video i have a question is it possible to get a game dev job with a ME degree

    • @EdwardLabarcaDev
      @EdwardLabarcaDev  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Hey, thanks!
      To answer your question:
      Short answer: Absolutely!
      Long answer: My background is actually in Mechanical Engineering and with a strong desire to work with video games, I realized it would be extremely difficult to do without any programming experience. Fun fact - I did not take a single programming class during my ME degree nor did I operate with any other software, game engine, or tool that directly contributes to video games.
      Regardless of this, I do think that having a degree in any engineering field is a massive benefit because you are naturally surrounded by complex projects with multiple-focuses, you directly work with design-based skills, and you also are forced to have a great understanding of time management to properly progress through your work. ME's specifically have the benefit of having exposure with 3D modeling thanks to CAD and also carry the benefit of understanding physics, complicated math formulas, and even the fundation of vector mechanics which unironically gets used a lot in games that have a focus on 3D mechanics.
      That being said, how did I land a job at a Game Studio + what can you do to get a job as a Game Dev?
      Well, just like any professional game developer, coder, or contributor to a studio - you first need a portofolio. Whiel you can mix your technical engineering projects in your resume/portfolio (like I did here: drive.google.com/file/d/1UHZP90EvIVITIGvrsBYINID7GnjiAkBh/view ) you want to start building games on your own. The scale/scope doesn't matter as long as:
      1. You have atleast one completed game (and prove it with a launch/store page)
      2. You can demonstrate your technical profieciency behind the game(s) you made
      and 3. You can leverage a main focal point such as coding systems, designing tools for production, and/or refractoring/troubleshooting expert.
      So, for example:
      1. DodgeKing V1.0.0 was the completed game with storepage proof ( store.steampowered.com/app/2086270/DodgeKing/?beta=1 )
      2. (On Page #9 of the portfolio link, you can read the "developer impact" section to see the technical proficiency behind it)
      and 3. All Unity projects in the portfolio focus on coding systems - even the other ME projects assess the importance of system-based approaches.
      Now, bare in mind I was able to do this without any coding experience so I started off with a massive project in Unity and prototyped this game: ( th-cam.com/video/QxUl2AHPntg/w-d-xo.html ) It took about 1.3 years of me just fooling around with the engine while completing my studies. After this, I ended up making my first commercial game, DodgeKing V1.0.0 which took 90 days to make. Key word: 90 days - the game was super small and while the quality was lack-luster, the entire process of making and launching a game taught me fundamental skills to developing a gmae in a surpressed amoutn of time. Lastly, I poked around a few game jams and other Unity projects to prove to recruiters that I understand the engine at the deeper levels that the actual job requires me to know.
      That being said, depending on the job you're applying for, make sure you learn your engine (Whether Unity, Unreal, or others, base your portfolio off of using that tool)
      So when prompted by a recuirter "Hey, we're interested in interviewing you BECAUSE you have a portofolio that highlights your skills," thats when you defend your skills by talking about how you were able to implement features, code, and design approaches for your game(s).
      tl;dr - the degree doesn't matter - it's the experience. ME degrees are huge since they demonstrate a lot of engineering-based skills that highlight your ability ot work on complicated projects. As long as you have a portofolio of games/areas of where you want to work at with proof that you actually understand what the job is asking for, your odds drastically increase. Also - game dev jobs is a very saturated market - stand out by showcasing your technical proficiency as quickly as possible.
      I hope this helps! If you have anymore questions, feel free to ask!
      Thanks!

      thanks so much for this answer i genuinely didn't expect this much help thank you I'm in ME right now 3 Year and I feal absolutely lost i want to drop out but I'm in too deep, you just gave me some much needed motivation brother I did have a mobile game that had 50k downloads on a different platform (not Google play) it was a competition don by a university where i live and it was removed after the competition it didn't win and some gamejam games do you think that could be enough to get a foothold also I guess I have to learn unity or unreal I used Godot for it

      New Link incase the other one still fails: drive.google.com/file/d/1UHZP90EvIVITIGvrsBYINID7GnjiAkBh/view?usp=sharing
      And yes! 3rd-4th year is the hardest because you're too deep to pivot elsewhere but it's also a privildege because you're bound to complete your degree and can land a normal enigneering job to rack up funds for supporting your development journey. Do not give up on it since Thermo, Fluids, Mechanics, and Machine Design are the last filters you'll fight before capstone. Stay strong!

    • @EdwardLabarcaDev
      @EdwardLabarcaDev  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@HexY------ Also - regarding your current portfolio -
      50k downloads implies that you made a very appealing mobile game, meaning when you put this in your portfolio, you will automiacally draw attention to it. Here, you can talk about the context of its design inception (the university competition) and also feature your game jam projects too. I advertise you to look into Unreal / Unity (both would be ideal, just remember that Unreal has a bigger job market for AAA studios while Unity has a mix of lower-tier Studios / lots of Engineering Companies not related to game-dev use Unity) - as for Godot, it's going to be just a bit tougher since it's now kicking off to be a viable engine for larger studios to work with.
      Just like anything you do in your own life, always take time to research the market because there might also be roles inside the game dev industry that you simply amy not be aware about. Based off of what tools, skills, and requirements they're asking for, build a portfolio based off of that to continue building your career capital/leverage towards that job.

    - PersonOne is successful, hitting every deadline, building their career, even contributing to their 401k. And all they do is relax with a movie once a month! If you know what kind of movie
    --- Then there’s PersonTwo, a wrestling superstar, making 500k, supporting his family, even opening a restaurant. When he won the title, he posted a photo with a cigar, and people applaud him and some was mad at him.
    Why does PersonOne get so much more hate than PersonTwo?
    Even though they both take one little break each month, somehow PersonOne gets torn down for it while people just cheer on others for worse behavior. The double standards are ridiculous!"
