Read William Mann's book Kate. It says that their relationship was only sexual in the beginning. She was primarily lesbian. He dealt with homosexual desires in conflict with his devout Catholicism. The book is very readable and well documented, looking much closer at Hepburn's life and activities beyond acting and Tracy.
I feel he was really ashamed of being an homosexual, that was not accepted at the time by the Catholic Church . Hence the binge drinking, really heavy drinking on week ends when he was not working. He despised himself for "his unnatural desires" indulged in them with strangers , thought that his son's deafness was punishment on him for his sexual urges, worked till he was used up and died. Katherine was a good friend, took much abuse from him, but it was only friendship, nothing else.
Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn ever had an affair. That was started by the studio room is to prevent any rumors of Spencer Tracy being a homosexual and Katharine Hepburn being a lesbian both by the way which were true from coming to public light. The marriage that Spencer Tracy had with his wife was a lavender marriage because Spencer Tracy's wife was also a lesbian. They lived on the estate with George cukor who was also homosexual. The so-called romance between Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn was an entirely fictional story developed to protect the studios actor and actress.
Tracy and his wife did NOT live on Cukor's property! They had a ranch. The Hepburn relationship was completely hidden, which is a very ODD choice of a beard. He was married until he died. Why have a secret, hidden relationship with a "lesbian" to cover up being gay? (Oh, and he was a notorious womanizer which was well documented, even by the FBI.) This relationship was not breathed a word about until after he died. I highly doubt he was playing the long game, hoping it to be revealed after his death, using a secret relationship with a lesbian to hide a supposed homosexuality. People need to use some common sense.
67??!!!!! Way too young to die, he took to drink in a heavy & bad way. He would go to Brooklyn Heights to the Hotel, I forget the name, it’s housing for NYU now had an enormous pool. The Saint George or Gregory? He’d check in & just get wasted, this went on for a good while. He supported his wife’s work with the deaf & technically stayed married to her. I like, Mr Tracy & he paid for any transgressions by his guilt. Since his wife understood I think there was no harm done. I hope he is in Peace with the Lord.
money and fame has its ups and downs, and the ups are the freedome to live your life the way you want, even if it has to be discrete, and marriage as often is the case is like wearing a suit for a man or a beautiful dress for a woman it may not be what you really want but it's expected and some things back then were hard to avoid ......
The only thing MORE disappointing than the smug, smarmy, prurient tone of the narrative is the self-righteous tut-tutting of the holier-than-thou crowd. To say nothing of the conjectures about the sexual preferences of Tracey and/or Hepburn. Spencer Tracey was a very fine actor, with a multitude of exceptional performances that have marked the history of American cinema. He was also a very troubled soul and seems to have wrestled with his own personal demons for much of his life at a time when therapy was unheard of. More to be pitied than condemned.

Agree totally the extent in which the studios controlled Evey aspect of theirs and others lives is truly staggering.
