Arjun Aneja Because no matter how good the hardware is in a small camera module, it must be a thin and not as intrusive to be considered a smartphone. With that being said, the AI and software in the camera configuration must be up to par as well to accommodate for the relatively small camera module. RED doesn’t have to worry as much about software in their bigger cameras because software doesn’t really matter in big form factors and all that matters is hardware. For RED to compete in the smartphone camera competition, they must have to focus on software as well because that MATTERS a lot especially in a lot of these recent flagships released this year.
It’s not their camera, believe it or not. Yikes. They likely went all in on trying to make the camera themselves but then waited till the last possible second to realize that they couldn’t get it done within a reasonable cost, so their backup plan of using a third-party camera sensor was so poorly planned given how much faith they had in themselves to make the sensor themselves that them switching to a Sony sensor was a rushed decision. Their Finance team likely convinced them that it was better for them to go ahead and release it to recoup some money to put towards its sequel instead of pumping endless dollars into polishing what was looking to take way longer than originally planned; and their Marketing team probably spoke up about how harmful to their image releasing it now would be, but Management probably told Marketing to just push the idea that the phone’s primary purpose isn’t as a stand-alone device but one with modules that it interfaces with. But the Management failure is that those modules aren’t ready yet, but they released the phone anyway, all because they were bleeding money trying to get their amazing sensor technology shrunk down to fit into a smartphone. This isn’t an excuse - it’s just an explanation of how things likely went down.
Talk about a complete failure. They should have teamed up with LG to make a phone. Let red make the camera and the camera app and let LG make the rest of the phone.
I have the phone and can tell u how the screen differs from the 3DS etc. the traditional 3D screen can only display 2 images being left and right and only in landscape mode. The screen on the red hydrogen one displays 4 simultaneous images. This 4 view/hologram is also visible in portrait and landscape unlike the older tech you mentioned. It’s always a wow factor looking at the quality of photos it produces, the 3D effect is crazy good and the battery lasts on average 3-4 days from full charge. It’s an excellent phone. Absolutely no regrets.

This is a total failure with no redeeming features, let me tell you that, and in your review you failed to say things as they are.
Dude, he didn't read the manual, nor did he take a second to setup the camera or see its features, or show us the video footage, or it's recording resolutions. It's the video that is deeply flawed, not the phone. I mean, it's a Red phone, with a huge camera, and he paid no respect to its features.
@@stevenwest1494 well then that would be his fault to no review the phone properly. As it was shown on the video, the results were totally disappointing.
This phone is $149 on eBay (refurbished). Really good deal. Really good phone. Kinda wish there was official Android update to 10 though. Right now it's on 8.1. don't want to risk jail breaking.
so? pixel 3 used sony sensor, oppo and vivo also used the sony sensor, and of course sony themselves used their sensor. did u see any of these phone having a crappy image like a 2012 smartphone camera to you?
@@caerxm Red is a really good camera company. The silicon sensors they make for their full size cameras are absolutely the best. They have achieved their perfection by designing everything about their cameras. When Red said a phone would be coming, people believed the camera would be crazy. The Sony sensor is great, I have no problems with it, however the Red phone should have done something they are extremely good at.
I daily drive this, in 2021. I absolutely love it and there's not a phone I'd rather have to be perfectly honest with all of you. I understand it's shortcomings but it truly is great.
I think not many people know that this is from a camera company that makes one of the best video cameras on the market (given that the camera doesn’t overheat). Thanks for the review. I love the signature red dot on the back.
I can't believe all of the TH-camrs who reviewed this phone and talked about the 3D screen never mentioned the LG Optimus 3D that was released in 2011 which had 3D display and I believe it's camera was even capable of recording in 3D.
There are quite a few 3D phones after the Optimus 3D too, it failed once already and now they come with the same tech again and don't really improve it.
What's the bit depth? High bit depth images tend to map to rather flat looking images on a standard display prior to processing because they have a lot of range in the hilights and shadows. Didn't seem like there was much detail, though...
Yes lol. But they had a camera on each corner. 4 front facing cameras. So the effect could be viewed at any angle. I'm guessing this front camera tracks one face and applies the effect accordingly.
Red is a company that overprices everything Though you can't complain about the quality of their cameras But yeah, save yourself some money and get a pocophone
@@AFTERSHOCK-bh7hh They might as well skip it, if they are reluctant to spend what I can only assume will be less than a dollar per phone to include a quick charger. I mean I can get a quick charger for $2-3 on ebay with shipping. The Apple is rotten and has a worm in it.
But, like... how is RED gunna release a smartphone with modularity and not release the modules? Also, the fact that the cameras are not made from RED is just mind boggling to me. Need I mention that, by the time those modules come out, the 835 processor is going to be so outdated (it already is). It seems like they focused way to much on the holographic thing and really neglected the other aspects of the phone. Definitely a flop for $1,300... even if the camera module is ridiculously amazing.
CMShortboy By modular they were envisioning use with their cameras and remote operation. Including cinema drone. Instead of needing a external monitor or for the focus puller, they can just sync up the phone for real time without needing the whole on set directors monitor rig. Its just not there. It would have been better as a camera device than smartphone. Especially with Android. Barf.
This is poor management, not a lack of wanting to do the very things you’re saying they should’ve done. The plan was for the phone’s primary purpose to be the whole modules ecosystem thing, but the holographic thing was likely only there as a means to attract the non-filmmaking, relatively ordinary consumer. They likely went all in on trying to make the camera themselves (trying to jam their familiar tech into a tiny package) but then waited till the last possible second to realize that they couldn’t get it done within a reasonable cost in time, so their backup plan of using a third-party camera sensor was so poorly planned given how much faith they had in themselves to make the sensor themselves that them switching to a Sony sensor was a rushed decision. This isn’t an excuse - it’s just an explanation of how things likely went down: well-intentioned and ambitious vision with poor management of juggling the twists and turns along the way.
I think with respect to the modules , they were trying to achieve a similar design to the Lenovo Moto Z which has a lens and a projector module. It doesnt seem to be a good effort for the price. As for the 3D, it's a good idea, when the technology becomes advanced to create a robust, easily viewed screen ABOVE the primary screen. It's not really scifi, but the computing power to do it is astronomical. Just look at the Occulus or even PSVR (pro not standard PS4). And that is now, not a decade from now when it possibly will leave the screen as a true hologram. So hurry up and wait, we will get it, just a question of when?
835 outdated? The fuck? It's not beans new but for a phone there is nothing it can't do. Getting caught up in the benchmarks much? How much power do you need to check the internet or make a call/text? There aren't any games that are so demanding that even one gen back from the 835 will tax it.
I have a 3D TV....i never use it and have maybe used it like 10 times in all the years I've had it. 4DX is the real 3D experience. With the moving seats, wind, water, and 3D its epic!
I thought the HTC Evo 4G delivered impressive 3D for a first gen device considering its terribly low resolution, even though some claimed it only worked if looking directly at it(low 3D viewing angle).
I really like the Aesthetics of the phone, all the other smartphones look identical. But the 3D stuff is very gimmicky remember when HTC did this exact thing and made the Evo 3D? That didn't really take off and I don't really know anyone that uses their 3DS with the 3D mode. 3D TV's never took off, why take a failing concept that has been consistently proven not to catch on and try to market it? They should have put a really nice 4K display and actually their cameras not the same ones every other phone use, especially since they are a camera company. The sensors that are in there are like Sony or something you only get an actual red sensor if you get the attachment that they haven't made yet. Also how do you mess up front facing speakers?
@@headbangerdnb I haven't seen anyone talking about It, but red isn't the "camera" company most people have in mind. They are not like sony or nikon or canon. They are along with Arri the biggest digital film camera providers in Hollywood. Red makes cinema cameras not stills cameras. You'd think they are the same thing but they are not. No red camera can take pictures for example. Furthermore, what people are generally looking for in a smartphone camera is completely different to what red is used to. People value a sharp (artificially most of the time) and saturated (no matter if the colours have clipped or not) image. Red cameras don't sharpen in camera and are mostly used to be shot in a "flat" color profile (very low saturation and contrast) in order to be graded by a colorist to liking. I could go on but you guys get the idea.
I prefer the boxed corners. I wedge the lower right corner into my hand when holding my phone and the curvy ones slip a little bit. Also, it is better for leaning it up against things. I also like somewhat of a bezel on the sides so that my hand doesn't press the screen when one handing it.
No company that is reasonably old has ever put out a good product every time. Ever. Including Apple, Google, Nokia, Samsung, Boeing, NASA, every fashion and clothing company in existence- everyone. The same goes with people, as well. If you’re looking for perfect, this isn’t the world for you.

@@stevenwest1494 well then that would be his fault to no review the phone properly. As it was shown on the video, the results were totally disappointing.

@@caerxm Red is a really good camera company. The silicon sensors they make for their full size cameras are absolutely the best. They have achieved their perfection by designing everything about their cameras. When Red said a phone would be coming, people believed the camera would be crazy.

There are quite a few 3D phones after the Optimus 3D too, it failed once already and now they come with the same tech again and don't really improve it.
and Htc evo 3d also
This 3D is different
The verge did mention that LG phone.
The HTC Evo 3D did it better, and did 3d video as well.
What's the bit depth? High bit depth images tend to map to rather flat looking images on a standard display prior to processing because they have a lot of range in the hilights and shadows. Didn't seem like there was much detail, though...

The camera is garbage it's only a Sony sensor
But does it have a second notch on the side bezel?
Is that not what that Amazon phone that failed did? lol
Yes lol. But they had a camera on each corner. 4 front facing cameras. So the effect could be viewed at any angle. I'm guessing this front camera tracks one face and applies the effect accordingly.

The 835 isn't already outdated, the exaggeration is real.

"Hal, build a good phone!" "I'm afraid I can't do that Dave."

Remember the Nokia Lumia 1020*? Looks like it tho.
Being a camera company, I think they were going for making the next Lumia 1020, but failed. The 1520's camera was nowhere near as good as the 1020.
@@headbangerdnb Ohyeah, I meant the Lumia 1020. That beast had that insane camera.
I prefer the boxed corners. I wedge the lower right corner into my hand when holding my phone and the curvy ones slip a little bit. Also, it is better for leaning it up against things. I also like somewhat of a bezel on the sides so that my hand doesn't press the screen when one handing it.
