thanks Donnie I just got me a 2024 yz250fx I just got done with the break in part I am going to warm it up today and change the oil I am new to Dirtbike racing in trail racing coming off of my Honda TRX 450R I chose the 250 over the 450 YZ because I just feel like a 250 is more then enough power. and I am thankful. Just an FYI, in case you're interested, Gold Plug in MT makes a nice neodymium drain plug and RecMx has a nice billet oil filter cover. They have a location in Mooresville.
I just bought a 24. Loving the bike and getting the oil changes down thanks to your help. Two questions: A) I saw when you flashed the app that you had 46 hours on the piston but the recommendation was 12:30 - what’s your thoughts there? B) do you torque the bolts to spec or just eyeball it?
How often have you done the timing chain? the manual is calling for every 12.5 hours, if you do, change it could you do a video on it? I like your delivery of content. There are no videos on this common maintenance procedure for the newer 250s which I found surprising since there have been so many failures of the timing chain, and it is such a regular wear part
Thanks for watching! I haven't done a timing chain yet. If I do I will make a video. I have 8 close friends who ride YZ250FXs and 50-75 others I race with in the various series and we've never had a timing chain failure. I put 140 hours on my 2021 bike and only shimmed the valves. I know others who have 200-300 hours on these engines with nothing other than valve shims and oil changes.
Good vid dude. I am amazed how similar the Yam and Kaw are in some ways. Looks like the same filter and screen setup. The sight glass is in a diff spot though.
Just came across tour channel and I'm enjoying the vids! I have a 2020 yz250fx. I like the look of your bike! I just got the metallic grey plastics kit from Acerbis. Are your graphics custom designed or did you just buy them? Great channel!
Enjoyed the video, I just acquired a 22' YZ250F last week so, your video was very timely. Can I suggest you do a video on the maps you utilize for your racing and single-track riding?
Man you couldn't have posted this at a better time, I'm about to do the first change on my 23 yz250fx and am a total newb. Would you recommend synthetic over a blend?
I have run synthetic before but prefer the Yamalube AP with the Rekluse clutch. I think frequent changes and keeping the oil clean is more important than expensive oil. Just my opinion. You can’t go wrong with synthetic if that’s what you choose.
Don’t know about the Yamaha but when I used synthetic oil in my Kawasaki the clutch started slipping?? I always just used conventional oil and change it often
Is it that important to check the pressure bolt after changing the oil ? When i’m done with the oil change, i start my bike and check if oil is seeping out a bit of the pressure bolt, if it does, all is good :)
I should have mentioned that in the video. The manual says to do it but I’ve done so many oil changes that usually don’t. Loosening the bolt just verifies that you haven’t done anything incorrectly that would inhibit oil flow.
This is random but what is the clear hose hanging down in the front of the engine? is that the crankcase breather? I'm new to yamahas, thinking about one for my next bike...
@@DirtBikingwithDonnie thank you! do you know if the crankcase vents to airbox? that's my preference. KTM 4 stroke XC bikes vent to ground and can suck water if you get stuck in deep water. not good
Hey Donnie, big fan. 😁 I just got a brand new yz250fx and I don’t know hat to do about the break-in process… I’ve read online that some people don’t do anything, others take it slow for a bit, and others use the manual. What’s your thoughts?
I just did the first ride on mine. Instruction from my engine / suspension guy was to put an easier ride on it with out maxing out rpm’s but also don’t baby it. It needs to go through the rev ranges and the rings needs to seat with the cylinder. I think some over think it, ride the bike, put a couple heat cycles on it, don’t baby it to much but don’t bounce it off rev limiter and you should be good
I’ve always just ridden normally during the break in period. I don’t get near the rev limiter but I don’t get there very much ever. The most important part of break in for these engines is doing the oil change after 1 hour. The screen and the filter will be covered with goo (maybe assembly lube) and you’ll want to get that out of there. Thanks for watching!
Hey mate how are ya riding because I was going g to get this bike but my mate said I need to replace the oil every 5 hours !!!!! I plan to do dune riding and trails and jumps ... let me know what ya think k !!!!
No, the capacity is .75 liters or 750 ml with the filter change. I typically put in .8 liters or 800ml due to the extra capacity or my Rekluse clutch cover. 4:19 in the video.
Yeah, 12.5 hours for a piston is a strange recommendation from Yamaha. I guess if I was on the rev limiter all the time it might make sense. I put 140 hours on my 2021 and it never lost power, never burned oil or any other issue. I shimmed the valves once. I bought all the parts to do the top end but never did it. I have friends that have run them well over 200 hours on the original top end. I will likely buy a new bike before it’s needed on this one.
@@daneheinrich2690 I've got almost 300hrs on my 2022 yz450fx piston and the valves were in spec at 250h. The app works great to tune the bike. I put the full FMF ti exhaust and it adds a LOT of power with the right tune.
