There is one part in the book where Frodo comes across an enchanted stone throne where someone could project their vision across the lands of Gondor, and when the magic of that chair is combined with the ring, that is the one time where Sauron actually gets a lock on its usage, but that's more because of the throne's magic rather than the ring.
