I love modern tech, and I always find myself getting excited about the next big thing. But I love to spend time outdoors and I find making things myself just to be so much more satisfying. I'm only fourteen, but someday I hope to earn enough money to buy a couple acres of land close to a city, so that I could have a space with no modern tech and just pure nature.

Its purpose is for cutting not smashing. Your tool is super useful. Using the right tool for the right job is something we should learn.
make a modern kydex sheath if you want to EDC stone knives. seen some people do it, having a fixed blade steel knife and a stone knife side by side in kydex sheaths as those don't down down or get under you. mind you it was butchers that did this as they just liked stone and obsidian knives more for skinning and scraping.
I love this stuff for some reason. Thinking about making one of these and possibly a bow.

I'm very much into the "native indigenous white man" area of research, esp in view of current times, as I believe it's a very little known and barely taught if at all to the upcoming generations.
I'm one who believes survival and bushcraft is a very pacifying and unifying hobby that can heal all kinds of society hurts. Each culture can teach others their own unique survival skills in their own environments, and I support greatly this channel as being part of the ancient European (yes even tho you're in the US!) indigenous bushcrafting and survival skills. It's amazing how our forefathers were able to use this gear to take down the giant ice age big game of their time! I just wish here in the UK we would be permitted bow and spear hunting. It's crazy that we can go out with an air rifle which is not guaranteed at all to bring down the game like a good hit with a decent poundage bow and arrow would. We have some mixed up people making the hunting laws here!
I agree I feel here in the UK we never went away from the old no hunting deer in the kings forest, like you can hunt but you need to be rich, own a house you can install a safe into, be in a social group that owns large quantities of land with animals, and I can't go bag a muntjac or fish with a net even though private companies can go scrape the channel pair trawling, it's a joke
Although it's probably because if most of the population is in the cities they're not gona care about reform, and all they hear about with hunting is the fox hunt they're only presented with a self indulgent and controversial image of hunting
@@jackp492 fr omg it’s actually disgusting here in England they can chop down whole woods for logging n agricultural fields but I can’t chop 1 tree for a bow truly a shame
@@flinteyesonofsun614 I say just go do it fella, or better yet, look in the hedgrows for ash, it grows nice and straight to get up through the brambles and hawthorn and nettles and such, go knock at the house of the place that owns the otherside of the hedgrow, they'll probably be bemused at your request but unlikely to refuse it. Ive softened on my views expressed in my earlier comments, we have all inherited this whack system, and people are not charitable to a nebulous other group mentality, one to one though, almost everyone you come across is amenable, just like you are.

Should make sure that people know that knapping should only be done outdoors or with a vacuum shroud. Can cause lung issues with small bits as my friend found out. Carving on bone/antler also should be done in an outdoor area with good air flow or with vacuum.
Fr this should be stated but then again anyone doing this stuff inside soon realises the mess that is made lol
Yeah a lot of people are unfamiliar with the use of stone tools. An tend to over look the purpose on why they were made. Which was to butcher meat and process softer materials like plants

Do you have a preference for single or double edged stone knives? It seems that double side is the default for stone knives and i was curious if there was a practical purpose over that as compared to a single.

Hi Ryan.. Do you have a video on how you make your hafting glue? Theres a million videos on youtube, but you really put your stuff to the test, so I know your recipe is good
I'd love to hear your thoughts on how the corner tang knife was hafted. If hafted at all. One of my favorite theories is that it was tethered to a piece of cordage. Tied at the tang to the wrist. Any thoughts on this?

Great video. I really have no idea what I’m getting into here, but I bought a knife at an antique store ‘cuz it looked cool and the price was right. I can send you pictures if you like, but the distinguishing characteristic of the piece is that it’s a translucent amber color stone with areas that are red. Initially I thought the red was painted on, but held to the light you can see that the color runs through it. Do you happen to know what I’ve got here?

I've just found interest in kidnapping, and I have a lot to catch up on, I'm curious, how does it perform as a skinner, aka cutting hide. Of course, I haven't seen a skinning video yet, and not sure yt would allow such.
Hey Gil, my question for you is if you know or think it's possible to baton wood with a denser river stone that has been pecked...instead of using conchoidal fracturing stones like dacite or obsidian.

How do you spot the stone that you can work into a knife? And have you ever been able to sharpen it with another stone? I'm trying not to buy the tools I need but make them but I don't hunt so idk how I'd come across some antler. Thx for the video.

Have you ever experimented with slate or shale for blades or arrowheads? Seems like it could be a decent alternative.I believe the Inuit frequently used slate For tools.
Cameron Pain shale and slate won’t work for knapping. They’re layered, not homogeneous like chert.
@@gsnicholas8522 Yeah your right. The way you make tools from slate/shale is grinding on a abrasive material like sandstone.
definitely more of a grinding material. I have a buddy in the North west that does slate grinding

Chopping with a metal knife isn't a good idea either, if you want to keep a good sharp edge. Thin metal edge bends pretty easy. I'm always ready to learn and you do a good job teaching. Thanks.

Northern Cali around Mt Shasta and Lassen Peak, central Oregon are good areas to get some.

not the knapped knife, but a single clean flake will shave hair.
So what he is sayin is that stone/obsidian knives are hard but brittle, they are very effective to a certain extent this is why Indians/caveman etc. made bigger chunks of blade attached to wood for like an axe
