Making a Bee Hive Escape Board

  • An escape board funnels the bees out of the hive and once out, they can't find their way back into the narrow opening to get back into the hive. It is useful to clear a hive of bees so that you can then take the box and process the honey. Otherwise you would have to take all the frames out, shake and/or sweep the frames of bees, and put them in another box. In the process the bees get pretty riled up and it can take them several days to get their production going again.
It's a simple project, and a welcome tool for any beekeeper.

Are you sure this isn’t a wooden flux-capacitor?

Great video. Your method is the easiest way to build it from scratch that I've seen.
I think your escape board is upside down. From what I've seen the triangle side goes on the bottom but I could be mistaken.
    Thanks for the tips.

The escape board is usually put in under the honey super and it would be screen side down. But in the video I wanted the bees out of the entire hive. They had gotten into a hive where I didn't want any bees.

A bee diode. Interesting. If they have to be out overnight, do they have somewhere else to go? Can the queen get out? Thanks much and thumbs up to crush a troll.

In my case I didn't want them to go back into the box which is why I boarded the entrance up at the bottom. It's supposed to be empty. Once they leave they will all go back to their proper hive.
Normally you use an escape in between boxes, and it would be upside down to what I have it here. That way the bees get out of the top box(es) and into the bottom box(es) and can't return up top. Because up top is where the honey is and you need to clear the honey boxes of bees just before harvest.
The queen normally won't be there but if by chance she was, she could get out no problem.

@@OpenWoodShop Thanks for the explanation. I didn't know that the honey was in the upper part of the hive.

They don't go out overnight, they move down to keep the brood warm. They form a ball in the lower boxes that contain brood and then can't find their way back up as the hive warms .

Wish you had given the lengths of the inner triangle pieces, the most important part. And the hole i suppose is 4 ins?,

I believe that hole was 2 1/8" because that was the only hole saw size I had at the time. I just made it so that it 'looked good'. I never really measured it myself. Thanks.
