Guys the reason he kept falling was because his body was weakening. If you read the lore, "Mortals who dare to venture to these dismal shores will slowly have their life force stolen away from them." So this kid was already dying when he left the barrier to chase after dad. His final fall was actually symbolic of him dying I think. And because the isles traps your soul, he doesn't realise that.
I can't stand the comments that say "omg he is so stupid for falling so much, it is so cliché". But it is almost humanly impossible to survive the shadow isles without knowledge of the place or without any preparations.

From everything I've seen and noted here, it looks like Thresh got him while he was trying to get back to his feet.
no, its just that his strenght and life were being slowly drained as soon as he left the magical barriers to chase after his fathers ghost. thats the effect of the Black Mist, if Thresh didnt kill him the Isles would have, and thats why he was falling and slipping all the time. Thresh knew he was already dead, and he couldve catch up to him easily, he just let him reach the boat to crush his hopes
