Well said, Kathy. I think all the you-tube fans agree this is a great hobby and no other hobby touches as many other things as model railroading does. It's a life-long learning opportunity. Looking forward to the new Model Railway Challenge series. All the best.
Thank you Kathy for this video !!!! Over the years I have " rivet counted " BUT at the same time I make sure I find something WONDERFUL they have done and say it to them !!!! Also, I have told them if they don't want to tell them any faults I see to tell me to SHUT UP and I will remember not to do it for them... As you pointed out it is a HOBBY, THEIR hobby and THEIR pleasure something we should/must ALWAYS remember !!!! THANK AGAIN for doing your videos, I enjoy them even I will NEVER be as good as you !!!!! Warren
I'm not a railway modeler, but an avid fan of this channel. Agree totally with everything you have said and the comments. That's why I usually have 3 or 4 shelf queens at various stages of completion. Thank you.
Kathy - THANK YOU! I haven't been down to my shed in six months. I was even contemplating giving up model railroading altogether, as obviously I'm no longer interested. I'm sick of locos coming off at that junction. I can never get that SD70Ace to run well. It took your video to show me that it's okay to take some time out. I will not give myself grief that I haven't been back in so long. I will not stress that I only put out one TH-cam video in almost a year. I am going down to the shed RIGHT NOW before I go to work, for just 20 minutes to run a train. I was worried before I saw your video. The early points (sic) really speak to me, THANK YOU!
Hi Kathy. Your model making skills are what inspire the rest of us to enjoy this hobby. There are lots of us that enjoy watching people like yourself make things and give tips and advice with this great hobby of ours. Always a pleasure to watch. The people who give kind comments on here including myself are the ones who give you support, so keep them coming and look forward to your next videos :-)
I let some people come and look at my layout and it became obvious to me that the 'rivet counters', as you call them, i.e. so called 'friends' are nothing but totally ''Jealous Barstuards'' because they couldn't do it themselves. Others, true friends were amazed and so was I that I'd produced something far better than I thought I could. Love watching your videos. Your the only inspiration that I need. Cheers.
Kathy , I was made aware of this video by Charlie Bishop of Chadwick Model Railway . Let the rivet counters go away you carry on with your excellent models and dioramas , great work indeed
Thanks Kathy, Having watched your video I now realise that what I have produced is OK because it makes ME happy. It may not be perfect but given that I only started modelling on my 70th birthday I am pleased to show it to anyone who is interested. Many thanks.
That's sound advice. I think that anyone who creates anything, especially such mind boggling, intricately detailed dioramas, are just brilliant. I've been to a few model railway exhibitions now, all ages, all genders and I'm bowled over, speechless by what I've seen. Thanks for sharing.😁
Rivet counters = Dementors, brilliant! Spot on. I don't know how anyone could look at your diorama and not be totally blown away by it. It's stunning. I'd love to see more of your Sci-fi modelling.
Dear K. Marvellous subject you picked . We were talking about it minutes before . My advice , when I lose the "track of thought " is : Clean up everything , put your scalpels tweezers , brushes in designated place . Empty the trays and clean the whole thing up ( INCLUDING AIRBRUSHES ) Make it clean and perfect as pharmacy ! Then I sit down , and just enjoy the rare moments of tidiness . For fifteen minutes ... and then something pops up in my mind ...there goes my tidy , snug moments of modelling .
Kathy, I have such admiration for those like you that make the effort to share their experiences as you often do. Don't take notice of the Trolls out there. For everyone one of them, there are dozens of us that benefit and are inspired by your contributions. Its a pity that many of us tend to be the quiet ones too, which has prompted me to more vocal on this occasion. Keep up the good work and thanks for sharing.
Kathy, noticing the negative is part of human nature. We tend to be hard on ourselves. Know that you have many fans and we appreciate your inspiration, your cool stories, and you yourself.
Just subscribed to your channel - I'm another female modeller who has just returned to railway modelling after 35 years (actually it's more of a diorama that happens to have a light railway running through it.) I love your tips, ideas and inspiration. You make me feel more comfy when I get the "should I be doing this" discomforts. Thanks Kathy.
Thanks Kathy, I found your video just in time. I was in my local model shop sharing a couple of photos of the forest I had built on my layout. My layout has taken about five years to build and runs right around the room; the forest takes up nearly one wall in the room; it had taken about a year to build and I was pleased with it. Another customer looked and said, 'Is your layout DC or DCC?' I told him him it was DC. He said, 'Ah well, you're just playing at trains aren't you. You can't have a serious layout unless it's DCC and you're wasting your time making things like that.' And then he walked off. I've hardly touched my layout since and when I do his words keep coming back to me. Listening to you though it seems I'm not the only one who's suffered this kind of discouraging abuse. Thanks for the video.
So many people want to feel superior at the expense of others. Please don’t let them ruin your hobby. As long as you are happy and pleased, then that’s all that matters.
Kathy Millatt It certainly is a very good response Kathy but I find “f*** off” works just as well! If they object to my criticism of their criticism I repeat myself. I find they are less likely to be so critical again! 🤣 Ps. I love your work.
Very inspiring especially for someone getting into model railroading or getting back into model railroading. Seeing the various layouts & the size, someone just starting out or reentering the hobby may be intimidated & self conscious if they only have a small layout & think there's isn't good enough to show to others. Like you said, don't be afraid to show your layout or kit you built. Take pride in your work. As someone else always says, "it's your railroad, do what you like".
I've only been railway modelling for a couple of years but to learn about techniques, I watched you, Luke and Richard from Everard Junction. The rest I learned as I went a long and I am still learning. I smiled at your list because much of it is similar to that I would have said to people in my 35 years mental health nursing career. I retired a couple of months ago at 55 and now have time (and less stress) to concentrate on my railway exhibition layout. Good job Kathy
Not so much lost my mojo but put off by a steam engine modeling forum I belonged to, I love making 1:12 scale live steam dioramas of industrial plants. All the forum members were interested in was collecting mass produced toys and trying to pretend they were antiques. They made nothing of their own. Thanks for your video cheered me up
Maybe you should start your own forum for 1:12 scale live steam dioramas. There may be more modelers out there like yourself with that particular interest in scratch building dioramas.
hi.... I've now only just had the chance to watch your video.....👏👏👏👏👏👏 Now someone of your reputation has stood up and spoke for us aspiring modellers...... I am a very keen photographer and for months I was trying to replicate the pictures I had seen ... only to see that 99 .9 % were Photoshop......that to me is not phototherapy........ you and what you stand for is the way it should be.- 👍👍👍
Like Keith Oxford, I saw Charlies comments on his channel on the keyboard warriors and rivet counters. You know what? - I don't care about those guys, but rather like others who have commented, I do model RR for enjoyment and that's all! Great videos Kathy!
Hi Kathy once again a great video :) and what you say is true, keep on keeping on everyone. Kathys right, enjoy your hobby and don't let them put you down.
Kathy you are an inspiration and a brilliant ambassador for this great hobby. Your top 10 tips were bang on target especially the rivet counters. Over the last 30 years of exhibiting and having had three layouts published in the modelling press there hasn't been one show that a rivet counter hasn't been in attendance! At first it was demoralising but I soon developed a thicker skin. Simple solution is ask them if they have a layout and why not bring it along to show it off. Oh you haven't got one! Well I then whisper in their ear - the rest is not printable! But they never bother you again!
It is a hobby, not a job! Right on Kathy! I had a 30 year drought, and am back with more skill (after rebuilding my skills back to and beyond my prior level) and enjoyment, thanks to youtube doer/makers like you! Model building is like flying or money. Someone else always has more flight hours, or money, and others have less. Be happy growing better everyday.
Kathy, you are SO right. I am getting back in the hobby after a 50 year hiatus. I have been flying RC airplanes the last 25 years and we too have our "rivet counters". There are so many types of aircraft to fly from small foam ones to giant scale masterpieces. You can fly a trainer along side a P-51 and have just as much fun. The key is, if you enjoy what you are doing, that is all that matters! Like Steve says: "IT'S MY RAILROAD!" Keep up the good work!
Well this is what I always say, “ Sticks & stones make break my bones, but your still a knucklehead!” You do and have always been a great influence to many modelers and still are.
Love your work and enthusiasm Kathy. If we are going to solve the rivet counter problem in this hobby we need to call the behavior out as it is a real problem. Sometimes people are simply ignorant of impact that their words have- and need to be reminded. Others simply need to be told where to stick there opinions! PS Charlie sent me.
I came over from Charles's site to find this particular video. You are correct. The rivet counters are the worst and they also pop up on discussion boards. On Model Railroad Hobbyist, keyboard flame wars have broken out in such heat that the moderators had to lock down particular threads and council some members. What is interesting it seems to be always the same people who start the flame wars. I am glad you showed your group of rivet counters. The Sweetest Revenge is Success!
Kathy, I admire your courage & honesty & gifting, taken into the public arena. After a lifetime of 12” to the foot steam engine restoration I thought I’d heard it all. These folk have not got time to do their own layouts because they’re so busy on the keyboards making people’s lives a misery & they’re jealous! Hold your head up high Kathy & keep going. Thank you for making our hobby easier with your advice, style & delivery. We never stop learning.
Your passion for this hobby Kathy is infectious. You show this with your own raw emotions. Great to see. People like you are the reason I have started my own TH-cam Chanel. @Model Railroad Techniques, this is adding new life to my modeling and a new dimension of the best hobby in the world.
Regarding your 'friends' (the rivet counters') ... they are NOT your friends & the sooner you ditch them the better. You don't need negative influence like that in your life ... let them stew in their bitter, jealous little worlds & find friends who will genuinely appreciate you & your work.
Thank you Kathy. Great advice. Guess that's why I usually have half a dozen projects going at one time. I really love what you do for the hobby, I've learned a lot from all of your videos here and on MRVP.
Was watching Chadwicks Model Railroading and he talked about this I had to see. This is a great insight... you are on point and great insight... make it fun as I say
Hi Kathy, I've just been on Charlie's channel to come over to yours to give you all the support. Please keep up the good work and don't let the nasty so and so's get to you. Your doing a fantastic job.
Sometimes we get so much pressure for our friends on TH-cam to get an update out and it becomes a job. I like your idea of taking a brake and enjoy it. We are suppose to have fun with it.
Wow what a great inspirational video. I haven't lost my mojo as I'm new to this great hobby and if anything, I'm super excited. The part that got me was the rivet counters. When I went to a local rail club to see what the hobby is all about, I was expecting some advice and hoping for some guidance. Well the baboon that was showing me around the club asked me what I was planning on modeling. My simple answer was "British steam trains" then he bombarded me with what era, what region, pre grouping or big four, post grouping. Somewhat confused I said to him just British steam, anything. Basically he told me that if I didn't choose I'd be wasting my time and money! I was so put off by him it took me another two years before I started this great hobby. I now run what I want on my layout from Stevens Rocket to the Tornado and love it.
I was once part of a model railway club for two years and it was almost the same there. I didn't have many model making skills to help out with building club layouts, I was more than happy to learn new skills but I wasn't approached or invited to join in on building the layout under construction. I was a lot of the time reduced to bringing my own trains and running them on the test layout throughout club hours. In the end I left as I felt like I was wasting my time and money on doing something that I could have been doing at home. Whenever I met new members, they asked me specifically what I choose to model. I gave an honest answer and said 'nothing really just whatever I like' and they just don't see you as one of them. So in the end I just felt like withdrawing my membership was the soundest option to choose. I built my own layout, although single track and simple I love it to pieces. I put whatever features I wanted on it. I wanted to put in a red poppy field, village green, canal, level crossing and a small halt-like station in Midland Maroon livery and so I did it. I run a mish-mash of locos and stock, from pre-grouping to BR blue diesel. I freed myself from the shackles of one era, one location, one railway company only. I feel like model railway clubs or societies don't do enough to attract or encourage young members. It's like they are clubs for retired old gents where everything is either their way or the highway.
Some very sound advice and great that someone of such high standing in the hobby has taken the time to help inspire others by putting this together. Sincere thanks, truly has made a difference to my current state of mind regards to the hobby. 😀
A fabulous video and I couldn't agree more with the sentiments. I have yet to start my railway, however, I have learned rule 1... It's your railway so you can run what you like and model what you like. I have no time for the rivet counters. I am a complete novice modeller and rely on videos, such as yours and others, for ideas, inspiration and know how. I love what you do and know that I am a long way from your standard. Won't stop me having a go, however :)
Thanks Kathy. You make some great points. Sometimes i look at my layout and think, Where do I start?! So the comment about being overwhelmed really rings true. As does the comment about going back to unfinished projects. I recently sent you photos of my layout. Most of the buildings are not quite finished and need final touches or weathering to complete. I think that this step will happen at the end when all of the buildings have at least some paint on. I watch TH-cam channels like yours to gain inspiration and encouragement to go on. Thank you. Monique from Brisbane
Monique I remember your layout and it is lovely. I still feel overwhelmed but I am trying to keep my projects bite-sized so I can finished them, whether that be a whole diorama or part of a layout.
I'm glad I'm not the only one to have a few part finished project. As well as my two gauges of model railway there is a part built wood model of the Cutty Sark, a plastic one of HMS Victory and another plastic kit not even started. Totally agree about rivet counters as well, they just suck the enjoyment out like vampires.
Hi Kathy, i've been speed profiling loco's and trying to get them all to stop at the same point and ultimately failing on the last one. Your video puts it all in perspective "it's a hobby enjoy it". I'll raise a glass to that. As for "friends" demoralising you, we all have friends like that but what fun they are missing. Excellent video, very inspirational thank you.
Kathy, thanks for this wonderful commentary! I feel a lot better after watching it, because lately I've been feeling - what have I been feeling? - stuck or lazy or overwhelmed or not motivated, both on the layout and in video-making. Sometimes I feel like I HAVE to work on the layout or make videos because I made a commitment to my subscribers and viewers to do so. It's fun, but it takes so much time. But you are absolutely right: it's a hobby, not a job.Great advice! ...Roy
Kathy thank you for the encouragement about our hobby to everyone. As I said on Charlie's Post @ Chadwick, who gives a flying scotsman what others say, unless it is good advice to improve our skills modelling. We don't need the rivet counters or keyboard warriors giving a modeller an ash panning. Run your layout the way you want to, whether it is proto typical or a fictitious any thing goes layout. I am sure those modellers never got it perfect all of the time either. Probably, if we see their trains and layouts, their would be something wrongly placed etc. So you do what you can for yourself folks, and do not let anyone tell you it's wrong. Those that do can go to Barry's and be cut up for scrap and shunt off.
Excellent video full of great info...... I too came from Charlie Bishop’s video, sad there are people who do that, who have nothing but negativity about everything. Thanks for the great video, keep them coming. 👍🏼👍🏼
Rivet counters. With friends like that, who needs enemies? Some people are simply infected with an overblown sense of their own importance. You do great work, Kathy! I really enjoyed your appearance on Steve Brown's Track Smack live stream! Keep up the good work!
Great stuff Kathy - especially tip #9. It is so important to keep in mind that there will always be people who have only negative things to say, and you cannot let that get you down. Thanks! -Rick
brill esp about the rivit counters, as a lady modeller who was told to go back to OO and leave O gauge to the proper modellers i love your vid, i have been in tears too but love my hobby to bits and my teen sons both modellers too, keep up the brill work
Tanya. Thanks for your comment and sticking with the hobby. I suspect you threatened the O scalers view of the world so you must be doing something right!
This is so true and part of the time I think people set themselves up to fail. Like I recently found your channel and static grass...previously I would have just flocked it and manually put in the long grass and bushes but suddenly I am thinking nothing can look right unless I have a static grass applicator and have mastered the technique. Of course I can do nothing of the kind due to breaking my dominant arm recently and I am sure, if I really think it through, that I can complete the current miniature without static grass...but you know what I mean. Those 'rivet counters' appear in every area of life, whatever the hobby or sport you do. They just arent happy unless theyre nit picking and as Kathy says, you can do without the negativity. I am really old compared to most of you and I have run accross them at work, in the horse world, they inhabit the doll and action figure world, everywhere. And theyre not happy unless theyre sucking the joy out of someone else's life. So do as Kathy says and surround yourself with people who really enjoy the hobby and life and you will be much happier. Nobody needs that. Great video here Kathy.
That diorama looks pretty amazing to me. Ah rivet counters, your right we have all encountered them at some stage. Smaller scales quite often lend them selves to a bit of artistic license due to the nature of the sizes involved. As long as you are happy with the scene it is portraying, then that's fine. I have built many scratch built items of rolling stock from scale drawings, and yes some details are not quite right, but I know and most of the people who have seen them have agreed they are amazing which is good enough for me. Enjoy the hobby, I have since I was 4 and I am 50 now so it must still have some appeal.
Kathy, that's the most Sage advice I've heard in a long time! Just Subbed from my RC Channel, but I've interacted with you for years on my MRR Channel, PacbeltRR. Rivet Counters... A pile of PILLAKS if you ask me!! I had one tear down a HO Scale Apartment Building that I spent a year, Scratchbuilding, Detailing, Painting, individual LEDs placed in different rooms at different brightness and color... I'm not recommending this, but I had the unpleasant experience of seeing him again, at a Regional Modeler's Meet. He had built a BNSF GP38-2, a Loco I happen to have a great working knowledge of........ Well I went over it with a fine tooth comb, and proceeded to RIP APART every single flaw on his Model, in a fairly loud voice! I wanted to make sure others heard me as well. 😋😆😄 I almost feel badly... But maybe giving him a dose of his own medicine might have given him some perspective. This Video was invaluable! I'm deep into RC Flight and Crawlers lately, because I've been in the exact funk you described. That, and in the past 10 years, Model Railroading has become SO bloody EXPENSIVE, I can't afford major needed items! 😭😭 I actually reached out to the Model Railroading Community with my PayPal address, which took a LOT of pride swallowing..... And was met with ridicule, indifference and even accusations of being a Scammer!!! 💔 Well, that really put a big dent in my Mojo also. I haven't touched my Layout in over 3 years! But I do think about it every now and then. I just can't afford it. 😞 Carmine ✈🚂🚙
Although I'm not a railway modeller myself, I am subscribed to quite a few channels (yours too now). I am constantly amazed by the things that can be done in the hobby. As regards rivet counters, you will find them in every hobby known to humankind.
Very good advice there Kathy. I was put off ipms many years ago because i had just as you describe with total put down. You have encouraged me to take the lid off the box and make something this weekend rather than just look at the box top. Tony
Hi Kathy Totally agree with you what gives anyone the right to down someones work. We all do a hobby for fun and enjoyment and I think if it looks right to the person building it, it is right. all the best and keep the videos coming. Dave.
Excellent video as usual. There's a prototype for everything and something to mention to your rivet counter friends-my Grandad had a bench vice that was years old,and he always left it with the handle horizontally, because left vertically,it could, and often did,stick.Up.Looking forward to the new series of TGMC.
Thank you so much for posting. This is helping inspire me to get back out and work with what I have, my abilities, and enjoyment. I work hard in the summers and have more time in the fall and winter for hobbies, and can't wait to get back at it. This was the Train caffeine I needed to boost my morale.
You are so RIGHT Kathy it's a hobby and we are all at different skillsets and it is a hobby, and if we like it then tis great....thanks for sharing....Jack 🤗
I have always found that the people who can only criticize are jealous of not being able to do what you do! Life is full of things that are not perfect so why should a model not be...? Loved the hair down Kathy...:) p.s. I think your work it wonderful...:)🇬🇷☮️
Thanks! Perfection is often the enemy of finishing. Hair down is not great for modelling I’m afraid. I have wiped out whole models with it and it’s an impenetrable curtain for filming!
Hi Kathy, I to have come over from Charlie's channel. As I said to Charlie a disability now prevents me from modelling anymore and videos keep me interested in a great hobby.
I've done this for years in my younger years and always enjoyed it, fortunately i got to busy with work (and the girls lol) got married and left it for what it was. Now i'm 52 and in no rush anymore, and want to pick this hobby up again. But my god, it has changed so much over the years, i need to learn all over again. so much different ways to build, sculpted, paint every little detail. I am lost in my old hobby and have no idea where to start. I feel like i got married and have no idea who my wife is lol.
Totally Kathy. Lost mine last few weeks and when it happens hv to walk away and change tack. I also recommend the idea even if you open a box and read some instructions, you hv done something. I hv same issues with my MR layout, so big I hv to break it into sections to see progress
Dear Ms. Millate, Just viewed your latest video and was inspired. So, if I finally) get-back-into-it (Hobby, planes/armor) and actually (finally) finish something, I’m blaming you! B-T-W There will always be detractors who will try to elevate themselves bu pounding down those around them. Keep calm, and keep building on.
Many thanks Kathy. This is a truly genuine and inspirational video which has addressed a number of anxieties I have about starting modelling. My plan is to build a Barry Railway layout based on Pontypridd and the goods yard at Pwllgwaun. I have a number of friends who are far better modellers than myself who have been very supportive. I don't regard myself as a natural modeller but I would like to have the ability to model buildings. But rather than dive straight in to the scratchbuilding world, I have decided to start with some Metcalfe kits just to get myself going. I probably will never use any of them but it's a good way to build confidence: start small and progress in small stages. The negativists (dementers is a good description) are people whose only sense of self-esteem is derived from the belittling of others. I have no sympathy for their behaviour although we all have our particular railway interest that we obsess about (mine is Welsh independent railways) and if we derive pleasure from it, then all to the good. The damage is done when we impose those interests and values on others; that is not what this hobby is about. The sad aspect of this is that when we see people behaving in that way, we are watching a rerun of how they were brought up to think about themselves. At some point, they were told that their efforts were inadequate because they were not perfect and that is now their approach to everyone else. What they miss out is the chance to share in the pleasure and achievements of others. They will never know that but it's their loss.
Thanx for the kick in the Mojo, some times I get frustrated and walk away. About a year ago I took to finishing projects that have been unfinished for years, and got them done ( mostly engines and rolling stock). Installing DCC , sound and lights in brass loco's and can be tedious, however, I learn patience and hone my fine work skills. X: Charlie...... here in the USA
Hi Kathy ,nail on the head ,we are our biggest critic and what gets me ,i start off all fired up and i had a problem with fish plates fitting,it annoyed me so i walked away for a few days ordered more fish plates of the right type and enjoyed my hobby with no stress ,thats what a hobby is supposed to be ,,relaxing..Till next time Take Care xxx
Great video Kathy, I am astonished that anyone would have the brass neck to criticise your work!!! Omg, I think that has to be envy on their part, you're among the top modellers in the country and someone tries to criticise your work just wow ha ha. Great video again and you finished with a lovely smile
Wow, what a fabulous video you made there Kathy, without doing any form of modelling at all, your words have put a new spring into my life, your genuine enthusiasm, wise words of wisdom but best of all, you made me feel as good as the next person which if I’m truthful, I was beginning to doubt. Thank you so much for producing this video Kathy, it has made such a difference to my thought process of my hobby - model railways! 👍🏻👍🏻. Cheers for now. ........... Graham
Charie is absolutely right!!! Criticism is very easy. Motivating people is another story. It is a shame that such people ruin the TH-cam channels of this wonderful hobby!! Keep on going Kathy!! Cheers Onno.
Personally, Kathy I think your modeling is awesome! I learned a lot watching yours and Luke's TH-cam videos! And that diorama is awesome detailed! So yeah don't listen to the rivet counters for sure! Great video!
Always remember it's your layout and the only one you need t please is yourself! I do like accuracy but you van easily get way over taxed with detail and lose the fun in the hobby goes away. I totally agree with you but I must say I wish I was half as good as you are I think your videos are great and your work wonderful . :-)
This was a great video. Loved it and a much needed reminder. Funny how our hobbies can turn into something we come to dread when they started out as something we love with so much passion! I need to remind myself of that often and bring myself back to that place. Getting better at doing that when I start realizing “I’m doing it again” and start to stress about getting things done.
What a great video! I am a huge fan of yours and admit I just went thru that phase where I burned out on finishing my small layout and took some time off and have scratch built a couple of TARDIS's (6 1/2" tall)to hone my skills with styrene.. it was the break I needed and your video has made me feel even better! Thank you! Just ignore those that would " look a gift horse in the mouth" to quote an old saying!!
Some great tips Kathy thanks for sharing them, I like the small diorama approach working on small areas, empty big baseboards really puts me off and I struggle with it. I call the Rivet counters Fun Sponges, cause they suck the fun out of everything that comes out of them. I'm all for constructive comments/criticism but when it becomes personal or because they are jealous of what you can do and they can't it becomes nasty and not required. I watch so many videos on TH-cam, Luke Towan, Everard Junction, Dean Park, Glebe Road, Lukes APS, Graham Foulston the list goes on, and your great channel. Its great to share skills and make new friends and meet them at shows and ask questions and get help. So nice that this great hobby is becoming more social able, and the old stigma of a little old man stuck in his loft hiding away his hobby and interest is going thankfully, a lot of thanks for this must be The Great Model Railway Challenge. Andy
Love this - it's all very true. As for the rivet counters, I always ask, "What's your model like?" and they ALWAYS shut up. At best they start, "Well when I build mine, it will..." I'll never criticise someone who has had a go at modelling, there's always something to learn and just because you are new, doesn't mean you won't have some good ideas.
OMG, this was great, hit every button on the list... " of 10" Its worse when FAMILY does it to, and some how ya can't GET rid of them, happened to me last week.. I simply had to Hang up the Phone, I LOVE the things I make.. And I desided I DO NOT Care what Family thinks!! THANK YOU LOVE YOUR CHANNEL!! NICE WORK!!
Thanks for posting this video, I have recently gone through a self loathing stage after a similar situation where someone told me it didnt look right or good etc. I took months off because of that. Its nice to know other builders experience this as well. I love your videos, please keep them coming !!!!
Caught your channel by accident today. Wow. Just what I needed. I am an armour modeller who has come to an halt with a Merkava for over a month now. I am going back to it tonight. By the way, your "friends" in 9 are not real friends. Then you win best of show. Congratulations. So that was a double win. The Show plus one over the rivet counters.
G'day from Australia. Just found your channel (from watching Charles for the first time too). I welled-up when you said your diorama won best in show at the NMRA show. Well done and I hope the rivet counters watched this video too (and that they realise you were talking about THEM!!!!). You go girl!!!
Love the video . Great job as usual . The thing is that I'm a rivet counter BUT ..... I'm a nice one . I taught my friends how much fun it is to build from kits or scratch even conversion . Back when I was a kid ( some 12 , 761yrs ). My Dad got me a 1:48 'th scale Bat mobile from a shop that also had a Slot car track . Well longer story short ( novella ) . I converted the car body to fit one of my slot cars , although it was a little loose fit it was a Big Hit . The shop owner even fixed the problem of the loose fit for free and let me in a race . But that was a long time ago . Back when I was in my 20's . I accidentally got into building models for a local on Base Military Museum . The curator told me I was doing an excellent job on repairing the models that were already there and asked me to see about the availability of some other models needed for the display . That started a small career of 14 museums . That's when I discovered that I have PMS ( no not that one ) Professional. Modeler . Syndrome . I've got to the point where I'm able to work with several models at the same time . At this time I'm working with 6 1:32'nd scale aircraft from Vietnam era. 5 1:32'nd W W - 2 aircraft . AND 14 1:350 scale W W - 2 Battle Ships . US , UK , DKM and IJN . One of which I'm using as a personal challenge . The USS Arizona by Hobbie Boss . Wood Decks from Scale Decks . With 4 sheets of Brass parts from Big Ed photo etch . I'm sorry that it's a long story . I've sort of given up on working on my Trains and Layout , due to a very leaky roof over my work shop that needs to be completely replaced . Well what I'm trying to say is ..... Yes I'm a rivet counter But I only count Mine and try to encourage others .
#9: Spot on! God love ya! Can't imagine ANYONE being that talented, that they can find fault with your models/ techniques/ channel. Folks like yourself, Charlie, Tony, Ron and "Everard" (sorry, I don't know the gent's name) are a constant source of info, insight, inspiration and encouragement to all the beginners like myself. Thank-you and keep up the great work. Cheers!
Not the same hobby, but the same symptoms. Thanks for the tips! I may just tackle some of the current project tomorrow. At least I just looked it over and assessed the situation. I hadn't even glanced at it in months..........
Fantastic Kathy !! I do military , aircraft and sci Fi but i do enjoy a good railway. My uncle Peter turned their spare room into a railway when I was young but eventually sold it all but I used to go with him to the shops as they sold tanks and aircraft to , some shops did and some even sold subbuteo !! The footy game that you used to flick the players !!! I was brought up with that and scalextric ! I bought some train bits when my uncle did but I was 14 and didnt have the funds to buy the N gauge stuff as it was so expensive then. But now I model armour , air raft etc but it's very good to cross hobbies and look at others as you can pick so many tips up !! I mean from yourself, Luke and other railway folks I've learned so many tips etc for my dioramas it's untrue ! Then there's the games chaps , with their scenery I've picked bits up from them , tools , paintbrushes etc etc !! Anyway brill video Kathy and I hope you and your family are well ? I'm off for a week to Bets y coed !! A lot of train modellers know this place as the railway station has a huge diorama and I mean huge and it's trains it's brill !!! Then there's the shop , not huge but they sell the odd model kits but tons of train bits !!! Anyway you can wake up now I'll stop boring you !!! Lol stay safe Kathy and thanks again
I envy you very much ! I did two tours of duty in Iraq and one in Afghan with the Royal Marines , I came out and went straight into the Prison Service been there ever since. Well I've worked around Stoke on Trent for most of that but in 2008 - 20010 they had permission to build a Prison between Colwyn Bay and Rhyll. I had been granted a transfer as my dream was to buy or rent a house around by Conway Marina or close By . However , still to this day they haven't built that Prison and I have to be happy with my yearly weeks visit and the odd day trip to see this , your beautiful area. Although I'm struggling to find a real decent Model shop around here. I know there's a fairly decent one in Porthmadog and a little one under a toy shop in cannaerven (spelt completely wrong ) ha ha !!! But apart from that there's barely anything that sells military , armour or aircraft !!! Or do you know different our Kathy ?????? Ha ha . Thank you very much for your kind words is very nice of you !!
Kathy I may be just getting back into railroading but I haven't seen a single thing I haven't enjoyed or learned something. I agree with your comments and opinions. Please keep your videos coming, I need all the help I can get
Totally agree about the over critical rivot counters. Funny thing is Ive never met one happy in their own skin. I always try to avoid negative people.
I agree that surrounding yourself with positive people is a real boost.
Very good. Charlie Bishop's video sent me over and delighted with the visit. Lovely old barn model.
Thanks!
Well said, Kathy. I think all the you-tube fans agree this is a great hobby and no other hobby touches as many other things as model railroading does. It's a life-long learning opportunity. Looking forward to the new Model Railway Challenge series. All the best.
Thanks and the new series is out later this month.
Warren
Thanks and I agree, it’s good to check before offering criticism.
I'm not a railway modeler, but an avid fan of this channel. Agree totally with everything you have said and the comments. That's why I usually have 3 or 4 shelf queens at various stages of completion. Thank you.
Shelf queens! I think I have bookcases full of them... thanks.
Glad I've inspired you and enjoy running trains.
Thanks Paul. Really appreciate the comments.
Cheers.
Thank you! I’ve had the same experience and you really do need positive people around you.
Kathy , I was made aware of this video by Charlie Bishop of Chadwick Model Railway . Let the rivet counters go away you carry on with your excellent models and dioramas , great work indeed
Hi Kathy,
I’ve came over from Charlie Bishops channel to support your modelling endeavours. Great inspirational video with sound advice,
Cheers Ross
Thanks Ross
Thanks Kathy, Having watched your video I now realise that what I have produced is OK because it makes ME happy. It may not be perfect but given that I only started modelling on my 70th birthday I am pleased to show it to anyone who is interested. Many thanks.
Chris, that’s a great attitude. Thank you for sharing.
I love these bits of advice, and I am 100% sure that there is not one of us who hasn't needed to hear it from time to time. Thank you.
I need to remind myself regularly too! Glad you enjoyed the video.
That's sound advice. I think that anyone who creates anything, especially such mind boggling, intricately detailed dioramas, are just brilliant. I've been to a few model railway exhibitions now, all ages, all genders and I'm bowled over, speechless by what I've seen. Thanks for sharing.😁
could not agree more
Exhibitions are such amazing places to learn and be inspired.
Rivet counters = Dementors, brilliant! Spot on.
I don't know how anyone could look at your diorama and not be totally blown away by it. It's stunning.
I'd love to see more of your Sci-fi modelling.
Thanks Mark. Really appreciate the comments. I’d love to have more time on the sci-fi but I’ve got some plans bubbling along.
@@KathyMillatt count me in as another sci-fi model fan.
Great!
Dear K.
Marvellous subject you picked . We were talking about it minutes before .
My advice , when I lose the "track of thought " is :
Clean up everything , put your scalpels tweezers , brushes in designated place .
Empty the trays and clean the whole thing up ( INCLUDING AIRBRUSHES )
Make it clean and perfect as pharmacy !
Then I sit down , and just enjoy the rare moments of tidiness . For fifteen minutes ...
and then something pops up in my mind ...there goes my tidy , snug moments of modelling .
I never seem to get that tidy but it is a good way to rest your mind. Thanks.
Thanks so much. It is too easy to only notice the negative comments.
That’s so great to hear. Good luck with your diorama.
Any time someone criticizes my work I ask them to show me theirs. It usually shuts them up.
It’s a good response.
Kathy Millatt
It certainly is a very good response Kathy but I find “f*** off” works just as well!
If they object to my criticism of their criticism I repeat myself. I find they are less likely to be so critical again! 🤣
Ps.
So true! I wish the benchmark wasn’t always size!
Thanks a lot. Sometimes it’s the simplest stuff we struggle with the most!
Not so much lost my mojo but put off by a steam engine modeling forum I belonged to, I love making 1:12 scale live steam dioramas of industrial plants. All the forum members were interested in was collecting mass produced toys and trying to pretend they were antiques. They made nothing of their own.
Thanks for your video cheered me up
Don’t let them get you down. As long as you enjoy it, that’s what matters.
I am a very keen photographer and for months I was trying to replicate the pictures I had seen ... only to see that 99 .9 % were Photoshop......that to me is not phototherapy........ you and what you stand for is the way it should be.- 👍👍👍
Thanks Gordon.
Like Keith Oxford, I saw Charlies comments on his channel on the keyboard warriors and rivet counters. You know what? - I don't care about those guys, but rather like others who have commented, I do model RR for enjoyment and that's all! Great videos Kathy!
Thanks. Model railways are fun!
Kathy your “lecture” was as great as your building specials or the other way around!!! Thanks for the time spent!
Glad you enjoyed it.
Hi Kathy once again a great video :) and what you say is true, keep on keeping on everyone. Kathys right, enjoy your hobby and don't let them put you down.
Thanks and so true.
It’s such a shame but at least you e learnt to handle it. I wonder if they realise that not everyone can.
John. So true!
Kathy, you are SO right. I am getting back in the hobby after a 50 year hiatus. I have been flying
RC airplanes the last 25 years and we too have our "rivet counters". There are so many types of
aircraft to fly from small foam ones to giant scale masterpieces. You can fly a trainer along side
a P-51 and have just as much fun. The key is, if you enjoy what you are doing, that is all that matters!
Like Steve says: "IT'S MY RAILROAD!" Keep up the good work!
So true. This is a hobby and it is fun!
Well this is what I always say, “ Sticks & stones make break my bones, but your still a knucklehead!” You do and have always been a great influence to many modelers and still are.
Thanks!
Thanks Simon. We also need to learn to call out in a nice way. That’s hard too!
Thanks a lot fir checking out the video.
Thanks a lot!
Your passion for this hobby Kathy is infectious. You show this with your own raw emotions. Great to see. People like you are the reason I have started my own TH-cam Chanel. @Model Railroad Techniques, this is adding new life to my modeling and a new dimension of the best hobby in the world.
Good luck with your channel. It certainly makes you improve when your sharing with the world!
Regarding your 'friends' (the rivet counters') ... they are NOT your friends & the sooner you ditch them the better. You don't need negative influence like that in your life ... let them stew in their bitter, jealous little worlds & find friends who will genuinely appreciate you & your work.
Thanks!
Love the positivity Kathy! Thanks for doing what you do.
Thanks a lot.
Totally agree
Thank you Kathy. Great advice. Guess that's why I usually have half a dozen projects going at one time. I really love what you do for the hobby, I've learned a lot from all of your videos here and on MRVP.
Thanks a lot Gerry.
Was watching Chadwicks Model Railroading and he talked about this I had to see. This is a great insight... you are on point and great insight... make it fun as I say
Thanks a lot.
Ditto :-)
Hi Kathy, I've just been on Charlie's channel to come over to yours to give you all the support. Please keep up the good work and don't let the nasty so and so's get to you. Your doing a fantastic job.
Thanks!
Sometimes we get so much pressure for our friends on TH-cam to get an update out and it becomes a job. I like your idea of taking a brake and enjoy it. We are suppose to have fun with it.
Joe, you’ve hit the nail in the head!
Jose. What a shame you were put off our great hobby but I’m so glad you’ve come back. Enjoy whatever you run!
Thanks so much. Glad I could help in some way.
It’s the having a go that’s as important as the succeeding in my book.
Agreed
Thanks Kathy.
You make some great points.
Sometimes i look at my layout and think, Where do I start?! So the comment about being overwhelmed really rings true.
As does the comment about going back to unfinished projects. I recently sent you photos of my layout. Most of the buildings are not quite finished and need final touches or weathering to complete. I think that this step will happen at the end when all of the buildings have at least some paint on.
I watch TH-cam channels like yours to gain inspiration and encouragement to go on. Thank you.
Monique from Brisbane
Monique
I remember your layout and it is lovely. I still feel overwhelmed but I am trying to keep my projects bite-sized so I can finished them, whether that be a whole diorama or part of a layout.
Absolutely correct. Have fun, enjoy and learn. It can be different every day and that is fun too!
What a great mantra.
Glad I’m not alone in the “too many projects”.
Thanks a lot Malcolm and good luck with that last loco.
But you are absolutely right: it's a hobby, not a job.Great advice! ...Roy
Roy. I’ve been there and I have to continually remind myself that it is a hobby!
Thanks John.
Excellent video full of great info...... I too came from Charlie Bishop’s video, sad there are people who do that, who have nothing but negativity about everything. Thanks for the great video, keep them coming. 👍🏼👍🏼
Thanks a lot.
Rivet counters. With friends like that, who needs enemies? Some people are simply infected with an overblown sense of their own importance. You do great work, Kathy! I really enjoyed your appearance on Steve Brown's Track Smack live stream! Keep up the good work!
Thanks a lot! Steve was great to be with.
Great stuff Kathy - especially tip #9. It is so important to keep in mind that there will always be people who have only negative things to say, and you cannot let that get you down. Thanks! -Rick
So true. Thanks.
brill esp about the rivit counters, as a lady modeller who was told to go back to OO and leave O gauge to the proper modellers i love your vid, i have been in tears too but love my hobby to bits and my teen sons both modellers too, keep up the brill work
Thank you so much!
Thanks Nige. As long as you enjoy it, that’s the important thing.
I almost feel badly...
Well, that really put a big dent in my Mojo also. I haven't touched my Layout in over 3 years! But I do think about it every now and then. I just can't afford it. 😞
Carmine ✈🚂🚙
It is possible to do modelling more cheaply and there’s some great ideas out there on it. Don’t let it put you off.
Although I'm not a railway modeller myself, I am subscribed to quite a few channels (yours too now). I am constantly amazed by the things that can be done in the hobby. As regards rivet counters, you will find them in every hobby known to humankind.
Sad but true and thanks for subscribing.
Very good advice there Kathy. I was put off ipms many years ago because i had just as you describe with total put down. You have encouraged me to take the lid off the box and make something this weekend rather than just look at the box top. Tony
Tony. Hope you open that box and really enjoy yourself.
That's a great bit of advice Kathy I've been considering taking a couple of months out of TH-cam and just relax and finish stuff on the layout
I think we all need a holiday from time to time. Certainly my layout could do with it.
Thanks Kathy, Great advice, your work is beautiful and You're a wonderful Inspiration!
Thank you so much.
Hi Kathy Totally agree with you what gives anyone the right to down someones work. We all do a hobby for fun and enjoyment and I think if it looks right to the person building it, it is right. all the best and keep the videos coming. Dave.
Thanks Dave!
Excellent video as usual. There's a prototype for everything and something to mention to your rivet counter friends-my Grandad had a bench vice that was years old,and he always left it with the handle horizontally, because left vertically,it could, and often did,stick.Up.Looking forward to the new series of TGMC.
Thanks Ian. The new series is filmed. It will be out in the autumn.
Thank you so much for posting. This is helping inspire me to get back out and work with what I have, my abilities, and enjoyment. I work hard in the summers and have more time in the fall and winter for hobbies, and can't wait to get back at it. This was the Train caffeine I needed to boost my morale.
Glad you found the video useful!
You are so RIGHT Kathy it's a hobby and we are all at different skillsets and it is a hobby, and if we like it then tis great....thanks for sharing....Jack 🤗
Thanks Jack!
That’s awful but thankfully our hobby is blessed with so many different facets that you can still find a way to take part.
It can be baffling but I find starting small is good. It seems most magazines show off massive layouts as better but I find them so daunting.
Totally Kathy. Lost mine last few weeks and when it happens hv to walk away and change tack. I also recommend the idea even if you open a box and read some instructions, you hv done something. I hv same issues with my MR layout, so big I hv to break it into sections to see progress
Good tips!
Dear Ms. Millate,
Just viewed your latest video and was inspired. So, if I finally) get-back-into-it (Hobby, planes/armor) and actually (finally) finish something, I’m blaming you!
B-T-W There will always be detractors who will try to elevate themselves bu pounding down those around them. Keep calm, and keep building on.
Happy to be blamed! Good luck with what you’re planning.
What an amazing comment and so true. Good luck with your modelling and I love Welsh independent railways too!
Wow, I wish I could finish off all my half done projects. Well done!
Kathy, absolutely brilliant, thanks for the reminder that it is our hobby
Thanks Ray
Hi Kathy ,nail on the head ,we are our biggest critic and what gets me ,i start off all fired up and i had a problem with fish plates fitting,it annoyed me so i walked away for a few days ordered more fish plates of the right type and enjoyed my hobby with no stress ,thats what a hobby is supposed to be ,,relaxing..Till next time Take Care xxx
You’re right, a little time and distance often helps the mind work through the problem and resolve it. Thanks.
Hi Kaity seen Charlies video Brilliant !! Just subed to your channel Keep up the GREAT WORK Tony Australia
Thanks!
Great video Kathy, I am astonished that anyone would have the brass neck to criticise your work!!! Omg, I think that has to be envy on their part, you're among the top modellers in the country and someone tries to criticise your work just wow ha ha. Great video again and you finished with a lovely smile
I do get criticism but there’s normally a nugget of truth which I try to learn from.
👍🏻👍🏻. Cheers for now. ........... Graham
Graham. That’s so great to hear and good luck just enjoying your hobby.
Well said. It is people without a layout and have never done modeling that really annoy me when they criticize. Right on
True. Some critics are excellent modellers themselves unfortunately.
Charie is absolutely right!!! Criticism is very easy. Motivating people is another story. It is a shame that such people ruin the TH-cam channels of this wonderful hobby!! Keep on going Kathy!! Cheers Onno.
Thanks a lot.
Personally, Kathy I think your modeling is awesome! I learned a lot watching yours and Luke's TH-cam videos! And that diorama is awesome detailed! So yeah don't listen to the rivet counters for sure! Great video!
I love Luke’s videos too. Such a great guy. Thanks
Always remember it's your layout and the only one you need t please is yourself! I do like accuracy but you van easily get way over taxed with detail and lose the fun in the hobby goes away. I totally agree with you but I must say I wish I was half as good as you are I think your videos are great and your work wonderful . :-)
Thanks so much!
I am the worst for putting too much pressure on myself. At least we’re both catching ourselves when we realise it.
Brilliant. I grew up on Doctor Who and the Tardis. Never feel guilty about your hobbies!
Andy
Thanks Andy. I do hope to encourage people into the hobby as it’s too much fun to be hidden away!
Your work is amazing, I didn't find your channel until fairly recently and I'm really enjoying it.
Thanks Jon. Glad you’re enjoying it.
Thank you SO MUCH...you don't know how much I needed that!!!! Perfect timing 👍👍
Brilliant!
Totally agree Phil. Some of the newbies blow the socks off us more experienced modellers. I love seeing what they’re coming up with!
NICE WORK!!
Thanks so much and hang on in there!
Thanks for posting this video, I have recently gone through a self loathing stage after a similar situation where someone told me it didnt look right or good etc. I took months off because of that. Its nice to know other builders experience this as well.
I love your videos, please keep them coming !!!!
You are definitely not alone. I’m sorry someone spoilt the hobby for you but I hope you are able to get back to it now.
Glad to hear you’re getting back to the modelling. Enjoy!
thank you for all your great work I use your videos to pick me up from time to time as I love you work and attitude
Thanks. That means a lot.
great video Kathy with excellent advice just starting building a layout so that has given me some confidence, Cheers Kev
Good luck and I hope you really enjoy it.
G'day from Australia. Just found your channel (from watching Charles for the first time too). I welled-up when you said your diorama won best in show at the NMRA show. Well done and I hope the rivet counters watched this video too (and that they realise you were talking about THEM!!!!). You go girl!!!
Thanks!
Thanks for posting Kathy - made me feel a lot better about the slow progress on my layout
My progress is glacial so we’re in the same boat.
That's when I discovered that I have PMS ( no not that one )
Professional. Modeler .
You’re not a river counter if you only count your own rivets. I have as many projects on the go!
Thanks for sharing.
Thoroughly enjoyed this video, it gave much inspiration. Thank you.
Cheers!
Thanks so much!
Not the same hobby, but the same symptoms. Thanks for the tips! I may just tackle some of the current project tomorrow. At least I just looked it over and assessed the situation. I hadn't even glanced at it in months..........
Good luck. Getting going is often the hardest bit.
Have a great tip to Wales. I live that part of the world and thanks for sharing.
Mottys Military Models I realise I misspelt love with live. I love that part of Wales but sadly live quite a few hours away.
Nail (not rivet) hit right on the head - what a pleasant view of the world :-)
Thanks a lot!
Kathy I may be just getting back into railroading but I haven't seen a single thing I haven't enjoyed or learned something. I agree with your comments and opinions. Please keep your videos coming, I need all the help I can get
Chris. I do enjoy making the videos and it’s great to hear that you like watching them.
