There's news! There's archaeology news, no less! And this archaeology news comes all the way from Poland, where a new Viking Age sword has been discovered in a river! It's safe and sound and we're going to learn why this particular sword is really rather exciting, whether it turns out to be Viking, Norse, Polish, Baltic or anything else!

I think your hat looks stupid....however Have you any sources where we can buy proper lambskin viking hats. .you know the the round ones with a pointy top and fur around the outside edge....so we don't wear stupid hats😮😅
As a Pole, I'm very impressed by your pronunciation of Polish names. Thank you for taking the time to learn them ❤ And more importantly, thank you for a great informative video filled with excitement! 😁
Mistyyy, second silliest hat, they used to hang people here. Great start!😂
Isn't it wild that a sword can be at the bottom of a river for over 1000 years just existing and then someone finds it and brings it out and people know a little bit more about swords from a thousand years ago. I'd love to know more about how they conserve things
The crossed design on the pommel is such a fun detail. The way which the traps are interlocking is strikingly similar to the design found on the Vang rune-stone from Norway, really makes you wonder if this style of interlocking strap decor was more prominent than previously perceived. Also makes you wonder about what other fun and unique Viking age fashion-details have been lost to time.
It makes me wonder if many of those 3 lobed pomels on viking swords had blingy leather wrapping like this one and troughs between the lobes were to keep the leather from slipping.
in January this year, another 10th century sword (S type) was found. It was recovered from the bottom of the Vistula River while deepening the pool at the marina at ul. Piwna in Włocławek. it was probably forged in Western Europe and finished in a workshop in Scandinavia. A computed tomography scan revealed symbols on the blade. There is a whole video on YT of when he was found and another when it was donated to the museum. 1st video: "MIECZ CHROBREGO - by Olaf Popkiewicz" (in polish - around 16min in) 2nd vid - donation - "MIECZ WRACA DO WŁOCŁAWKA" also by Olaf (also in Polish - 19min in)
Archaeologists all think its real fun & cute when bodies of water start giving out swords but they only do that when stressed & looking for a king
Strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of government...
ouch, as this was poland soon we mightl have winged hussars riding the polish countryside if we choose to extrapolate.
Archeology king of Poland?
@@Eloraurorahumorously refering to legend of arthur/lady of the lake, with slight hint of Sir Terry pratchett and this sword in a polish river and thus being far from any real archeology...
@@najroe Sorry, I wasn't clear in my joke. I got the references, I was just thinking it would be funny to have a king who's only in charge of Polish archeology.
I would like to add some comments from the area where the sword was found (20 km from where I live). In the 9th-10th century, the land along the Supraśl river was most likely in an area controlled by the Yotvingian tribe (a tribe of Balts living east of the Prussians and southwest of the then Lithuanians). Perhaps temporarily, the river was the southern border of the Yotvingians. This tribe fought battles with neighbouring Rus (Kyiv Rus) and Mazovian tribes (controlled by Poland since the 10th century), and the sword found may be related to one such skirmish. Thank you for your video!
Very interesting information. Thanks for your input.
I'll just be casually lurking here waiting for that juicy conservation info- I'm dying to know how the leather survived.
Maybe similar to bog environment, allowing preservation of the hide/leather
Edit to correct autocorrect
If the water is cold enough it can. There are bodies in Lake Superior that are (of course a lot newer) and have been perfectly preserved for years.
On behalf of all your fans, we wish you a Merry Christmas❤
He said it was an anaerobic envionment.
In all likelihood the leather is ( for lack of a better term) fossilized. Being in proximity to metal, as the metal degraded the leather absorbed the iron replacing any organic materials. This is common in aquatic environments. It doesn't take long, take nails put them in a canvas bag and leave it outside. In a year or two you'll notice the fabric becoming discolored and stiff from the metal oxidation. In archaeology we have found evidence of a lot of organics that have long since rotted but have been partially preserved because of the metal objects one near it
Jimmy: welcome to the little Knave's mire
Me: aw what a lovely view
Jimmy: they used to haybg people over there
and he sounded so gleeful when he said it too XD
Just one of the many reasons we love him.
😂 it was brilliant
The interwoven detail of the leather straps make me think of näverslöjd (birch bark crafts of Scandinavia and Russia) and crafts done with paper strips. Näverslöjd is probably very old and I wonder if it inspired the paper-strip-weaving or if it's just a coincident that they can look similar (weaving is pretty fundamental after all). Anyways, the look of it feels very Scandi to me and I wonder how much of viking culture is actually still with us in sneaky little ways that we take for granted as "of our culture".
Just my random ADHD thoughts. XD
As information becomes available, I would love to read it. Will you post references as they trickle out? :)
Sure will!
I just discovered your channel but I'm already a fan, I'm 16 years old and I love history, greetings 💚
welcome!! this is a great community of people 😊
You couldn´t have found a better channel!
Good to see the next generation of history buffs! Stay curious, homie!
Super cool news! Another reason why archaeologic finds aren’t revealed until later is because unfortunately people might try to loot the items found. Looking forward to seeing how this new find will influence the reenactment swords being made!
Misty weather is always lovely! Beautiful background, and I love these archeological discovery videos, and swords are always cool! Also, that hilt is so cool looking, I always loved that triangle and bar style hilt construction, just looks very appealing
Love your shoutout to the finder. So nice to see people handling artifacts correctly. Also love how merrily you mention they used to hang people in this location.
That's the second good sword from Poland in recent years - another one (with "ulfberht" inlay, no less) was recently uncovered by pure chance while deepening the port canal in Włocławek, when one of the dredgers literally threw it out on a barge with a load of sand.
Impressive. That Ulfberth could easily be someone well known in his time. And when we say his name today he sort of still lives on.
SWARDS! MOAR SWARDS!
Great job with Polish words! I understand the strugle, both the river and the man's name are NOT easy to say for non-native speakers 😆
that was a seamless ad read, totally agree :)
Yes i can definitely see the sword smiths in the reenactment community making replicas of this new sword found. It’s definitely unique and an amazing historical piece of history.
If I find something really cool, it's best to leave it in situ unless it's likely to get damaged or lost again, correct?
Always, and babysit it if you can until authorities get there or at bare minimum, pay close attention to the exact location, dont leave any markers, and don't tell annnyone else until they can... keep it secret, keep it safe. 😉
@marcellacruser951 I would mark it on my map app. And only tell folks after it was in safe hands, of course. After that, I'd probably tell everyone I saw for the rest of my life
Correct. And if you have to move it, take photos of it in situ before you move it.
See why you worried it was a replica- that crossed strap detail over the pommel is almost too beautiful to be true. Polish Viking nerds are gonna be riding high on that sword for a while. Actually, basically all Viking nerds are gonna be loving that sword.
"tippy-tapping fencing". LOVE it.
Don’t have anything related to add but the algorithm likes comments,so…there was just enough packing snow where I live to make a teeny tiny snowman ⛄️ today!
A sword from the 9th slash 10th century Pun intended?
The cross straps are a good way to level up my really bad (and cheap) sword for my viking reenactment 🥳
The re-inaction at the end was amazing! Just like being there when it happened! 😂
To delve deeper on the issue whether this is a Viking sword, I recommend Dr. Leszek Gardeła’s recent book (came out last month but is very costly) called ‘Vikings in Poland’. In the book he actually analyses a lot of these ‘Viking’ excavations and finds in Poland. Majority of the time his conclusion is the same: these are Slavic objects, made locally. Just because a sword or objects looks typically ‘Viking’, doesn’t mean it is. Cultures back then were very similar, as well as the crafting methods. A sword of this kind was used from Ireland all the way to Constantinople and beyond. Most objects used by the Polish Piast dynasty during the Viking Age looked very Viking. But the consensus is that they were items crafted in Poland, with local resources, likely by the early Poles.
i agree to most of that. but not beyond Constantinople that was a stupid statement. Africa and the middle east did not use the Germanic type swords but most of western europe did.
@@fjalarhenriksson I think he had on mind Viking mercenaries in emperor's guard. The Byzantines doesn't use viking swords, but viking swords were used in Byzantium ;)
What you found in Eastern Europe is german or from Vikings or Celtic 😅, wheels from Bronze Age Gypssyys😂, Slavs come from oldest branche of Indo Europien peoples, and they don’t care, like Africans gold belongs to a Goldman
I have a leather belt that is at least 50 years old, it held my trousers up when I was in my teens, but it will not go around my waist any longer, I wonder why :)
Did it shrink?
Me: what a nice landscape
Jimmy: “they used to hang people right over there”
Me: 👁👄👁
Always exciting to see a new find for our period, like yourself I'll be keeping an eye out for leather wraps like this at Jorvik! And an aside I enjoy the phrygian cap look to your hat!
Chilblains, oh my! Jimmy, you're officially a character, you know. Loved this one.
Very nice Polish pronunciation!
The details about the leather handgrip were quite interesting. It's cool to know how this finding contributes to our understanding of the period.
Also, nice post-credits scene. 😉
"isnt that right friends?"
"..."
Lmao literally me
Just after he stabbing friends in the back!
best ad read I've heard in a minute 😅😅😅
Thank you so much for bringing this up! I'd never have known otherwise and it certainly is VERY cool!
4:24 lol Jimmy trying to explain pommel attachment without getting demonitized 🤣
Public reminder: Mikolaj Kopernik (Nicolas Copernicus), Maria Skłodowska-Curie and Fryderyk Szopen (Chopin) were all Polish 😇
Nicklaus Copernicus University is the most steampunk thing I have ever heard.
You Sir, Are Not Wrong.
It is located in Toruń - the home town of Copernicus (Kopernik).
haha 😆 I graduated it and it was kinda steampunk 😜
It reminds me the mindfuck when I discovered what means "ox" and "ford"...
One-off Viking finds are the reenactor equivalent of your fave artist dropping a new single
So cool! Also, mention of the recent bead find reminded me of your jewelry videos from a couple years ago. Any chance we'll get a bead video like those?
Pocket coffee!! Totally relate to this being a rougher time of year. As for cold pinkies; last year, I knitted myself fingerless mits on which there aren't seperated fingers, and the bit around the fingers is a little on the long side, so I can hide me pinkies in there! Perhaps you can add a little extension (in black? To match your Guild scarf?) to the pinkies on your gloves to protect them some more?
Yay! Poland!
"The Old Norse umbrella-culture..." what joy!
Funny thing about having A Time Of It, it's never a good time. I'd never say, "Ah, I had A Time Of It!" with a smile on my face and spring in your step. It's always something you grimace about and kick at the ground, full of rue. But It's Time is over, welcome back, nice to see you again. If I were to pick a letter for a sword, any letter? I'd go with þ (thorn).
Yes, the surviving wrapping is very exciting!
O yea!!! My birthday and jimmy drops a video!!! Woohoo, best present ever!!!
happy birthday!🎉😊
That's most definitely how things went down, cold hands, wet river.
Having Polish ancestry I'm very pleased with this.
4min 21sec someone walking in the background. Digitally add a scythe it's the Grim Reaper, add a red cross-hilted lightsaber It's Kylo Ren 😂
Another archaeology news episode - yay! That is definitely one cool looking sword ⚔️. Your enthusiasm for that leather on the hilt was infectious 😁
Thank you for letting us know about that great find ,look forward to know more about it
Merry Christmas/ Wesołych Świąt, Mr Jimmy!
Loved the clumsy Yorkshire Viking at the end (we all know that vikings can't vike without their coffee) 😄
I would not be a good person to find a viking sword; it would be too tempting to pull it out (and then claim to be queen of the Poles or wherever it happened). It's a beautiful sword though and the leather wrapping is a spectacular survival.
Imagine walking past the river at the exact same time the guy lifted the sword out of the water (if he did) that would be a memory to last a life time!
Boot up the Tardis! We’ll figure out how it was lost in no time. Maybe. If she actually lands where we tell her to. 🤔
It's a chonky boi!! What a neat thing to be found all the way over in Poland!
Oh you finally found that old sword? I completely forgot about it! Haven't seen it in a while...
Amazing! Hearing the first time of this sword, so well preserved.😮
I think you're spot on with it being type U. My favourite is the type L
That was so cool. Thanks Jimmy.
Glad I watched to the very end ... made my day :)
Wow! I can't believe it - Somebody actually used the word Illustrious correctly. My congregations sir - Oh by the way nice video too.
Your Polish pronunciation is pretty good! Supraśl is definitely not an easy word to say👍🤣
Could you make a video of how to properly report historical artifacts?
I understand that this is different from county to country, but a few universal do's and don't's would be great!
It happens very rarely, but every artifact we can safe through better information is another piece of history that won't be forgotten!
Two of my favourite things: swords and knowledge
What a great find! That leather is very lovely.
Difyr iawn! Diolch i ti. Ac os na welai di Nadolig Llawen!🗡🎄
WOOHOO SWORD TIME!!!
"What's a meter?" Nothing. What's a meter with you, Jimmy?
Growing up in Essex we visited Dick Turpins cave, on school trips, probably one of many caves tbf😂
Is there a video on what the process of reporting finds is? That would be fun
Does anyone know of a war or battle that occurred at that time in the area? Anything that would be the most obvious guess of how the sword got dropped?
The sword looks great. I would love to know more when the info comes out.
5:23 “just comment with a letter.
Me: þ
A+ Distinction
Nadolig Llawen I chi! I was just wondering how you were going.
You got me hooked on June's Journey I'm afraid to start another game😊
I do not have anything pertinent to the video to say, so : I want to try making saffron buns this week.
Jimmy: Good archaeology.
Archaeology: 🥰
So curious about the type of leather used is exactly. Also what type of conditioners if any were used on it in the past. It's so well preserved after all this time. I'm guessing the sword was fairly new or at least the handle was redone before it was lost.
Great video - thank you for sharing the news! 💞
Nice niche to find. I love history
Babe wake up, new Polish Viking sword just dropped 😊
Thank you for a lovely video
The leather is just deadly cool
At what point do we just call the Supraśl the "River of Blades":P
Two's a coincidence but three is a pattern.
I think if we go by that, we will end up with a whole lot of blade rivers all over Europe😅
I like that you mentioned when you first saw it you thought it was a reenactment sword. I didn't think that but I did think it looked an awful lot like The Windlass Battlecry Viking Maldon sword. Although when I looked the pommel and cross on the Battlecry are a lot different the overall dark color scheme & black "cracked marble" blade do mane the WBC have a similar look.
The pommel and cross on the sword find are very similar to the ones that were used on the Cold Steel/Balaur Arms single edged Viking sword (which that design now appears to be being sold by Fáfnir Forge but with a reddish leather grip/scabbard instead of the brown of the older iterations).
But still for display or possible reenactment (if one blunts the edge as Battlecry swords come sharpened) the Maldon could be a decent choice especially for modding the grip.
Beautiful sword
NEW SWORD NEW SWORD NEW SWORD!! And thus new video ❤
Good to see you
Also, how have I never heard of chilblains, but then I've heard/seen it twice today??
looks like it needs more than just a good polish
'Wot's a metre?' Ah, the Vikings were yanks!
Be well, Jimmy.
So, dumb question, but Skibicki was actively looking for potential finds, right? I assume you don't dive in a river like that unless you're seeing what you can find?
No the magnet fishing 😭
If I ever find so old thing in a river i will have no idea what to do, probably just call the living history museum ...
My 1st impression on the leather grip is that it looked like it was coated in pitch.
That’s most likely to be discolouration rather than the original look of the thing, but time will tell :)
@TheWelshViking I was thinking that maybe some random Viking was looking for a more secure grip. Thanx for responding.
what scandinavian people wear after the viking age ? in advanced medieval times they got themselves plate armor ? did they still used runes and knot works , decoration ? i try to find videos about this but everyone focused on the viking age .
I’ll be doing some later medieval Scandinavian videos next year, but I suggest searching for “High Medieval Scandinavia” elsewhere :)
@TheWelshViking thank you so much for the info
Wishing You A Merry Christmas & New Year AndSo Much Happiness For Next Year Jimmy! Hope You’re Doing Ok xo
Thank you, Mrs C! I’m doing my darnedest!
That's near my hometown. Noice!
Interesting but most of the screen was a massive black border. Have I done something wrong or did you actually shoot this in 879x472?
I thought I was the only one who got the video frame shrunk.
Dick Turpin! I only know about him from Good Omens and the silly car
