Mean girls? Oooof. It’s so much more elegant, layered, and complex. Thank you Rachel for your correction. This is NOT about just a rivalry, this is about social survival, a country at war, and how deep sorrow can unravel your entire life.
Just because Mean Girls was more mainstream and had a contemporary script and slapstick jokes doesn’t mean it wasn’t awesome. I think what she meant by relating it with Mean Girls was the desires, motivations, and emotions of the characters.
Angelo U I’m a writer, of course I understand all of that. The point is- why compare it to anything?! It’s sloppy journalism. There are hundreds of stories with similar log lines; person competes for the affection/favoritism of ring leader. This film deserves to use its own feet.
Well, as a journalist comparisons are drawn to make it easier for the public to understand an idea or concept easier. You were right that there are a lot of other stories out there which draw out the same emotions and reactions using female dynamics and relationships. The reporter probably used Mean Girls because she thinks the audience would immediately understand that she’s referring to the kind of relationships formed and ideas explored in the movie, things like competition, jealousy, self esteem etc. It’s not sloppy. You’re just being a film hipster or elitist, downplaying Tina Fey’s writing just because it’s mainstream.
Angelo U No, not “downplaying” Mean Girls, simply staying that IN MY OPINION it’s a silly, sloppy comparison. Go actually see the film and allow others to voice their own opinions. Agree to disagree, albeit I don’t revert to name calling. Be well!
@@harleyquiinnnn I am a dude and I can't blame you for also crushing on her. It's also interesting you say that cuz she also played a lesbian role in a movie called 'disobedience' a couple of years back which she was great in. Check it out if you haven't watched it yet.

I find it hilarious come to think, of it that a Greek director made a film about 3 women in power, while as a Greek woman all I have ever witnessed in my life here thus far at least, is that Greek men have as a sole purpose in their life to strip away any kind of power from women all together , while knowing full well that women outsmart them in every way and aspect of their life. If nothing else Lanthimos deserves an Oscar for not being like the Greek males I have lived my life with. Men I like to call the Greek Talibans. It may sound harsh but if you knew what women go through emotionally here in Greece, if they want to remain honest toward themselves and to toward men, you'd think otherwise, believe me. Huge congrats to Lanthimos for making Greece and Greeks and cinema lovers proud and I am still afraid to watch Dogtooth but I will...promise.
Greece isn't the only country filled with ideals such similiar to what you say. There are countless countries, religions that have similar values. There are many women in many society who go through far worse with the idea that it is okay to be treated like that, it their destiny to be treated like that.
h d I find Rachel able to mould into whatever role she plays like a chameleon & reach a certain depth of emotion & convincing portrayal. True abt Emma playing different variations of the same character- quite a number abt a young woman’s coming-of-age early struggles of gaining footing in whatever field/endeavour or teenager roles in the past.. Emma’s personality remains the same throughout most of the movies.. But her personality is very likeable & striking therefore she stands out for being that.. she makes every role she takes seem like cool, attractive because of that a-dork-able likeable & strong enduring quality. Rachel owns any role & she makes it emotionally accessible, vulnerable, very convincing of human frailty, endearing in a soulful way.. can’t really describe it..
Saw this film last month at the San Diego film festival month and Gayle is SO right-‘mean girls’ in court. LOL such a great film. Hope everyone sees it.
For some people, yes. But if you go in knowing the plot is basically two characters struggling for influence over the queen, and Rachel's character begins on top, you know it's unlikely she remains there.
I like how Weisz's character had a masculine looking suit while shooting guns did women commonly wear those too back then? Also how common/acceptable were gay people back in that time? Im just really curious Lol
No, the pants were added to help differentiate the character. There's an interview where the director says it. Also gay ppl probably wouldn't be very accepted. Even though it happened like crazy, especially in the high courts, it was kept under wraps
CBS This Morning got off on the wrong foot with that shallow comparison. The Favourite is rich and powerful and deep and beautiful, qualities that other film completely lacks, with 18th century England's governance at stake. Performances and costumes and sets and music that send this film into a rarefied atmosphere of cinematic art and true greatness.
I ... I can not look at Rachel weisz the same as when I first met her in the Mummy movie and sooo on ... Ever since the movie disobedience movie and also Rachel Mcadams of course . Both beautiful talented woman ..... But like ... my lord .
And then to quote the mean girls thing.. as if Rachel were the one to bring it up when it was just her trying to politely correct the interviewers dumb statement. Just shows how the media twists facts by quoting out of context.
Geez, this inept interview is why I don't watch network TV. Can't wait for Graham Norton to engage these incredible actors in real Q&A, they are both way more interesting than this!
This film is very well acted and directed. I don't enjoy seeing people being cruel to each other, so this movie was a turn off for me even though I watched it until the very end. Have a hard time seeing the humor in all the cruelty and abuse.
It all serves the purpose of critique. I found it a very current movie, in fact. It exposes sarcastically what the government is,and always has been, just an individual struggle for power. Just take a look at the politics around the world right now. Also, I loved the rawness of the movie. I thought it made for a very powerful storytelling. I'd love to hear some of your thoughts about it!
