  • Sarah Pengilly and her family have been living at the Bella Tess apartments in Spokane Valley for over a year. But at the beginning of August, Pengilly said she received a letter from the management company, Greystar, saying that it was time to renew her lease at a much higher price.
"If we were to renew between the first to the 15th of August, it was 1919, something I don't remember off the top of my head," Pengilly said. "And then if it was after that it was just going up. If we would have stayed a month to month, it would have gone up over $1000 extra a month."

I lived in those same apartments for several years! Our rent was 1250 for a 2 bedroom and they PURPOSELY tried to screw us over to force us to go month to month, which would have been OVER 2100. They're building more apartments across the street and they're pushing the inflated construction costs on the current residents.

It’s sickening seeing that there’s no actual shortage of building supplies but merely greedy bureaucratic’s at its morally lowest point in history, and the consumer is suffering while the rich get richer 🤷🏻‍♂️

Doing month to month is getting blood from a turnip, and this too is nationwide.

Did you know there are three times as many empty apartment units as there are homeless? Landlords are criminals against humanity.

We just had to leave a two bedroom apartment because the rent went from 1300 to 2200. With two adults working one owning a small painting business you would think we could afford this with two kids and a dog. But the everything else increasing as well creates a nerve wrecking circumstance.

I've read of renters bidding upwards, offering to pay more rent, just to get a roof over their heads.

There is a reason the French Revolution was so bloody. Landlords, the land holding class, are criminals against humanity. Housing is a human right. It is a birthright to have a space on this planet but this group of people stole the birthright of the rest of us.

This is going on in Idaho as well. It has been impossible for homeless to get in places to rent here also. All our apartments are full with 6-9 month waits at the least and prices have gone way up. Some places won't even take application until an availability opens and if you're not there ASAP, it is already filled.

It's just a matter of time before our rent goes up on Spokane's South Hill in the apartment complex where my husband and I live. It breaks my heart that so many families who work can't afford an apartment.

There was a time people lived in apartments to save for a house, and now they are living in the cheapest motels to save for an apartment.

I left California (after retiring) and moved to Spokane in May 2020. If I hadn't been able to buy a house, I could've been in the same boat as these people--only without the boat.
By comparison, I was renting a two-bedroom house in California for $1750 a month. I had been paying $1400, but when the landlord said he wanted to raise it to $2100 ("Based on comps in the area," he said), I was able to negotiate down to $1750 because I had been a good tenant. He's probably getting his $2100 now. Last year, I remember seeing two-bedroom apartments for less than $900 here in Spokane. Crazy. (Parenthetically, I bought my home for $175,000 and now it's worth approx. $237,000. I expect my property tax to increase accordingly.)

Renters need to form tenant unions! There is power in organizing. Landlords will be forced to make concessions when their ability to extract money is halted.

What are landlords going to do when people can't afford the rent? I'm a single mom and its so hard paying double now compared to what I was 6 years ago and its going even higher. I see so many moving trucks in my apt complex right now and I'm sure its due to rent hikes(they just resumed signing new leases...hmmm...)

Had planned to move back to Spokane, my home town, from the East Coast. But no more. My Mies van der Rohe high-rise condo's HOA fee is only $830 and that includes heating and air-conditioning. What is motivating the Spokane landlords? An influx of cash-rich Californians? God help people with low incomes.
