@@chadfolmar5900 I’ll get some flack, but Duolingo is a great resource when starting out, in order to get you interested in learning, and making time everyday to learn. On top of this I recommend listening to podcasts, and reading articles in Spanish, EVEN IF you don’t know the words. That’s not the point. Learning a language takes a lot of time. If you can dedicate 1-2 hours a day exposing yourself to comprehensible input, actively listening to what you’re hearing and reading, you will benefit greatly.

Andrew, I believe your method of instruction most useful for the casual spanish student.
If you start speaking you will make all kinds of mistakes but most Spanish speakers will help. GRAMMAR WILL FOLLOW SPEACH. I am 80 and just took up my hobby of learning a little Spanish.
VOWEL PRONUNCIATION MOST IMPORTANT. I know very little Spanish but correct pronunciation of vowels is MOST IMPORTANT.
    Thank for your short posts.

Brilliant. This is almost exactly the way I taught myself to learn languages. Typically I begin with a list of sounds with one word in the new language and an english word that both contain the sound and of course the meaning of the sound. With this list I get some vocabulary and the ability to pronounce what I read. What I lack is connectives, i.e how to put words together into sentences. Because I had learned french in school I keep mixing french into my spanish and have great trouble making spanish sentences. Your video has cleared up somethings for me. It is very helpful. I look forward to more.

It’ll help, but you’ll also soon find that Dominican Spanish can be very difficult to understand if you’re used to hearing only neutral Mexican/LatinAm or Castilian Spanish. Not only due to the accent, but also the way words are shortened, the differences in words used and their meanings, and the speed at which the words are said. It’s fun though. Good luck to you!

Hola Andrew! These are some very good basic Spanish words to know. Gracias!
Can you please tell me, though, why you have chosen to use the masculine form of "this; este" rather than the neutral form "esto" for these phrases? It is my understanding that when we are referring to objects and/or places in general, we should use the neutral "esto". Por ejemplo: "¿Qué es esto?" pointing to an unknown object, or "¿Donde está esto?" pointing to a place on a map which we are trying to locate. Gracias, de nuevo!

    • @realfastspanish
      @realfastspanish  5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

Hola Blake, here in these example sentences, "este" is better for places e.g. "este (lugar)", "este (sitio)", and for objects, "este (objeto)". Natives will assume the words in brackets from context if we simply say "este".

.... Ok. I know this may be very late comment to this video, however, if I may, I would liked to pitch in my two cents into the matter.
Especially in favor of those who might be watching the video for the first time.
    *Este*
Functions as an adjective or as a pronoun.
As an adjective, it will always be with a singular masculine noun: _Este libro_ es mi favorito. (This book is my favorite)
As a pronoun, it goes alone, without a name behind it.
In this case, it always refers to something that we have talked about before or,
in any case, we clearly know what or who we are talking about:
¿Qué libro te gusta más? (which book do you like most?)
Me gusta este. (hace referencia a libro) I like this one. (refers to book)
"Esta", "Estos" and "Estas" work the same but with feminine singular, masculine plural and feminine plural nouns, respectively.
Now, be very mindful of the the plural of "Este". It is not *Estes, but "Estos".
    *Esto*
This is always a pronoun, that is, it always goes alone. It doesn't have a name behind it.
Also, it's not masculine. It is used when we refer to something indefinite, such as a situation or many feminine and masculine things together:
¿Qué es todo esto? (What is all this?)
Esto (esta situación) es demasiado para mí. This (this situation) is too much for me.
No sé qué es esto, pero me gusta. (I don't know what this is, but I like it)
You can also use it when you don't know if something is masculine or feminine or if you simply don't know how to say it in Spanish.
You can point your finger at the thing you are talking about while saying:
¿Qué es esto? (What is this?)
¿Cómo se dice esto? (How do you say this?)
Quería un poco de esto, por favor. (I wanted a little bit of this, please)
    I hope this helps.
Thank you, for all you do.
