Yeah, a few years back I was dropped there by bus from Hamilton. Evening, dark. Drunks and yobbos everywhere. People sleeping on benches. Otherwise place deserted. I had to phone a friend to rescue me. Astonishingly, phone box not vandalised.
It's a scenic trip especially through the National Park in the central North Island but it's flippin long. 12 or 13 hours I think when you can fly from Auckland to Wellington in an hour for a similar price. Years ago sleeper trains use to run overnight.

I spent about a month on the South Island of NZ traveling by bus (Stray Tours) with friends but I really want to go back and travel by train someday! I’ve made a few videos like this and I know they take so long to edit and decide which clips to use. You did a good job!
I've had visiting New Zealand on my bucket list since Lord Of The Rings came out, the 'making off' stuff from that just made me want to go there, but I'm a wheelchair user and I get put off doing a lot of things due to worries about getting around, access etc, what's it like there for us on four wheels? I'm guessing it's better than the UK where I'm from, not many places aren't!!
I travelled few times in North Island and South Island NZ. I am registered nurse and I can tell you transport in terms of disability access it's very good. Public transport, public toilets, parks, shops and restaurants always have wheelchair access. In terms of hotel accommodations I think you need to inquire the hotel if they have bathroom accessible for wheelchair. The same in Australia too.

I did the Indian Pacific Sydney to Perth in 2019. It was an unforgettable experience in every way. Every entree Served was delish - I traveled in Gold class. The staff delivered top notch customer service. Wish the staff aboard Amtrak in the United States were as caring...

I’m from New Zealand, wheelchair access is pretty good, and people are always around to help you if you needed it

Amtrak is very behind in comparison to comfort of passenger trains in NZ and Australia.

We went on this train. Mid summer. 30+ degrees. Air con failed. An old run down train. Terrible. Rent a car... much better experience
