Thanks a lot April! When you do it methodically and have enough practice it really is not THAT hard although it may look very confusing/overwhelming at the beginning.
You are making me want to go snorkeling. You paint with ease and with some of the best instructions I have heard. You are awesome! Playing you all weekend!
Thank you :-) Yes...going skorkeling, freediving and scuba diving would be aweseome now :-) Hope the situation will get better...need to go back to egypt soon...or at least Greece ;-)
Actually we need to dive more ;-)))) I LOVE!!!! to dive...I did some freediving and started to scuba dive in 2018, I even have a drysuit to go diving in the "Bodensee" in wintertime, you should try it one day, it`s like flying :-))) But without the danger of crashing down ;-)))
This is incredible , it was wonderful to watch your techniques, I haven’t tried oils yet but I’m inspired to try after this , gorgeous work 😊 I look forward to watching more on your channel
Thank you so much :-) Yes, give the oils a try - it really is WAY easier than using acrylics, much more time to blend the colours. And the biggest advantage is - they stay true to their wet appearance, acrylics tend to change their colour when they dried. And a new video is coming every sunday ;-) Lots of different topics, pretty sure you will like some of the other videos, too :-)))
brennerfineart Thankyou so much 😊 i love that oils stay looking wet , it gives a painting so much more life ! I just watched your great white shark video as well , it’s magnificent ! I’m completely inspired , Thankyou so much
@@jennifernewmanart Thanks for watching :-) And thank you so much for your nice words - that encourages me to do the next underwater scene as quick as possible :-)))
Unfortunately I deleted the material for this video :-( So there will be no detail video from this one...but I will do some more underwater paintings in the future and they will be available as a full time real time video on my patreon site for sure :-)))
Hello Tobias, Hope you are well & being safe. My name is James, I am teaching myself oil painting. I stumbled on your tutorials and not only loving your work but learning a lot. I am grateful you are so giving of your knowledge. I have a question for you, after you lay in your underpainting do you let it completely dry before going ahead with the rest? If so how do you get your wet paint to blend with the dry.
Hi Jim, great to meet another teacher for the oils :-))) Now to your question - I let the underpainting dry completely, otherwise it would interfere with the new layer of colour. And we would also run into the problem, that in some places the layer of colour would become so thin that we could see the canvas. And that`s something I really don`t like when I do a realistic piece. I blend the fresh layer of colour by drybrushing it into the old/dry layer of colour. In my early days I tried to achieve the effect by putting in the colours wet in wet side by side. But today I drybrush on top adding just the new layer of colour wherever I need it. There are pieces (portraits e.g.) where I underpaint but still go over pretty much the whole piece again with a fresh layer wet in wet. It depends what technique I use, when I need a really soft transition on a face I go wet in wet on top of the old and dry layer. When I have a rock formation like this one here I dry brush the colour into the old layer that in most places "shines through".
Sorry but I don`t sub for sub. Furthermore I already follow too many channels to really engage in some new channels - and I`m sure you don`t really want a "dead subscriber".
hello Tobias, greetings from Costa Rica. Amazing job, you make it seems easy but all we know is NOT :) I have a question, is this piece oil or acrylic? and for sure I will suscribe to your classes.. love your creations !!!🤩👏👏👏👏
Thank you :-))) This is oil colour - I really like how easy you can paint with these compared to the acrylic colour that drys sooo quick and does not allow really nice transitions between the colours.
Hi Sanfoor, I already have a rose painting tutorial on my channel: th-cam.com/video/eSFgZd4vYp4/w-d-xo.html And I hope I will be able to do a glass painting tutorial in the near future. And thanks a lot for your feedback :-)
Enlighten to see this painting. I feel the joy of starting oil paint now. If I purchase student grade oil paint, will I get the same quality color as yours? Or do you use professional expensive oil paint? Thks in advance.
Hi Bill, great that this painting inspires you to start using oils :-))) The last time I used really "cheap" oil paint is decades ago...so I`m not sure what the quality of todays student grade oil paint is. I would recommend that you don`t spend too much on your first set of oil colours - perhaps you don`t like to paint with oils. But if you like it you can step up the game later and switch to a better colour. Btw - I use Winsor&Newton water mixable oils - they are not extremely expensive, a 200 ml tube is around 20 dollars. So you don`t need "High-End" colour to get decent results :-)))
Life saver just starting same Theme n wondering how to do the background 😭🙉🙈n here u are with the solution dry brush fantastic thanks. Hope it's going to works jysr as beautiful with acrylics. 🥤🧁🤙
With enough patience it should work :-)))) but it really is more difficult as the acrylics are nearly dry the moment you put them on, so no time for blending unfortunately.
Did you seal the graphite drawing with fixative spray so it wouldn't mix with the oil paint in the underpainting? And how long did the oil underpainting take to dry? Also, what are the pros and cons of making an underpainting with oils instead of acrylics?
I actually use a hard pencil for the presketch on the canvas or the mdf plates - so there is basically no need for a fixative spray. The oils took around two days to dry, I use water mixable oils and in the stage of the underpainting this helps a lot to get the colours dried in a reasonable time when you thin them down with water. Acrylics dry SO quick, especially on a canvas that has not been pre-sealed, that there is basically no chance of getting the colours blended for the underpainting. And here I just wanted to have at least the possibility to "pull the colours around" a little bit. Therefore I used the oils...and most important - I had no deadline to finish the painting ;-) That is one of the most critical aspects when it comes to determining what kind of colour you would use. If there would have been a tight deadline I would definitely have used acrylics.
Great Painting, tho you made a Big Mistake for the Schooled Eye. I did lots of Turtles. And their "Scales" are very Geometrical, Hexagonal Based. You started and then simply connected them as you went. I did the same mistake on my First. It looks more real if you follow their Pattern.
Thank you :-)))) Yes...this actually is the very first turtle that I painted...there for sure are imperfections all over the place ;-))) Thanks for letting us know! I will think about your tip when I paint another turtle :-)))
Hi, My kid is 13 years old and is good with Oil Pastels. He has watched most of your video tutorials. He has made this painting by viewing your video tutorial. I would like to send you his painting. Please advise. Thanks
That`s great :-))) Just make a youtube channel and load up a short clip of the painting he did. And then send me here on this conversation the link. It´s the easiest and safest way.
Due to popular demand - links to the colours/mediums I use for my paintings are now in the description box.
