October 13 - The beginning of the end for Edward Seymour

  • This day in Tudor history, 13th October 1549, was the beginning of the end for Edward Seymour, Duke of Somerset and Edward VI's uncle, for it was on this day that the king's council abolished both his protectorate and his membership of the Council.
    Somerset had been left vulnerable by social unrest in the kingdom and when things got tense between him and John Dudley, Earl of Warwick, and his supporters, Somerset took action, action that would see him being branded a traitor.
    In today's talk, Claire Ridgway, author of "On This Day in Tudor History", explains exactly what Protector Somerset did to provoke his downfall and what happened next.
    Edward Seymour ended up being executed on 22nd January 1552 and you can find out more about his execution in Claire's talk from 22 January - • January 22 - Execution...

    Two cat cameos, bells tolled and a stunning account of the rise, fall and execution of Summerset. A man with unlimited ambition who fell once and was restored to prominence only to fall again. Interesting people these Tudors.

    My 12th great-grandfather Sir William Lock (or Lok/Locke) had been a gentleman usher to Henry VIII and knighted by Edward VI as well as an alderman and sheriff of London and was one of the men sent to arrest Edward Seymour. Family legend says that William's grandson Matthew Locke of Pensford later married Edward Seymour's daughter Catherine, although no proof has been found to confirm this.

    I can't believe that after being in the tower and being so close to having his head taken off of his shoulders that he could ever try to be ambitious again. The only reason I could see that he would do that would be if he really and truly felt like maybe Northumberland and company were actually the one's being disloyal or ambitious, and maybe King Edward just had blinders on and was young and naive, after all the Seymour's were his own blood. I would have hoped they had his best interest at heart, but then again ambition is an evil green monster that makes people do weird and strange things. So maybe he did wish to be restored to his former glory, or maybe he even wished for himself to be made king and overthrow his young nephew. I just kind of find it unlikely that with the way things were back then, and knowing how easily Lady Jane Grey way overthrow, that the people were still indeed loyal to their beloved king Henry viii. But being maybe that he didn't have the hindsight that we now have maybe he really did think he could get away with stealing the crown. After all, it had been done before, but I still like to hope he had his nephew's best interests at heart!!

      LOL! I agree, they seemed to have been exceeding ambitious. I am sure they were the ones that thrust their sister Jane under the Kings nose when they knew he and Anne Boleyn were having problems. And they were my great-Uncles (x14)! Their brother Henry Seymour was my great-grandfather (x14), the only brother who kept his head. I am a descendent of Henry’s daughter Jane Seymour Rodney. When you read about Henry Seymour, everyone makes him out to be some complete and total loser, even though he held lots of important local offices. He seemed to have a character much more like his sister Jane and so very different than his two brothers. I wonder how he really felt about them? Well, I am glad he was a mild, non-ambitious person, or I doubt I would be here now!

    • @anneboleynfiles
      @anneboleynfiles  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Clare Cherry and I started work on a biography of the brothers but then we both got too busy doing other projects and Clare commented that she didn't mind letting go of the project as it was hard to find any redeeming qualities in these men. You don't have to like who you're writing about, but it does make a project easier and more enjoyable, I think, if you do.

      They never learned, especially Somerset who was given a second chance (because the charges were dodgy?) and still could not behave. And Dudley's turn to be executed was not far away.
      Perhaps men of overweening ambition like these go some way to explain Henry:s suspicious nature. The court must have been hoaching with plots and feuds.

    Hi Claire! Good video -- You've done so much for us with all the videos about Tudor England, and I want to try and do something for you. I don't know if you're aware of this, but back in the 70's, Rick Wakeman, the keyboard player of the rock group Yes, released a solo album entitled The Six Wives of Henry VIII. These pieces of music are Wakeman's interpretation of the six queens. Here is the link to the TH-cam video: th-cam.com/video/aDuBhDzjYyI/w-d-xo.html. If you'd like to see Wakeman in concert, skip to the last video which is the music for Catherine Parr. When it comes to music, Wakeman is on a level all his own. There are really good keyboard players out there, like Tuomas Holopainen of Nightwish, and then there's Wakeman. I hope you enjoy it! Have a great upcoming week!
