My theory is that there are hundrends of Avatars of Vishnu and Shiva, Concept of Dashavatar is a relatively new concept (few thousand year old, but not as old as vedas) created to make people understand the evolution of Man's Emotion and mind through yugas and ages.
Kalki purana is a very new purana written during mughal invasions... i wont take any purana seriously its our Folk tales, philosophical stories for common people to understand ethics and morality they are not ithasa, Valmiki Ramayana and Mahabharata are itihasa aka history told poetically, none has his mention... Mahabharat uses the word kalki but its in different context. Note: other ramayanas are not itihasa only Valmiki one is.
You must understand we were being invaded by barbarians we needed a hope, so people in those time might have found solace with popularizing of Kalki calling him as the avatar who will get rid of these Muslims.
