I returned to Super Mario Bros. any% speedruns for a bit to raise money for charity. We managed to hit a milestone of $1000, so I did this challenge, and it was a CHALLENGE! But also very fun and funny! In the end we raised $1500 for National Children's Alliance!

It is strangely satisfying seeing a world-class speedrunner struggling with the 8-1 and 8-3 stairs as badly as I do on a standard playthrough

I’m on mobile, and towards the end of the video I wanted to do the double-tap ten second rewind. It took me several seconds to think about whether I should tap the left or right side of the screen. Suddenly I understood why this was so difficult for Kosmic.
Just one small change to something we all recognize throws the brain into a tizzy

Jeez, if this took Kosmic an hour and twenty minutes, it’s safe to say it would take me the rest of my life to beat this.
I legit clapped when you got the final axe.
Did you know that flipping along both the horizontal and vertical axes is identical to rotating 180 degrees? If you want to follow along, just rotate your display/phone!
There's a similar situation in some Geometry Dash levels. One level, called Congregation, has a few sections in the drop that entirely repeat themselves, but the second repetition is upside down. Lemme tell you, even in a game where you're used to playing upside down, you still have to completely relearn it for each orientation. I know how crazy it must be to have to manage that, as well as horizontal movement (which is also reversed), in a game which doesn't normally even have upside down gameplay

When I was a kid, no one in the family knew about the a + start trick. As a result, beating this game was... almost impossible.
This is probably as confusing as seeing a new speedrun for the first time.

Kosmic is one of the biggest brain SMB1 gamers, but there is something hilarious whenever his big brain cannot handle this challenge. Getting power up or 1-up and then falling into a 1-tile wide pit is great. Kosmic brain cannot compute
Proof that Speedruns aren't just Muscle Memory.
Freak man. Two things: 1) Upside down and backward and you still play better than I do normally. 2) Watching 16 minutes of this made everything on my other screens feel like they were upside down and backward too. LOL
Kosmic doing something even remotely similar to the bullet bill glitch while playing like this was actually really impressive.
Two things:
1) Kosmic's reactions are hilarious if you watch this video upside-down but pretend that you don't know he's *playing* upside-down.
2) Is there anyone else here who's seen the anime film Patema Inverted? I couldn't help but remember it while watching. 😆

Super entertaining challenge. Glad you eventually got beyond all the pit falls, unusual enemy patterns and awkward maneuvers. This was really fun to watch compared to seeing you complete smb with the "power glove" which was torturous. Much appreciation for all your determination and top class gaming.

Wow, I had to double check when you said A+Start wasn't in the game manual and you're right. I thought for sure it was in there because everybody in my family knew to use A+Start to continue, and we never bought the Nintendo Power magazines back in the day.

I've been taking some karate classes for a while. (I'm still beginner-level) And one of the things we do is to learn a set of moves called a Kata and there is something called the Ura of a particular Kata, where you do the mirror version of it (so you move right everytime you would move left and vice-versa. Luckily forward and backward remain the same as in the original kata). That melted my brain when I tried it the first few times xD I suspect this feels similar, but even worse, because you're not only going backwards, but also upside down xD

3:17 Good thing they made the continue feature into a button on the Game Over screen for SMB2J, although that was probably done because of the decision to how you'd access a letter world run instead of a number world run being holding A then pressing Start on the title screen for the original FDS version, not out of generosity.
Edit: Here is the death counter for each level in World 8 (Each death shown in the video that is.):
8-1: 11
8-2: 09
8-3: 09 (Took 7 deaths before 1st completion)
8-4: 05 (Took 5 deaths before 1st completion)
If anything, this proves 8-3 is harder than 8-4 in SMB1, thus meaning 8-3 is the hardest level in SMB1.
You almost took as long playing through the game this way as I did playing it regularly to test my new flash cart out, with save states.
Though I can at least try and feel better about my skill level by saying I've played through all levels without using any warps!
Your skill level is definitely still showing, though if you want to do that with other games maybe rotate your CRT and have something like a 3D printed harness or a few wooden supports so it doesn't tip over? That way you don't get the stream input lag throwing you off in addition to everything else going on.
Or just a cheap CRT you don't mind if it gets dented from being upside down.

Kosmic plays smb upside down and backwards as good as I do the regular way.
I thought, how hard can it be, it's just normal Mario as if you're sitting upside down. It was ridiculously funny!
And now I've seen you play just like I do, except maybe for the power up jumps and bullet bill gltich, but yeah, the mishaps.
And every time you did the one block stair case super slowly I was just waiting for your brain to recalibrate and do things backwards :p I'm quite impressed you didn't die there at all :D
Re-experiencing this game upside down, it reminded me it's is actually quite charming.

this is the smb1 experience for non-speedrunners. you may know all the tricks, but that won’t stop you from resetting in world 8 for 2 hours straight, trying to beat it

All his comments like "my brain is not powerful enough": that is one of the most quintessential IQ tests, you get someone to progressively memorize longer and longer patterns of numbers and repeat them back, but you also get them to do so in *_reverse_* order. And yeah, it immediately becomes so friggin' difficult.
Speaking of which, Kosmic doing this was like most people playing the game normally. Imagine being that _bad_ again. :D

I used to do this now and then as a kid! Well, not speedrunning... just playing it upside down. I thought it was hilarious!
I was playing on GBC, so the controls were upside down as well, which must be a different experience.
Edit: I feel like it must be the display lag that messed you up, though. It's hard to imagine playing it upside down to be so hard to adjust to.

After i played entrance randomizers a lot, i get off the PC, and feel like IRL i need to figure out which door is the bathroom one, and with Portal 2 runs, i wanna use portals to get to the bathroom.
This version of the game would make me wanna P while standing on the bathroom's ceiling.
would be cool to take it a step further like: every death and level it rotates the screen clockwise or counter-clockwise ans also changes the A and B button and rotates the controlls of the d-pad clockwise or counter clockwise

Only now I realized that in theory one only needs to defeat one enemy in SMB. Wonder if there is an exploit to avoid spawning the final Bowser for a full pacifist run.
