Great storytelling. Showing the very best of an historian-storyteller to take the time and make the effort to visit Lucy Mercer Rutherford's daughter to observe her reaction to her mother's letter. This is why he's one of the best in the business. Just from that observation a little more is known of Lucy-that her daughter loved her. That's great historical research.

I am not American... but from an allied country... Jon Meacham is my favourite... he is calm, measured, extremely knowledgeable and thoughtful.. even if perhaps a little too optimistic... however, after watching with absolute horror what has unfolded in the US since 2016 and especially the interviews of "the man in the street" and especially the man in the street supporting trump... it seems to me that Meacham is correct... the problem with the acceptance of trump and his fascist diatribe is significantly the result of a failure of the education system in the US...

Jon Meacham is a soporific narcissist. What exactly did Trump do that is fascist? Feel free to cite evidence other than he sounds like a NY cab driver. By the way, who do you believe is responsible for the total collapse of public education in America (which you are correct about)? You are entitled to apply the label "distasteful" (that is a simple matter of personal taste). Fascist requires a modicum of evidence. The PM of Canada is much closer to being fascist for all of his suppression of speech. You are probably from an allied country that refuses to pay its share of NATO expenses.

self righteous tripe I would say.

You'd swear that had he not become an historian, Jon Meacham would have been a preacher. And a good one. So much of his philosophy is rooted in religion. Humans as fallen creatures. The notion of sin. The focus on redemption. But that's what mainstream historians have become: moral philosophers. They're filling a void in an age when higher education institutions have become trade schools, and prominent leaders of the highest profile companies demonstrate a near total incapacity for moral reasoning. Great discussion here!

    I admire Jon.
    History is important.
    This man’s opinion is important.
As American as baseball and apple pie and democracy.
    A good man.

Meacham is charming but he does tell the same eight or ten jokes in EVERY interview he does. Every one! Those of us who love history and watch all his interviews have all heard all these stories and the same handful of jokes seventeen times. It's time for some new material. Hire Billy Crystal. Enough's enough. Not enough from Bechloss, but otherwise a fun interview, as always.

Too bad to make such a cutting, diminishing remark about Jon Meacham! I try to keep up on all his interviews, and while jokes and unrelated stories are not my top priority, I don’t recall the redundancy mentioned. On the contrary, I am always amazed at the huge volume of material in the man’s brain and at his fingertips! I especially enjoy his Episcopalian jokes and stories, but, again, I don’t recall hearing the same one twice.
