    Great video Vlad. I absolutely love the sheer convenience of my Baader Hyperion Zoom. Like you i have been trying moving into the wide field EP’s but I just seem to prefer the 60-68 degree eyepieces. I can see the entire FOV in one look without having to move my eye around the field stop to take it all in. Best EP I’ve ever bought

    Well this was very helpful. Im a beginner...really bought the telescope for my kids and got hooked on it. usual mistakes of going cheap in telescope and eyepieces.....sitting here wondering why this 100 bucks upgrade set I got has a 6mm eyepiece that feels like looking through a straw......... this video answers the question of eyepieces directly but hints on telescopes...please do the same for telescopes...save other people the $600 I didnt.

    Really great video mate, I must admit I have been in astronomy for quite sometime and it's nice to hear someone that can clear some of the confusion. I have the Celestron 24-8 and believe me when I say it's the only ep that sit in my diagonal 😉 I just love the fact that I can adapt my mag to the constantly changing seeing condition for optimum result in a twist.

      Yes the utility of a zoom is very nice! I did not mention in the video but the Baader zoom is significantly better Then the entry level zooms optically. Just wanted to clarify that but yes I'm sure that even the Celestron unit does give you a nice view with all the utility I talked about of a zoom!

    You deserve huge props for replying to every single comment, few TH-camrs do that. I havent read every one, maybe its been asked, but is the zoom "locked" at those 5 focal points? In other words, If I wanted to view at 10mm can I set it in between the 8 and 12? I.e., is it "infinitely adjustable" throughout the entire zoom range? Thank you.

    Thanks a lot! We just received our 8SE and we're planning on appropriate EP for planetary observation. After looking extensively into Tele-vue, ES, Pentax, we ran into the BPH MarkIV zoom+barlow solution. Eureka, that was it for us. Although not unlimited, our budget will be invested into an eyepiece that will provide us the best all-around experience along with our new telescope which offers such potential when combined with the right optics. This year we're prioritizing on Jupiter, Saturn and Mars since they are presently in opposition and provide such details and brightness. And we will also be enjoying the rich details of the Moon. Later in the year we'll be looking at deep sky objects like Orion, Andromeda, Trifid, etc. We think that the zoom solution is the best for us since we don't have to remove ep, place ep, retarget, refocus, and is more convenient when our kids are participating. Your vid gave us more confidence into the Baader 8-24 zoom.

    I hope you'll excuse me, I wrote all this before I noticed this was about first eyepieces and not First Scopes, so I thought I'd ask here. I purchased a used Meade ETX125 and I was just curious if you have any videos on fixing the focuser (or removing the back)...when I rotate the focuser counterclockwise, it doesn't stop even when it is 2 inches away from the rear part of the scope. I have seen pictures of the rear plate off, but I'm afraid if I remove it, like a watch, parts may fly everywhere. My assumption is, if there is a stop on the helix of the focuser it may have come lose. I did look through it before I bought it but the cost came down even though it did focus but the travel back was too far. I know the ETX125 is a very precise scope, but from the picture of it with the back plate off, the mirror remained where it was supposed to be. Anyway, Mirror cleaning is what I first watched, good video. I like descent scopes that people have given to thrift stores and i rescue them before any kids knock them over. Pardons, If you don't mess with mechanical parts, what you have is fine, Telescopes are engineering marvels that go back 500 years or so.

X ) I'm basically a newb though I've enjoyed planetary viewing since I was a kid. I've got an Astromaster 130eq, researching upgrading the lens and after watching your vid I found a Baader Hyperion Zoom 8-24 Mark III with a Barlow. Do you think this is overkill for the scope? Any advantage to the Mark IV? No one has it in stock right now either.. I'll put together an SCT at some point, so I figure invest in a decent eyepiece in the meantime.. Great vids, Subscribed, Happy Holidays!

    • @AVTAstro
      @AVTAstro  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey Mark, so with your Astromaster 130eq you will have a magnification range of about 27x-81x. This covers ou very nicely for the low power range. I would in fact get the Baader Zoom and a 2x barlow so that you are then covered from 27x-162x! In general like I talk about in the video this is one eyepiece you will keep on using with most any scope you might get in the future.
      As far as the Mark 3 vs 4, I have owned both. Optically I could not tell any difference. The main difference is that the Mark 3 zoom mechanism can get quite stiff when used in cold weather. The Mark 4 resolves this.

    I am in NO WAY an advanced user. but I have used my hobby for girl scout / boy scout camps, elementry school outings. I use a simple LX90. the thing is, a new observer expects to see through a scope what they see in magizines... we here know that is not the case BUT, In my meager travels I have noticed that a wider field of view really helps when a novice viewer has to employ some imagination. although the price difference is REALLY HUGE and hard to do.

      @AVTAstro  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well the Baader Zoom will give you a magnifications range will be form 50-150x witch is very good for most any kind of observing besides high power planetary/Moon. Since the dob is probably manual a wider FOV eyepiece might be a better idea that gives you around 120-130x. The Explore Scientific 8.8mm 82* would be a good choice for a non-zoom alternative. Vlad.

      @@AVTAstro Thanks! I've been looking into the 82 degree ES series. I would still like to purchase a few eyepieces that give me a similar range offered by the Baader Zoom. I was thinking a 24mm, 14mm, and 8.8mm from the ES 82 degreee with a 2x barlow would give me a decent range of 50-272x. From what I've read, its unlikely to achieve greater than 250x due to atmospheric conditions and the capabilities of these telescopes, so this would give me something to play with on those super calm nights. • @AVTAstro
      @AVTAstro  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi, there is nothing "better" about a 2" eyepiece. What it does is allows the eyepiece designer to need a wider total field of view out of an eyepiece. The Baader zoom is not wide enough to need this. Its usually eyepieces that are above 24mm that need to be 2".

I am a newbie, and have a Celestron AstroFi Mak 127mm and am wanting to upgrade the EPs. (I'm also thinking about upgrading the star diagonal). I'm torn between buying the Zoom you recommend or going for 2 ES's with a barlow. I think the Zoom would be great at the higher magnifications, but what I am thinking about is the lower power (24x). I love the idea of having a wide view and "looking through the spaceship window". Do you think the Zoom still gives a comfortable viewing field? I am considering buying a 2" star diagonal and then lower magnification ES with wide view for nebulas... Do you think that might be a good approach? Very much appreciate your time if you are able to reply. Cheers

      The 127mm Mak that you have is a fine instrument! With the Zoom you will have between 55-165x witch very nicely covers you for about any kind of viewing with that aperture scope. Would I prefer a wider eyepiece in the low power range? Yes! what I would honestly do is buy the zoom now and then buy a 68* FOV eyepiece in the 30-40mm range in the future for that wide FOV experience.

      Upgrading the diagonal in general is a good idea and I would go with a 2". Most of them are fairly good if you get a dielectric coated one. ES makes a good one, I have had several.

    I owned a baader zoom a didn't find contrast that great for DSO. I was using it in nexstar 8SE. I was using with some light pollution, but I found my ES68 24mm much better. Did you have same experience or comment? I sold it but now I regret it because of convenience for planets. Have you compared meade, celestron or vixen to the baader? I had a meade too and found sharpness and contrast similar to baader but obviously smaller FOV. Maybe you have some thoughts on that too? Thanks for thorough explanation. I think with your vast experience your channel will catch on. Maybe as a suggestion make a bullet point list of what points you want to make during your video to avoiding stalling. Hi, yes I actually do own an Explore Scientific 24mm 68*! If you are comparing the eyepieces you need to do it side by side on the same night. The WOW factor will certainly go to the ES24mm since its a much wider FOV compared to the Baader zoom @24mm. Again, I have compared the zoom to the best sharpest eyepieces and it is at least 90% as good in regards to sharpness and contrast. Hope this helps, Vlad.

    Hi, Vlad! I like your reviews very much. I didn't know the Baader eyepieces and I'm thinking of buying a 6 mm classic ortho for planetary observing with my 1400 mm focal length Maksutov-Cassegrain telescope (100 mm aperture). My main objective is to see the Cassini division in the Rings of Saturn, and also the Great Red Spot in Jupiter. I read your review on that and I am a little bit concerned with the eye relief, but since I will not use it for more than one hour, I think it won't be a problem. What do you think?

    • @AVTAstro
      @AVTAstro  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, with the 6mm you will be at about 233x. That's a fairly high power especially for a 4" scope. The image will be fairly dim and you will only be able to use it a few times a year if your seeing is anything like mine. I would honestly recommend the 10mm BCO instead. That will give you 140x witch can be used on most nights and will easily show you the Cassini Division. Vlad.

      Hey congrats on the 8SE! Its an awesome scope to start out with and I would have done just about anything to have it been my first scope back when I got into the hobby(I started with a 60mm Tasco Achromat)! If you are sticking with the 1.25" form factor I honestly would really just get the zoom and see if you feel like you really need a wider eyepiece. Issue is that with the 1.25" eyepiece you are maximized at 24mm 68*. While that is wider than the zoom at 24mm and 50* its not earth shatteringly wider. You really need to get a 2" eyepiece, 2" visual back and 2" diagonal to get a significantly wider FOV.

    Have you ever tried one of these zooms in a Short Tube 80 clone? My son is awaiting the newly re-issued Orion version as his first scope. The 48* AFOV at 24 mm seems to defeat the purpose of that type of scope. I'm also concerned about relative weight on such a compact OTA, especially with the Barlow, since he'll be starting with a light alt-az mount or a fluid head video tripod. Lastly, how do you think the edges of the FOV will look in an inexpensive F5 refractor? I don't want to get him a better eyepiece that will emphasize any imperfections in the optics. Thanks in advance, there was lots of good insight in this video.

    • @AVTAstro
      @AVTAstro  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have not tried it in a ST80. I have recently had a ST150 and it performed well with the zoom. In all honesty I did not evaluate the edge performance specifically. If you are going to put the scope on a lighter tripod balance bay be an issue with the zoom. You will really want to stick with simple plossl to 60* eyepiece designs to keep the weight down.
      But you are right in general, for me the strength of the short tube scopes is in their wide field views and I would personally not use one over 100x(too much secondary color, if interested check out my review here: avt-astro.com/reviews/telescopes/celestron-omni-xlt-150-f-5-refractor-review/). Im tempted to get the zoom, but apart from the ease of use with the zoom, is there another reason. • @AVTAstro
      @AVTAstro  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good question. So I will start off by saying that there probably is not a modern eyepieces no matter how bad that will be 30% worst performing to the very best modern eyepiece no mater how good. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise...
      Now to address your question directly. The Celestron eyepiece set that you have are certainly on the entry level. They will have a field of view that is probably 45-50* witch is narrow and will not use the best glass/coatings. Will the Baader zoom be better? Yes, it will show you a better more contrasty view on everything from planets to DSO's. How much better? I would say 5-10%. That might not sound like much but again there is no magic equipment that you can buy that will give you a 50% sharper/more contrasty view. Unfortunately it does not exists. This is true for most hobbies in that you pay disproportionately more to get the last 10% of performance.
      Also I will point out that the convenience factor of the zoom might not sound like such a huge deal for you. Believe me it is. You are able to see more detail on objects by fine-tuning the magnification to exactly what the seeing/object will support on that night. You also do get a nice wide field of view in that 12-8mm range with the zoom. So its like buying a sharper set of ortho eyepieces in the 24-13mm range plus a set of wide-angle eyepiece in the 12-8mm range. Its an awesome eyepiece!

      @@AVTAstro Im loving this, its like my own personal consultant, thank you so much. However feel free to ignore me when I start asking more and more things, I won't be offended ;D. I agree with your statement regarding the 10% on hobbies, Ive played guitars for years and the standard even on the most cheap entry levels these days has got decent enough that its really just the luxuries you are paying for, similar. to cars and most technology etc.
      I also agree with the convienence factor, I didnt meant to down play it its a huge factor. Even in my own back garden with all kit at hand its annoying fiddling about trying to find the right ep even with just five of them, gettng the right one without turning on lights ect, guessing at what would work best swopping back and forth, all while trying to keep your eyes adjusted. I appreciate learning the limitations of each ep is part of the journey and all comes with experience but the overall ease and comfort of not having to constantly stop, change/fiddle about is certainly attractive, especially where I ive in the Uk when the clouds are somewhat erratic, at the end of the day all you want to do is sit back in a comfy a chair and see whats out there thats the fun factor (well for me). Currently I spend half my time looking down at my kit and not up at the skies.
      I think im probaby going for the zoom, ive done a fair bit of reading up, for both the pro and cons and I think the for novice astonomer like me its probably perfect for now, I know zooms of the past have got a sketchy rep with some people, but with the convienece it does seem a bit of a game changer.
      In regards to an additional eyepeice for a wide view , I can get by with the entry level 32 ep 1.25 for now, but will swop out to a 2" for a better FoV at some point. Any recomendations thats mid price, (anything from £150/$150-300ish.) thats considered a reliable workhorse. Just for general viewing, nothing specialised and just for viewing. Mostly just to cover clusters and the larger DSO's. I think my goal kit wise is to have a modest little set up, it doesnt need to be the best, not to mention my wife would kill me if she started adding up the reciept :D Thanks again.

But now that I know there are much more things out there I can observe such as many emission nebulas, which usually come with angular size two or three times bigger than that of our moon, than I realize the size of the field stop, the apparent field of view and the exit pupil of an eyepiece are more important compare to other specifications. It all depends on what you want to observe, and what your telescope are design for, there is no one eyepiece able to accomplish everything at once, most likely people will end up collecting more than two eyepiece.

      Lol, like I said at the start of the video this is not going to be a quick 5min optimized TH-cam subscriber wormhole so sorry about the leanght. This is made for someone interested in getting some in-depth info on eyepieces from someone that has owned and used them all. Vlad.

      AVT-Astro , the content is fine. I’m just saying you have no expression... very dry. A little humor, expression or anything else you can muster up would give your audience a connection to relate with. Even the most dire circumstances can use a bit of humor. Covid19 is taking its toll. So wash your hands, and other private parts, extensively. You see? I like what you do...but

    At $ 850.00, this is NOT a beginner eyepiece. Maybe if you are a Bill gates or Jeff Bezos. That's about 3x the price of an average beginners good telescope. Get real.
